NIA PEEPLES - STREET OF DREAMS (1991) hit #12
Album: Nia Peeples (1991)
November 11th 1991 - my #1 favorite top 40 hit for 8 weeks straight
making it my #1 favorite top 40 hit of 1991. I was age 20 in 3rd year
University.
I had bought the CD because I liked the single Street Of Dreams as
this was a very mature serious dance/pop song which reminded me a bit of
Jane Child.
Her most successful
pop single is "Street Of Dreams," which hit #12 on the Hot 100 in
1991.
CORINA - TEMPTATION (1991) hit #6
Album: Corina (1991)
September 5th 1991 - my #1 favorite daily song for 13 days.
A nice dark dramatic top 40 dance song that I went out and bought the
CD.
August 24th 1991 - my #1 weekly favorite song in the top 40 for 3
weeks.
"Temptation" was the fourth single release from freestyle
singer
Corina and the first single from her debut album,
Corina. It was her biggest hit, peaking at number 6 in the U.S
Billboard Pop Charts
Corina Katt Ayala best known only as Corina,
is a
dance pop singer from
Manhattan,
New York. She released a self-titled album on
Atco Records in 1991, and charted string of dance hits
in the US between 1989 and 1997. The highest charting of
these was the summer 1991 top ten hit "Temptation", which
peaked at #6 on the U.S. charts. Corina portrayed
Frida Kahlo in the 1999 film
Cradle Will Rock
PAULA ABDUL - BLOWING KISSES IN THE WIND (1991)
hit #6
December 28th 1991 - my #1 favorite top 40 song for 4 weeks into my
21st birthday
January 3rd 1992 - my #1 favorite daily song on my 21st birthday
My favorite Paula Abdul song - a nice dramatic lush minor ballad.
Blowing Kisses in the Wind" was the third single from
Paula Abdul's album,
Spellbound. The music video featured Abdul dancing
on a theater stage, ballet-style. Like her other videos it
got strong play on
MTV.
The song was written by Peter Lord.
The song was another popular hit for Abdul, peaking at #6
on the
Billboard Hot 100 and at #4 in Canada
AMY GRANT - EVERY HEARTBEAT (1991) hit #2
Every Heartbeat"
is a 1991 single by
Christian music singer
Amy
Grant. It was released as the third single from the
Heart In Motion album, though it was the second from the album
to be released to mainstream
pop
radio. After the unexpected major success of Grant's previous single, "Baby
Baby," which topped both the United States'
Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts, there seemed the
question on how to follow it up. The chosen single was "Every
Heartbeat," and although it did not hit number one, it still managed to
make the #2 spot on the Hot 100 and the Adult Contemporary chart.
Charlie Peacock wrote the song's music and chorus lyrics, with Grant
and
Wayne Kirkpatrick composing the remaining lyrics. In 2004,
Sixpence None The Richer covered "Every Heartbeat" on the album
Full Circle: A Celebration of Songs and Friends, which commemorated
Charlie Peacock's 20-year anniversary as a solo recording artist.
Mark Lowry parodied the song with the title "Every Teacher".
Amy Lee Grant (born November 25, 1960) is an American
singer-songwriter, musician, author,
media personality and actress, best known for her
Christian music. She has been referred to as "The Queen
of Christian Pop". As of 2009, Grant remains the
best-selling contemporary Christian music singer ever,
having sold over 30 million units worldwide.
Grant made
her debut as a teenager, and gained fame in
Christian music during the 1980s with such hits as
"Father's Eyes", "El
Shaddai", and "Angels".
In 1986, she scored her first
Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song in a duet with Peter Cetera
The Next Time I Fall. During the 1980s and 1990s, she
became one of the first gospel artists to
cross over into mainstream pop on the heels of her
successful albums
Unguarded and
Heart in Motion, the latter of which included the
No. 1 single "Baby
Baby".
The song
became Jackson's fifth number-one single on the
Billboard Hot 100, the final of seven top five
singles from the album, making her the only artist to
achieve seven top five singles from one album. The success
of "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" also helped the album
to become the only in history to produce number-one hits on
the Billboard Hot 100 in three separate calendar
years, those being "Miss You Much" in 1989, "Escapade" and
"Black Cat" in 1990, and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)"
in 1991.
In 1996, the song was
remixed by Roger Sanchez. The Single Edit was included
on the international release of Jackson's 1996 greatest hits
compilation
Design of a Decade 1986/1996. Although being one of
the album's last singles, it was one of the first songs
recorded for Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814. The
song's background vocals were recorded in late 1988, while
Jackson recorded the lead vocals in January 1989.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis tooled on the idea of making
this song a duet. According to
Fred Bronson's The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits,
they thought about possibly getting
Prince,
Johnny Gill,
Ralph Tresvant, or anyone else working with them at the
time. However, there was no concrete plan. During the
recording of the first verse, Jimmy Jam tells Jackson, "Sing
it low like some guy would sing it." As a result, they kept
the idea of her singing the first verse in a low octave but
go an octave up on the second verse.
The poem was set to the tune of a popular
British song written by
John Stafford Smith for the
Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in
London. "The Anacreontic Song" (or "To
Anacreon in Heaven"), with various lyrics, was already
popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed
"The Star-Spangled Banner", it would soon become a
well-known American patriotic song. With a range of one and
a half octaves, it is known for being difficult to sing.
Although the poem has four
stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today.
With America entangled in the
Persian Gulf War, Houston performed "The
Star Spangled Banner" at
Super Bowl XXV at
Tampa Stadium on January 27, 1991. Due to overwhelming
response to her rendition, it was released as a commercial
single and video of her performance, and reached the Top 20
on the US Hot 100, making her the only act to turn the
national anthem into a pop hit of that magnitude (Jose
Feliciano's version reached No. 50 in November 1968).
Houston donated all her share of the proceeds to the
American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund. As a result, the
singer was named to the Red Cross Board of Governors.
Her rendition was critically acclaimed and is considered
the benchmark for singers. Rolling Stone commented
that "her singing stirs such strong patriotism.
Unforgettable", and the performance ranked No. 1 on the 25
most memorable music moments in NFL history list. VH1 listed
the performance as one of the greatest moments that rocked
TV. Following the attacks on 9/11, it was released again by
Arista Records, all profits going towards the firefighters
and victims of the attacks. This time it peaked at No. 6 in
the Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the
Recording Industry Association of America.
MARTIKA - LOVE THY WILL BE DONE (1991) hit #10
Love... Thy Will Be Done" was the first single
released from
Martika's second album,
Martika's Kitchen. The
Prince-produced single, written by Martika and Prince,
reached the top ten of the pop charts in the U.S., UK,
France and Australia. The single was released on July 25,
1991.
This song introduced Martika to a more
adult contemporary sound than her previous efforts. The
song is particularly remarkable for its constant backline,
played by the drums and the bass, without any variation
throughout the song, neither as far as rhythm or intensity
are concerned, independently of other effects in the song
(climax, forte, piano, backing vocals, etc.). Similarly, the
melody insists particularly on monochord lines and repeats
the "love thy will be done" notes as a
leitmotiv.
The distinctive black-and-white
music video was directed by
Michael Haussman. Prince has performed this song during
his tours in the later 1990s and in 2012. Prince also used a
sample of this song for his cover of "One
of Us" on his triple album
Emancipation.
Martika (born as Marta Marrero, May 18,
1969) is an American pop singer-songwriter and actress of
Cuban descent. As a singer she released two
internationally successful albums in the late 1980s and
early 1990s, selling over four million copies worldwide.
Her first album, 1988's
Martika, spawned the song “Toy
Soldiers,” which she co-wrote with her producer Michael
Jay, and became a top 5 hit in the United Kingdom and many
other countries. In the US, "Toy Soldiers" spent two weeks
at #1 and was certified
Gold by the
RIAA. Two additional releases also went Top 40 in the
US: "More
Than You Know"(#18) and "I
Feel the Earth Move"(#25), which was a remake of
Carole King’s #1 from her album
Tapestry. Both of those tracks also hit the top 20
on the US Dance charts and the UK singles chart.
In 1991 Martika was approached by
Prince to record some of his tracks. Among these was her
second (and last) US Top 10 single,
Love... Thy Will Be Done, which also became a Top 10 hit
in the UK and #1 in Australia. Her second album,
Martika's Kitchen, peaked at #111
THE DIVINYLS - I TOUCH MYSELF (1991) hit #15
Album: Divinyls (1991)
April 9th 1991 - my #9 favorite daily song for 13 days at age 20 in
2nd year University.
April 20th 1991 - my #2 favorite current top 40 hit for 2 weeks
behind Hold You Tight by Tara Kemp.
Divinyls were an Australian
rock
band formed in
Sydney in 1980 and featuring
vocalist
Christina Amphlett and
guitarist
Mark McEntee. As the focal point, Amphlett performed on
stage wearing a school uniform and fishnet stockings, often
using an illuminated neon tube as a prop and displaying
aggression towards band members and the audience. The band,
originally a five-piece, underwent numerous lineup changes
with Amphlett and McEntee as the core members, before
breaking up in 1996.
April 24th
1991 - my #3 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 20 in 2nd year
University. I thought she was very sexy and this song was a huge hit and
became my favorite for a while.
April 20th 1991 - my #1 favorite current top 40 hit for 3 weeks.
"Hold You Tight," written by
singer-songwriter Will Hammond Jr., achieved RIAA
gold status and reached No. 3 on the
Billboard Hot 100
chart. It was followed by another
Top 10 single, "Piece of My Heart," which reached No. 7.
Kemp's quick success was short-lived, however, as her third
single "Too Much" stalled at No. 95, with further releases
failing to chart at all. She also
recorded a
song entitled "Action Speaks Louder Than Words," which
was featured on the
soundtrack for the
Fox television series,
Beverly Hills, 90210. "Come Correct" was released in
1994.
Giant Records folded not long thereafter, leaving
Kemp—along with labelmates
Jade,
Color Me Badd,
Jeremy Jordan, and many others—without recording deals.
AFTER 7 - HEAT OF THE MOMENT (1991) hit #19
Album: After 7 (1989)
Catchy R&B/dance pop song.
May 2nd 1991 - my #2 favorite song for 8 days at age 20 around the
time that I saw them in concert open for Whitney Houston at SaskPlace. I
had bought this album at a book/record sale.
After 7 is an
R&B group founded in 1988 by brothers
Melvin and
Kevon Edmonds, and Keith Mitchell. The Edmonds brothers
are the siblings of popular
pop and R&B
singer-songwriter-producer
Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds" (Melvin is older, and Kevon
- born Kevin - is younger). Mitchell was long thought to be
the cousin of Babyface's then-partner,
songwriter-producer
Antonio "L.A." Reid, however, this was actually set up
as a marketing tool for the group and was actually
incorrect.
Virgin Records released their self-titled debut album in
autumn 1989, which included the hits "Heat
of the Moment", "Can't
Stop" and the quiet-storm staple "Ready
or Not". After promoting the album and seeing it go
platinum, they scored a hit with the
Motown-influenced "Nights Like This" on 1991's
The Five Heartbeats soundtrack. The trio returned
with
Takin' My Time in 1992, which included the hit cover
of
The Originals' "Baby
I'm For Real". The trio released their last album,
Reflections in 1995, which included the hit "'Til
You Do Me Right
This song hit #19 in 1990.
EXTREME - HOLE HEARTED (1991) hit #4
Hole Hearted" is a
folk rock song by American group
Extreme. The song was released as the 4th single from
their successful
Pornograffitti album in 1991 and reached #4 on the
Billboard Top 100. It also charted at #12 in the
UK Singles Chart.
Although the song's chart position
was lower compared to the band's previous hit, "More
Than Words" (#1 in the US, #2 in the UK), it remains
their second-highest charting song overall. Like "More Than
Words", the style of this song is different from the
majority of its parent album.
Extreme is an American
rock band, headed by frontmen
Gary Cherone and
Nuno Bettencourt, that reached the height of their
popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Among some
of Extreme's musical influences are
Aerosmith,
Led Zeppelin,
Queen, the band played at
The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992, also jammed
with Brian May and
Van Halen, and Cherone joined Van Halen in 1996). The
band has described their music as "Funky Metal" in the early
days, but it would evolve much more in the mid-90s by
blending classic rock influences with post-grunge and
alternative rock.
They have released five studio albums, two EPs (in
Japan) and two compilation albums since their formation.
The band was one of the most successful rock acts of the
early 1990s, selling over 10 million albums
worldwide.Extreme achieved their greatest success with their
1990 album
Pornograffitti, which peaked at number 10 on the
Billboard 200, and was certified gold in May 1991 and
2×platinum in October 1992 That album featured the
acoustic
ballad single "More
Than Words," which reached #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 in
the United States.
LONDONBEAT - I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT YOU (1991) hit #1
I've Been Thinking About You" is a song recorded by
Londonbeat. It was released as a single in the last
months of 1990 in many countries.
It hit number one on the
Billboard Hot 100
on April 13, 1991, having hit number two in the
United Kingdom the previous year. The song also topped
the singles charts in Spain, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland,
Austria, the Netherlands and Australia.
Part of the song was
sampled and prominently featured in the song "Physical"
recorded by
Alcazar.
A demo of "I've Been Thinking About You" surfaced on audio cassettes
and circulated amongst record companies around the time Londonbeat
released their début in 1988. "I've Been Thinking About You" was
originally intended for release on Speak. However, record labels
advised the band to hold off releasing the song on their debut LP so
that the band could, as labels said, "... find its footing; develop an
audience". The demo recording, originally completed in late 1987, is
currently circulating on the internet, and originally brought to the
internet's attention in a link to a Londonbeat on a German message board
in 2006. German magazines, however, reported on the song just as
Speak was being released in 1988.
WHITNEY HOUSTON - ALL THE MAN THAT I NEED (1991) hit #1
All the Man That I Need" is a song written by
American songwriters
Dean Pitchford and
Michael Gore. The song was first recorded by
Linda Clifford in 1982, for her album I'll Keep on
Loving You. Pitchford and Gore (who wrote the song "Red
Light" from
Fame for her in 1980) had in mind Clifford and her
husband when they wrote the song. It was later recorded and
released as a single by the musical group
Sister Sledge. Their version reached number 45 on the
United States Billboard
R&B Singles chart. Later, in 1989, American recording
artist
Whitney Houston recorded her version and subsequently
released it as a single in 1990. Her version featured
production from
Narada Michael Walden. In 1994,
Luther Vandross (who made the arrangements of the
original Linda Clifford version) included his own version,
"All the Woman That I Need" on his album "Songs". Musically,
the song is an
R&B number, and the lyrics speak about a special one.
Houston's version became a major hit, received mainly
positive reviews from music critics, and reached number one
on the US
Billboard Hot 100 chart; it remains as her fourth
biggest hit in that chart. It also peaked at number one on
the Billboard R&B Singles and Adult Contemporary
charts. Elsewhere, the song reached number one in Canada,
while peaking within the top 20 in Ireland, Netherlands, and
the United Kingdom, while reaching the top 40 in countries
like Austria, France, Germany, New Zealand, and Switzerland.
He combined elements of hip-hop and
new jack swing, which resulted in a number 20 hit, "I'll
Do 4 U," from his debut
album,
Father's Day, in 1990. The backing track
sampled from "Got
To Be Real" by
Cheryl Lynn. This track is notable for the first
appearance of
Mary J. Blige as a backup singer, and it was also her
first major record appearance, considered by many to be an
important stepping stone to her career.
Nearly two years after his debut he followed with "Close
to You". Its success was almost guaranteed by his appearance
on the
CD
Uptown MTV Unplugged. During that time he also
contributed a street lifestyle track titled "Pimp or Die" on
the
Who's the Man? (original
movie
soundtrack).
In 2006 Father MC was asked to appear on the annual
BET Awards. In 2007 he re-introduced himself under a "Fambody".
I Don't Know Anybody Else" is a 1989 song recorded by
the
Italo-house music band
Black Box. It was the second
single from their debut album
Dreamland and was released in the first months of
1990 in most of countries worldwide.
The song had a great
success on many charts, including the
Irish,
Swiss,
Norwegian and
UK Charts where it reached the top 5. In other
countries, the single peaked between #5 and #10. It was the
second Black Box's best-selling single, behind "Ride
on Time". The song entered the UK Charts on 17 February
1990 and remained for 8 weeks.
The song features an un-credited
Martha Wash on lead vocals. Wash later sued the record
label for royalties and directly contributed to legislation
ensuring proper credit for vocalists on both songs and
music videos
Black Box remain
one of the few piano-house groups to achieve
mainstream success in the USA. Dreamland
earned a gold disc in both the
UK and the
US and achieved double-platinum status in
Australia, where it spent eight weeks at #1
during early 1991. Along the way, it also
spawned six massive hit singles, both on the
mainstream charts and in the clubs.
The song is about LL
searching for a girl who is streetwise. The single samples
Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long",
Keni Burke's "Risin' To the Top", and
The Honey Drippers' "Impeach the President", which is
used as the main instrumental element of the song. It is
also noted that this song is an early example of the high
pitched sample rap. Around the Way Girl later
appeared on LL Cool J's 1996 greatest hits album,
All World: Greatest Hits.
"Around the Way Girl" peaked at #2 on the
Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first top 10 single. It
also was a hit on the R&B and dance music charts, where it
peaked at #1 and #1 respectively. The RIAA certified "Around
the Way Girl" Gold on January 15, 1991 for sales of over
500,000 copies.
As he grew older, Smith found a way to escape the effects
of his abuse, and his bullying attitude: hip-hop music. He
fell in love with it at the age of nine, and by 11 he was
writing lyrics and making his own songs with some DJ
equipment his grandmother gave him to stop him riding
motorcycles or doing karate. Before too long, LL was an
established member of the Hip-Hop community in his area. He
gained notoriety through his many rap battles against
well-established MC.
EXTREME - MORE THAN WORDS (1991) hit #1
More Than Words" is a
ballad written and originally performed by the rock band
Extreme. It is built around acoustic guitar work by
Nuno Bettencourt and the vocals of
Gary Cherone (with harmony vocals from Bettencourt).
Released in 1990 on the album
Extreme II: Pornograffiti, the song marked a
departure from the
funk metal that had permeated the band's style previous
to its release.
The song was described by Bettencourt as a
song warning that the phrase "I love you" was becoming
meaningless: "People use it so easily and so lightly that
they think you can say that and fix everything, or you can
say that and everything's OK. Sometimes you have to do more
and you have to show it – there's other ways to say 'I love
you
On March 23, 1991, "More Than Words" entered the U.S.
Billboard Hot 100 at number 81 and soon after
reached number one. It also reached number two in the
United Kingdom, where the group had had success before
its American breakthrough. Though they had made a few
European charts before, this brought the band to their first
mainstream success in the United States.
Extreme followed "More Than Words" with another power
ballad, "Hole
Hearted", which was slightly faster paced than "More
Than Words", but nevertheless topped at number four in the
United States and number three in Canada
EMF - UNBELIEVABLE (1991) hit #1
Unbelievable" is a song written and recorded by
Gloucestershire
indie/alternative
dance band
EMF, originally appearing on their debut album
Schubert Dip. It was released as a single in the UK
in 1990, peaking in the
UK Singles Chart at number three on 1 December 1990. It
was the 32nd best-selling single of 1990 in the UK. In the
United States, it hit number one on the
Billboard Hot 100 on 20 July 1991; if one counts
a #1 twice if it had two runs at the top (analogous to
the official system of numbering U.S. presidents), it
was the 1,000th #1 in Billboard history.
The song
contains samples of US comedian
Andrew Dice Clay throughout the track, including the
loud exclamation of "oh!" at the start of each chorus along
with the words "you're unbelievable" spoken at the end of
the first chorus. The track was produced by
Ralph Jezzard
Furthermore, in the UK (where the band hailed from), the
B-side of the single was a track called "EMF" which included
the refrain: E! Ecstasy! M! Motherfucker, motherfucker!
F! From us to you....
"Unbelievable" also samples the word "One" that comes in
the refrain "Ya Kid K is the one", from the song
Spin That Wheel by Euro-Dance act "Hi-Tek 3" featuring
Ya Kid K. "Hi-Tek 3" is a side project from the
successful dance act
Technotronic.
The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" is a song
written by
Rudy Clark. The song was made a hit when recorded by
Betty Everett, who hit No. 1 on the
Cashbox magazine R&B charts with it in 1964. Recorded by
dozens of artists and groups around the world in the decades
since, the song became an international hit when remade by
Cher in 1991.
Cher's remake was cut for the soundtrack
of her 1990 film
Mermaids in which it played under the closing
credits, and the single's U.S. release coincided with the
November release of the film. The lackluster box office
performance of Mermaids was mirrored by the chart
performance of "The Shoop Shoop Song" single, which peaked
at No. 33 in January 1991, signaling the end of the
hit-streak Cher had enjoyed in the U.S. since 1987.
The lack of American enthusiasm for Cher's "The Shoop
Shoop Song" led to another cut, her remake of
Barbara Lewis' "Baby
I'm Yours", being the lead single from the Mermaids
soundtrack in the UK and Continental Europe. However, after
that song failed to become a hit – barely scraping the UK
charts at No. 89 — "The Shoop Shoop Song" was issued as a
single, backed with "Baby I'm Yours", and reached No. 1 on
the UK chart of May 4, 1991, staying atop the chart for five
weeks. Cher's first solo number one. Her last number one was
back in 1965 with Sonny: "I
Got You Babe."
Cher's "The Shoop Shoop Song" was also a No. 1 hit in
Austria, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, Norway and Spain;
the single achieved a No. 2 peak in Australia and Top Ten
status in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden
and Switzerland.
The success of the single in the UK and Continental
Europe was reflected in its addition to
Love Hurts, her subsequent album, as released in
those parts of the world, Australia and New Zealand. "The
Shoop Shoop Song" was also included in the album's Canadian
release but in the U.S. "The Shoop Shoop Song" was not
available on a Cher album until the 1999 release of
If I Could Turn Back Time: Cher's Greatest Hits.
The original 1989
12" single release constituted the second of The KLF's
"Pure Trance" series. There were two issues, numbered 005T
(pink writing on a black sleeve, featuring two KLF mixes)
and 005R (black writing on a pink sleeve, featuring four
more mixes, including remixes by
The Orb and
The Moody Boys).
A version heavily reworked for a mainstream audience, "3
a.m. Eternal (Live at the S.S.L.)", was issued in January
1991 and
hit # 1 in the
UK singles chart and # 5 in the
US
Billboard Hot 100. This version featured a
rap by
Ricardo da Force. The "S.S.L." in the subtitle refers to
a
Solid State Logic mixing desk. Although a lot of crowd
noise features on the mix, it is in fact a purely
studio-based creation. The seven inch version of this mix
appears on the album
The White Room. Concurrent with the chart-topping
version, yet another 12" was released, featuring resolutely
underground remixes by The Moody Boys.
CRYSTAL WATERS - GYPSY WOMAN (SHE'S HOMELESS) (1991) hit #8
Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" (also released as "Gypsy
Woman (La da dee la da da)") is a
house music song by
American singer
Crystal Waters. It was written by Clarke Foss, Neal
Conway, Nathaniel S. Hardy, Jr. and Waters and is the first
single from her 1991 debut album,
Surprise. The song includes the chorus of "La da dee,
la da da" and a much-sampled organ
refrain that is similar to
gospel music.
Slant Magazine ranked the song 48th in its 100
Greatest Dance Songs list, adding: ""Gypsy Woman" sets its
portrait of a crusty, haphazardly made-up bag lady begging
dementedly on street corners to the Basement Boys's
unforgivingly brutish, mongoloid thump".
When the song was descending the charts, it appeared on
the benefit album
Red Hot + Dance in a new incarnation mixed by
Joey Negro, who took the song into a new musical
direction.
"Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" was the highest-debuting
single for a new act in the
UK Singles Chart at that time - its debut at 3 was later
eclipsed by
Gabrielle's "Dreams"
entering at two, and then by
Whigfield's "Saturday Night" entering at 1.
SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES - KISS THEM FOR ME (1991)
Kiss Them for Me" is a song written and recorded by
English rock band
Siouxsie and the Banshees and produced by
Stephen Hague. It was released in 1991 as the first
single from the band's tenth studio album
Superstition.
Melody Maker praised it as "gorgeous, wicked,
glamorous and utterly self-aware. Pretty in pink".
The song presented a change in musical direction for
Siouxsie and the Banshees, adopting a much more
straightforward pop-oriented feel than previous efforts, due
in large part to Hague's production work. It is a mid-tempo
track with an uplifting melody and South Asian
instrumentation which had become popular in the UK club
scene due to the growth of
bhangra.
Tabla player
Talvin Singh (future percussionist of
Björk on her 1993's
Debut album) took part in the sessions and also sang
during the bridge.
The song uses a sample of
Schooly D's "P.S.K.
What Does It Mean?" in the background. Even with its
positive sound, Siouxsie Sioux's cryptic lyrics are an ode
to actress and sex icon
Jayne Mansfield
– using the actress' catchword "divoon", referring to her
heart-shaped swimming pool and her love of champagne and
parties, and to the grisly automobile accident which claimed
her life in 1967.
Kiss Them for Me was also the name of a
20th Century Fox motion picture made in 1957 starring
Mansfield and
Cary Grant.
"Kiss Them for Me" is Siouxsie and the Banshees' biggest
hit in the United States. It became their second (and to
date, last) entry on the
Billboard Hot 100 and their first single to hit the top
40, peaking at number 23.
It also became the band's second chart-topper on the U.S.
Modern Rock Tracks chart, spending five weeks at number
1 during the summer of 1991. "Kiss Them for Me" was the
first Banshees song to hit the top 10 on the U.S.
Hot Dance Club Play chart, peaking at number 8. It also
spent several months in heavy rotation on
MTV.
In the UK, "Kiss Them for Me" peaked at number 32, the
band's 16th top-40 single.
PAULA ABDUL - PROMISE OF A NEW DAY (1991) hit #1
The Promise of a New Day" is the second single (and
lead-off track) from American artist
Paula Abdul's album
Spellbound. The song was written by Peter Lord and
V. Jeffrey Smith. The single was released to radio while the
hit "Rush
Rush" was still at the top of radio airplay and the pop
charts.
The song hit #1 on the
Billboard Hot 100 on September 14, 1991, becoming
Abdul's sixth chart-topping single, and her last #1 hit to
date.
The video for the song was recorded in front of a green
screen in
Hawaii. However, since Abdul was unable to film the clip
due to other commitments, she shot the necessary scenes
elsewhere, which were then edited into the video.
The video caused controversy when originally aired mainly
because it appeared to make Abdul look thinner than she
actually was. However, on
Pop Up Video, VH1 (and Abdul in a filmed segment)
secured that the clip had been edited in such a way as to
make the dancers appear closer together.
In that same episode, Abdul admitted that she fell in
heels during filming of the dance sequences.
R.E.M. - SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE (1991) hit #10
Shiny Happy People" is a song by the band
R.E.M.. The song appeared on their 1991 album
Out of Time and was released as a
single in the same year. The song features guest vocals
by
Kate Pierson of
the B-52's, who also has a prominent role in the song's
music video.
It peaked at #10 on the
Billboard Hot 100, the fourth and, to date, last
R.E.M. single to reach the top 10 on the chart. It also
peaked at #6 on the
UK Singles Chart, becoming the first R.E.M. song to
reach the top ten in the UK and the only one to reach the
top ten in both countries.
It was recorded during the autumn of 1990, and was first
released as a single in May 1991 in the U.K. However, the
single would not go on sale in the U.S.A. until four months
later.
In 2005,
Q magazine included the song in a list of "Ten Terrible
Records by Great Artists". In its 2006 "Song of the Summer" countdown,
CBC Radio's
Freestyle named "Shiny Happy People" 1991's "Song of the
Summer". In contrast, in 2006, the song received the number one position
on AOL Music's
list of the "111 Wussiest Songs of All Time".
Blender magazine also ranked the song at #35 on its list of the
"50 Worst Songs Ever". Also, when talking about the ill-fated song in
1995 on
Space Ghost Coast to Coast Stipe simply stated "I hate that
song, Space Ghost." Due to the band's dislike of the song, it was one of
their few Warner-released singles not included on their 2003 greatest
hits album
In Time. However, it was later included on their 2011 greatest
hits album
Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982–2011
R.E.M. guitarist
Peter Buck wrote the main riff and chorus to the song on
a mandolin while watching television one day. Buck had just
bought the instrument and was attempting to learn how to
play it, recording the music as he practiced. Buck said that
"when I listened back to it the next day, there was a bunch
of stuff that was really just me learning how to play
mandolin, and then there's what became 'Losing My Religion',
and then a whole bunch more of me learning to play the
mandolin."
Recording of the song started in September 1990 at
Bearsville Studio A in
Woodstock, New York. The song was arranged in the studio
with mandolin, electric bass, and drums. Bassist
Mike Mills came up with a bassline inspired by the work
of
Fleetwood Mac bassist
John McVie; by his own admission he could not come up
with one for the song that was not derivative. Buck said the
arrangement of the song "had a hollow feel to it. There's
absolutely no midrange on it, just low end and high end,
because Mike usually stayed pretty low on the bass." The
band decided to have touring guitarist
Peter Holsapple play
acoustic guitar on the recording. Buck reflected, "It
was really cool: Peter and I would be in our little booth,
sweating away, and Bill and Mike would be out there in the
other room going at it. It just had a really magical feel."
Singer
Michael Stipe's vocal was recorded in a single take.
Orchestral strings, arranged by Mark Bingham, were added to
the song by members of the
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Soundscape Studios in
Atlanta, Georgia in October 1990

THE URBAN DANCE SQUAD - DEEPER SHADE OF SOUL (1991) hit #21
Deeper Shade of Soul" is the debut
single by
Dutch band
Urban Dance Squad. It was taken from their debut album
Mental Floss for the Globe and samples the
Ray Baretto song he recorded in 1968 with a similar name ("A Deeper
Shade of Soul"). Originally released in 1990, the single reached number
21 on the
Billboard Hot 100 in March 1991 and stayed on the charts for 18
weeks. In the
United States it is the song for which the band is best known for,
being their only hit single
Urban Dance Squad was a
Dutchrap
rock band formed after what was originally intended as a one-time
jam-session at a festival in
Utrecht on December 20, 1986. The band consisted of a guitarist, a
bassist, a drummer, a rapper and a DJ. Their music is described as a
blend of genres, including
funk,
soul,
heavy metal,
hip hop,
reggae,
jazz and
ska and is
often compared to that of
Rage Against the Machine, the
Red Hot Chili Peppers and
Fishbone. Urban Dance Squad were one of the most successful Dutch
bands of the nineties, releasing five studio albums
