    BRITNEY SPEARS - EVERYTIME (2004) hit #15
Everytime" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears from her fourth album, In the Zone. It was released on May 17, 2004, by Jive Records as the third single from the album. The song was written by Spears in 2002 after her break-up. After Spears ended her relationship with pop singer Justin Timberlake, she made friends with her backing vocalist Annet Artani. They both started writing songs together at Spears's house in Los Angeles, and then traveled to Lombardy, Italy, where "Everytime" was written. Spears composed the music on her piano, and she developed the lyrics with Artani. The song was written as a response to Timberlake's 2002 single "Cry Me a River" as well as various radio interviews, according to Artani. However, Spears has neither confirmed nor denied these allegations.

"Everytime" is considered a pop ballad with breathy vocals. Its lyrics are a plea for forgiveness for inadvertently hurting a former lover. "Everytime" was positively received by critics, who complimented its simple lyrics and the organic feel of the song in comparison with most of the tracks of In the Zone.Spears maturity in the production and her writing have been complimented. The song has been named one of Spears best ballads."Everytime" was a big success, peaking inside the top five in most countries, while reaching the top of the charts in Australia, Hungary, Ireland and the United Kingdom. In the U.S. it was a top twenty hit, peaking at number fifteen on Billboard Hot 100. Spears performed "Everytime" in a series of live appearances such as television shows Saturday Night Live and Top of the Pops. As June 2011,the song has sold 5 million copies worldwide and 500,000 in the U.S,making it being certified gold.

On May 22, 2004, "Everytime" debuted at number sixty-one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming the "Highest Debut" of the week. On July 3, 2004, it peaked at number fifteen and stayed in the position for four weeks. The song also peaked at number four on Billboard's Pop Songs and at number seventeen and number twenty-five on the Hot Dance Club Songs and Adult Pop Songs charts, respectively. On November 18, 2004, "Everytime" was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) selling 500,000 copies. As of July 2010, "Everytime" has sold 469,000 paid digital downloads in the United States. The song also peaked at number two in the Canadian Singles Chart

    KELLY CLARKSON - BREAKAWAY (2004) hit #2
Breakaway" is a 2004 song written by Avril Lavigne, Bridget Benenate and Matthew Gerrard and produced by John Shanks. It was recorded by pop rock singer Kelly Clarkson for the soundtrack to the film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement by Walt Disney Records, where it quickly became a charting single and video from the soundtrack. Later, it was included on Clarkson's second album, Breakaway, being released again by RCA Records as the album's first single. It was the first single in North America, Latin America and Australia, and the fifth single in Europe from Clarkson's second album.  In February 2005, the single was certified gold by RIAA and has sold over 1,733,000 copies in all formats in the US     The situation changed in August 2004, when "Breakaway" entered the Billboard Hot 100 and slowly began to climb it. It gradually became one of the biggest hits of late 2004, peaking at number six on the Hot 100 in November, becoming Clarkson's first top ten single since "Miss Independent" in 2003. Because of the slow-burning success of "Breakaway", RCA Records pushed back the release of Clarkson's next single, moved the release of the album to November and titled it Breakaway to attract fans of the song. "Breakaway" is one of the songs with the most longevity on the Hot 100, not leaving until July 2005; this can be partly attributed to its steady digital download sales, which have gained the single a RIAA gold certification.

"Breakaway" spent a record twenty consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. The song also shares the record for the longest run at number one for a female artist — twenty-one weeks — with Céline Dion's "A New Day Has Come". "Breakaway" is the longest running number-one on the chart from a film soundtrack

Pieces of Me" is a song by American pop/rock singer Ashlee Simpson and the first single from her début album, Autobiography. "Pieces of Me" was released as the first single from Autobiography in mid-2004, prior to the album's release in July; it peaked at number five in the United States (on the Billboard Hot 100), and contributed to the considerable success of Autobiography, which went triple platinum in the U.S. Outside of the U.S., the song enjoyed some chart success as well, reaching the top ten in a number of countries. As of 2011, it remains Simpson's most successful song, and her only song to reach the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. The song became her best charting single and it is Simpson's biggest hit to date.

The single was certified gold in October 2004 and platinum in January 2005. "Pieces of Me" was number 39 on Billboard's 2004 year end Hot 100 Singles & Tracks chart and number 36 on the year end Hot 100 Singles Sales chart.     The U.S. CD single was released by Geffen Records on June 29, 2004, and debuted at number three in single sales (behind American Idol stars Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo) with almost 8,000 copies sold

    BRITNEY SPEARS - TOXIC (2004) hit #3
"Toxic" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears from her fourth album, In the Zone. It was released on January 12, 2004, by Jive Records as the second single from the album. After trying to choose between "(I Got That) Boom Boom" and "Outrageous" to be the second single from In the Zone, Spears selected "Toxic" instead. A dance-pop song with electropop influences, "Toxic" features varied instrumentation, such as drums, synthesizers and surf guitar. It is accompanied by high-pitched Bollywood strings and breathy vocals. Its lyrics refer to being addicted to a lover. The song has received critical acclaim by music critics, who deemed it as the strongest track of In the Zone, while praising its hook and chorus.

"Toxic" attained worldwide success, reaching the top-five in fifteen countries, while topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Hungary, Norway and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it became her fourth top ten single. The accompanying music video for the song was directed by Joseph Kahn and features references to Blade Runner, The Seven Year Itch and the films of John Woo. It portrays Spears as a secret agent in the search of a vial of green liquid. After she steals it, she enters an apartment and poisons her unfaithful boyfriend. The video also includes interspersed scenes of Spears naked with diamonds over her body. After Janet Jackson's Superbowl incident, the video was considered too racy for MTV and was moved to late-night programming.

Spears has performed "Toxic" in a number of live appearances, including the 2004 NRJ Music Awards and in three of her concert tours. It was the opening number of The Onyx Hotel Tour (2004), where she sang atop of a bus wearing a black catsuit;  The song has also appeared in feature films such as Knocked Up, You Again and television series Doctor Who. "Toxic" won Spears her first Grammy at the 2005 ceremony in the category of Best Dance Recording, while gaining her credibility amongst critics. The song has been included in lists by Pitchfork, NME and Rolling Stone as one of the best songs of the decade. It has been noted for redefining the sound of dance-pop music. Spears has named "Toxic" as her favorite song from her career.

    NO DOUBT - IT'S MY LIFE (2004) hit #10

It's My Life" is the title of a song by the British synthpop band Talk Talk.  The song was released as a single in January 1984, then again in 1985, and a third time in 1990 when it finally became a hit and reached #13 in the UK. In 2003, it was covered by No Doubt, also making it into the UK Top 20.

No Doubt recorded a cover version of the song to promote their greatest hits album The Singles 1992–2003. Because the band was on hiatus, while lead singer Gwen Stefani recorded her solo debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., they decided to record a cover to avoid having to write a new song. The band listened to hundreds of songs and narrowed it down to "It's My Life" and INXS' 1982 song "Don't Change". No Doubt were dubious about recording a cover and contemplated writing new material However, they decided on "It's My Life" after rehearsing the song with producer Nellee Hooper, referring to it as a "feel good" song. The song was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 47th Grammy Awards. Jacques Lu Cont, the song's programmer, created the Thin White Duke mix of "It's My Life", which won the award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical

The cover was successful in the United States, reaching number ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the chart for 28 weeks. It was moderately successful on adult contemporary stations, reaching number 20 on the Adult Contemporary chart, but had high longevity and appeared atop the Adult Top 40's recurrent chart. The single was more successful in clubs, peaking at number 16 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, and had some play on modern rock stations, reaching number 32 on the Modern Rock Tracks. The Recording Industry Association   On the UK Singles Chart, "It's My Life" debuted at number 20 but was unable to reach a higher position until it was released with a remix of the No Doubt song Bathwater which boosted the single up to number 17.

HILARY DUFF - COME CLEAN (2004) hit #3
Come Clean" is a song recorded by American recording artist Hilary Duff. The song was written by Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks, and produced by latter for Duff's second studio album, Metamorphosis (2003). The song contains influences of electronica, with the lyrics chronicling the protagonist wanting to "come clean" with her love interest, from a strained relationship. The critics received "Come Clean" with mixed reviews. The song was released on January 20, 2004 as the album's second single.

The song peaked at number thirty five, becoming Duff's first top forty single in the US and also her best charting single at the time. But, the song failed to match the success of its predecessor "So Yesterday" in many other countries. It reached a peak of number seventeen in Australia and eighteen in the UK, while charting inside top twenty in Canada, Netherlands, Ireland and New Zealand. A remix of the song by Chris Cox was included on Duff's 2005 compilation album, Most Wanted, and in 2008, another remix of the song by Chico Bennett & Richard "Humpty" Vission was included on Duff's second compilation album Best of Hilary Duff.

The video was nominated in the category of Best Pop Video at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards. Avril Ramona Lavigne (born 27 September 1984) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She was born in Belleville, Ontario, but spent most of her youth in the small town of Napanee. By the age of 15, she had appeared on stage with Shania Twain; by 16, she had signed a two-album recording contract with Arista Records worth more than $2 million. In 2002, when she was 17 years old, Lavigne broke onto the music scene with her debut album Let Go.

In 2004 Lavigne co-wrote "Breakaway" with Matthew Gerard, which was recorded by Kelly Clarkson for the soundtrack to the 2004 film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. "Breakaway" would later be included on Clarkson's second album and released as the album's lead single. Lavigne covered the Goo Goo Dolls song "Iris", performed with the band's lead singer John Rzeznik at Fashion Rocks, and she posed for the cover of Maxim in October 2004. She also recorded the theme song for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. "I made the song a little more edgy", Lavigne said.     JOHN MICHAEL MONTGOMERY - LETTERS FROM HOME (2004) hit #24 (#2 country)
Letters from Home" is the title of a song written by Tony Lane and David Lee, and recorded by American country music singer John Michael Montgomery. It was released in February 2004 as the second single from the album of the same name. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in 2004 and also reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100, his highest-ever peak on that chart.

The song is a portrayal of a soldier's life on overseas duty. In the song, it is mentioned how the soldier's mother and girlfriend write to him during his time overseas. In the first two letters (the first two verses), the letters are shared with a fair share of merriment among the soldier's comrades. The soldier's father is a very stubborn man in the song, but eventually admits to being proud of his son, which drives the son to tears and spreads an aura of solemnity among his comrades, as mentioned in the third verse.

The music video created for this song was filmed at the Army Aviation Support Facility No. 1 in Smyrna, Tenn, and featured National Guard soldiers. Actor and musician Freddy Mullins played the role of the soldier receiving the letters from home.

"Letters from Home" debuted at number 48 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the week of January 31, 2004.

John Michael Montgomery (born January 20, 1965, in Danville, Kentucky) is an American country music artist. He has produced more than thirty singles on the Billboard country charts, including two of Billboard’s Number One country singles of the year: "I Swear" (1994) and "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)" (1995).

KEITH URBAN - DAYS GO BY (2004) hit #31 (#1 country)
Days Go By" is the title of a song co-written and recorded by Australian country music artist Keith Urban. It was released in June 2004 as the lead-off single for his Be Here album, which ends with a variation called "These Are the Days.". It became Urban's fifth Number One single, spending four weeks at the top of the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs chart in late 2004.

Starting with an acoustic guitar phrase and then built in D major around Urban's typical up-tempo banjo/mandolin-driven riffs with exuberant vocal yelps and electric guitar fills, the song's message is a variation on the carpe diem theme, as played off the song's title phrase.

Keith Lionel Urban (born 26 October 1967) is a New Zealand-Australian country music singer, songwriter and guitarist whose commercial success has been mainly in the United States and Australia. Urban was born in New Zealand and began his career in Australia at an early age. In 1991, he released a self-titled debut album, and charted four singles in Australia before moving to the United States in 1992. Eventually, Urban found work as a session guitarist before starting a band known as The Ranch, which recorded one studio album on Capitol Records and charted two singles on the Billboard country charts.

Still signed to Capitol, he made his solo American debut in 1999 with the album Keith Urban. Certified platinum in the U.S., it also produced his first American Number One in "But for the Grace of God". His breakthrough hit was the Number One "Somebody Like You", from his second Capitol album Golden Road (2002). This album also earned Urban his first Grammy Award win for "You'll Think of Me", its fourth single and the fourth Billboard Number One of his career. 2004's Be Here, his third American album, produced three more Number Ones, and became his highest-selling album, earning 4× Multi-Platinum certification. Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing was released in 2006, producing the record-setting No.17 country chart debut of "Once in a Lifetime", as well as Urban's second Grammy for the song "Stupid Boy", while a Greatest Hits package entitled Greatest Hits: 18 Kids followed in late 2007.

    MARIO WINANS - I DON'T WANNA KNOW (2004) hit #2
I Don't Wanna Know" is the title of a song by American R&B artist Mario Winans, featuring a rap by P. Diddy and sampling from Enya's song "Boadicea". It reached number-one in the United Kingdom and in Netherlands, and #2 (for 8 consecutive weeks) in the United States, and remains Winans' only major success to date. Its eight weeks at #2 also put the song in joint fifth place for the most weeks at #2 by a song which did not go to #1, behind Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You", Missy Elliott's "Work It", Donna Lewis's "I Love You Always Forever" and Shania Twain's "You're Still the One".
Mario Winans is an American R&B singer, songwriter, music producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Born Mario Brown, he is the son of gospel recording artist Vickie Winans (née Bowman) and her first husband, Bishop Ronald Brown. He is also the stepson of his mother's second husband, gospel singer, Pastor Marvin Winans whom she married in 1978. Marvin and Vickie Winans had a son, Marvin Winans Jr. (Mario's half brother.) Vickie and Marvin Winans divorced in 1995 and she has since remarried.

The first single "I Don't Wanna Know" was based on a sample of the Fugees' 1996 hit single "Ready Or Not", which itself was based on a slowed-down sample of the instrumental track "Boadicea" by Enya from her 1987 self-titled album. Enya and her representatives became angry since Winans did not seek her approval for the sample, as he was unaware that the Fugees sample he had used had itself been a sample. So, a compromise was reached to credit the single as "Mario Winans featuring P. Diddy and Enya".  The song features a rap by P. Diddy and radio programmers and club DJs started playing the track when it started appearing on mixtapes. The song was released as the single in early 2004 and became a worldwide hit going to #1 in Germany and on the rhythmic top 40 radio chart in the United States; to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, on the US R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart, and on the world internet download charts; and to #3 on a composite world R&B chart (based on the R&B charts in the US, UK, Germany, France, and Australia) and on both the Australian and Norwegian singles charts. It also reached the top ten on a composite European singles chart.

No Place That Far received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), while the other three albums all were certified platinum. Scandalous" was the first single from Mis-Teeq's second album, Eye Candy. Released in 2003, the song became a major hit in the UK, Australia and many European countries. In 2004, the song was chosen as the trio's debut single in the United States, where it managed to reach number thirty-five on the Billboard Hot 100.

Due to the song's popularity, it has been featured in many advertisements and promotions. The song, along with Mis-Teeq were featured in Coca-Cola television commercials in 2003, coinciding around its release schedule, resulting in extra publicity. The song was then featured in promotions for the 2004 film Catwoman. Originally, the film's theme song was to be Britney Spears' "Outrageous", but Spears broke her knee on the set of the music video, and the idea was scrapped resulting in "Scandalous" becoming the theme song. "Scandalous" was then covered, and used in an 'Armani Code' perfume commercial by Giorgio Armani. In 2007 an operatic version was recorded and used in promotional adverts for the BBC period drama Cranford, an adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's book of the same name.

JET - ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL (2004) hit #29

Are You Gonna Be My Girl" is a song by the Australian rock band Jet, featured on their 2003 album Get Born. It was the first single from the album, released in 2003 in Australia and the UK, and in 2004 in the United States. Written by Nic Cester & Cameron Muncey, the song is often cited for similarities to Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" (particularly its drum pattern and near-identical guitar riff). The band, however, argues that "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" has more in common with 60s' Motown songs, namely "I'm Ready For Love" by Martha And The Vandellas and "You Can't Hurry Love" by The Supremes.

Jet was an Australian rock band formed in 2001 while attending St Bede's College Mentone in Melbourne. The band consisted of lead guitarist Cameron Muncey, bassist Mark Wilson, and brothers Nic and Chris Cester on vocals/rhythm guitar and drums respectively.     KANYE WEST - JESUS WALKS (2004) hit #11

July 28th 2004 - my #7 favorite daily song for 37 days at age 33 while I was dating Tasha.

    NICKELBACK - SOMEDAY (2004) hit #7
Someday" is the title of a song recorded by Canadian rock band Nickelback. It was released in August 2003 as the lead single from their 2003 album The Long Road. It reached #1 in Canada for three weeks and #7 in the United States. It also charted in the Top 10 of the UK singles chart, where it peaked at #6.

The lyrics chronicle a failed relationship; the singer talks about how a relationship failed and he wonders "how the hell'd we wind up like this". He wishes that they could discuss their issues instead of breaking up.

In the music video, we get the same impression that the song is about a failed relationship: a woman bursts into tears after reading a newspaper with someone who appears to be her boyfriend close by her side. As she leaves the house with a suitcase (echoing the lyrics "I wish you'd [...] unpack your suitcase"), we can see the boyfriend stepping into spilled milk without leaving any traces or footprints. Later in the street, the woman leaves crying in her car while the boyfriend is apparently trying to convince her to come back, but she doesn't notice him and just cries more. She drives off and as she looks into her rear-view mirror, she can only see an empty street where her boyfriend was standing only seconds ago. The boyfriend chases her through the street and catches up to her car but only to witness a semi-truck crashing into it at the last second, killing her in front of his eyes. Her spirit resurrects and she can be seen walking from the crowd of spectators to her boyfriend and smiling. The two reunite with tearful hugs and they walk away together. As they pass a newspaper vending machine, the news reveals that it was her boyfriend who died in another accident the day before (presumably a bridge accident). Therefore it can be said that the reason nobody can see, hear, or notice him is because he was just a spirit from the previous accident at the time. Meanwhile, the band is playing in a room near a glass window.

On an alternate version, the woman walks away from the accident alive and unharmed instead of a ghost of her. The man then hugs her from behind, but she walks away from him and he disappears.
