BRITNEY SPEARS - BABY ONE MORE TIME (1998)

Album: Baby One More Time (1998)

December 19th 1998 - my #1 favorite current top 40 song for 12 weeks which made it my #1 favorite song of 1999.

March 7th 1999 - my #3 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 28. I loved the song when it hit radio and I was one of the first people to rush out and buy the album as it turned up a seller had new sealed copies at a flea market I went to and I picked it up. I was propably the first male over 28 to do so.

...Baby One More Time" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears. It served as Spears' debut single and title track from her debut studio album, ...Baby One More Time (1999). Written by Max Martin and produced by Martin, Rami Yacoub and Denniz Pop, "...Baby One More Time" was released on September 30, 1998, by Jive Records. After recording and sending a demo tape with an unused song from Toni Braxton, Spears signed a multi-album deal with Jive. "...Baby One More Time" is a teen pop and dance-pop song that refers to a girl who regrets breaking up with her boyfriend. The song received generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised its composition.

"...Baby One More Time" attained global success, reaching number one in every country it charted. It also received numerous certifications around the world, and is one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 10 million copies sold.

The song was officially sent to the American radio stations on October 23, 1998. On November 21, 1998, "...Baby One More Time" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the chart two and a half months later for two consecutive weeks, replacing R&B-singer Brandy's "Have You Ever?". Simultaneously, it climbed to number-one on the Canadian Singles Chart. The song reached the top spot of the Hot 100 Singles Sales and stayed there for four consecutive weeks. This eventually propelled the single to a platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America. Though not as strong as its sales tallies, "...Baby One More Time" also experienced considerable airplay, becoming her first top ten hit on the Hot 100 Airplay, peaking at number eight The single also became an all-around hit on Top 40 radio, going top ten on both the Top 40 Tracks and Rhythmic Top 40, and to number one for five weeks on the Mainstream Top 40. It spent 32 weeks on the Hot 100 and ended up at number five on Billboard magazine's year-end chart. As of June 2012, "...Baby One More Time" has sold 1,412,000 physical singles, with 511,000 paid digital downloads in the United States.

THE NEW RADICALS - YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE (1999) hit #30
You Get What You Give" is a song by the New Radicals. It was an international hit, the first and most successful single from their album Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too. It reached No. 30 on Billboard Hot 100 Airplay in January 1999, No. 36 on the overall Hot 100 and No. 8 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. It reached No. 5 in the United Kingdom and No. 1 in Canada and New Zealand. It has been played over one million times on U.S. radio. This song appeared on the 1999 compilation album "Now That's What I Call Music! 2" and on the soundtrack album of the 2004 Warner Bros. Movie "Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed"

In a Time Magazine interview, U2 lead guitarist The Edge is quoted saying "You Get What You Give" is the song he is most "jealous of." "I really would love to have written that," he stated.   The song was listed No. 440 on Blender's list of The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born.

The song is an unofficial Newcastle United anthem and is regularly played at their home ground St James' Park. The song was used by local radio station Metro Radio during Newcastle's FA cup-run of 1998–99, with Mick Lowes' commentary of Newcastle's cup goals mixed over the song.     In the liner notes to her 2004 compilation Artist's Choice, Joni Mitchell praises "You Get What You Give" for "rising from the swamp of 'McMusic' like a flower of hope." Michelle Branch, Lulu, The Okay Feeling, and Martin Fry have covered this song live in concert. It was also performed by the Final 13 of Australian Idol 2005 & 2006. Both times the controversial "Health insurance..." section was omitted.

LMC released a remix of this song sampling the original Alexander vocals as "LMC vs. New Radicals" in 2005, under the title "Don't Let Go". Another remix entitled "You Get What You Give" was released in 2006, this time with a re-recorded vocal performance by Rachel McFarlane. "You Get What You Give" charted at No. 30 in the United Kingdom.    In 2006, Ice-T was asked on Late Night with Conan O'Brien about what he has heard, besides rap music, of late in the last few years that really grabbed him and his only reply was "You Get What You Give."

RICKY MARTIN - LIVIN' LA VIDA LOCA (1999) hit #1
Livin' la Vida Loca" (English: "Livin' the Crazy Life") is a song by Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin. It was released on March 23, 1999 from Martin's self-titled debut English album. The song was composed by Desmond Child and Draco Rosa and topped the charts during 1999. It received various Grammy Awards nominations and helped Ricky Martin obtain enormous success inside the United States and worldwide. In 2007, the song was ranked at number twenty-eight on the list of 100 Greatest Songs of the 90's by VH1. "Livin' la Vida Loca" is generally seen as the song that began the Latin pop explosion of 1999 and made the transition of other Latin artists (first Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias, then later Shakira) into the English-speaking market easier. Before this time, most non-Latino Americans had never heard of Ricky Martin until what CNN reported was a show-stopping performance of "La Copa de la Vida" at the 41st Grammy Awards show, which became a catalyst in bringing Latin pop to the forefront of the U.S. music scene.

This song was the first U.S. number one single to be recorded without using then-conventional recording studio equipment; instead the track was created in an entirely computerised environment using the Pro Tools software package. The recording is also noted for its exceptional use of dynamic range compression to increase the track's perceived loudness.

"Livin' la Vida Loca" is Ricky Martin's biggest hit. It is his first number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining at number one in the United States for five consecutive weeks and ranking at number ten on the year-end chart of 1999. The single was certified Platinum for sales over one million physical copies in the US alone. It topped the Hot Latin Songs for nine weeks, and Latin Pop Songs for ten weeks. Although released long before the digital era, it has sold 502,000 digital copies in the US, becoming Martin's best-selling downloaded track. On the Canadian RPM Top Singles the song stayed at the top for eight weeks, and on the Canadian Singles Chart for three weeks.  In the United Kingdom, "Livin' la Vida Loca" debuted at number one and stayed there for three weeks. It has sold 832,000 copies and was certified Platinum. The song also reached number one in Ireland and New Zealand. "Livin' la Vida Loca" peaked inside top ten around the world and was certified Platinum, Gold and Silver in various countries.   "Livin' la Vida Loca" was nominated at the 42nd Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). The Spanish version of the song was also nominated for Record of the Year at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2000.

THE DIXIE CHICKS - YOU WERE MINE (1998)

Album: Wide Open Spaces (1998)

March 13th 1999 - my #1 favorite current top 40 hit for 3 weeks

April 29th 1999 - my #2 favorite daily song for 53 days at age 18 while on the road performing.

The Dixie Chicks are an American country music band which has also successfully crossed over into other genres. The band is composed of founding members (and sisters) Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Robison, and lead singer Natalie Maines. The band formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas and was originally composed of four women performing bluegrass and country music, busking and touring the bluegrass festival circuits and small venues for six years without attracting a major label. After the departure of one bandmate, the replacement of their lead singer, and a slight change in their repertoire, the Dixie Chicks soon achieved commercial success, beginning in 1998 with hit songs "There's Your Trouble" and "Wide Open Spaces

"You Were Mine" is a hit song by the Dixie Chicks, from their 1998 album Wide Open Spaces. It was released in December 1998, and hit number one on the U.S. Country singles chart, spending two weeks there in March 1999. It also placed 34th on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop singles chart, and reached third place on Canada's country music chart.

  DIAMOND RIO - UNBELIEVABLE (1998)

Album: Unbelievable (1998)

March 20th 1999 - my #6 favorite daily song for 40 days at age 28 while on the road playing country for a living.

Unbelievable" is the title of a single, released in late 1998, by American country music band Diamond Rio. It was the second single from their fifth studio album, also titled Unbelievable.

The song was Diamond Rio's twenty-first single on the country music charts, and their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.

Deborah Evans Price, of Billboard magazine reviewed the song favorably saying that the lyric is fun and the track "sparkles with the band's musicianship, from the frisky piano to the infectious guitar work." She also says that "one has to admire lead vocalist Marty Roe's ability to deliver the rapid-fire chorus without missing a syllable.

"Unbelievable" debuted at #51 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks for the week of October 31, 1998 The song peaked at #2 country and #36 pop in the USA

JESSICA SIMPSON - I WANNA LOVE YOU FOREVER (1999) hit #3
I Wanna Love You Forever" is the first single from Jessica Simpson's debut album Sweet Kisses. The song is her debut single and was released in 1999, the single peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Simpson's first, and to date last, top ten single. The song also peaked at number seven in the United Kingdom. The single is generally considered to be one of her signature songs, and is her most successful single in the United States to date.

"I Wanna Love You Forever" was written, composed, and produced by Louis Biancaniello and Sam Watters. The track is a darkly bittersweet love ballad, showing off the powerful vocals of Simpson. Even though Biancaniello and Watters are credited jointly for writing and composing the song, at present, it is not known exactly which of the two wrote its lyrics and which composed its music. According to the sheet music book published by Hal Leonard Corporation in Musicnotes.com, "I Wanna Love You Forever" is a common time signature song, with a beat rate of 132 beats per minute. It is set in the key of B minor with Simpson's voice ranging from the tonal nodes of F3 to F5, which is 2 octaves. The song follows a basic sequence of I–II–IV–II–VV progression.

The commercial single from I Wanna Love You Forever was released on the 28th of September, 1999 in the US. The song went straight to the top of the charts claiming the number one spot for six weeks on the Billboard US Single Sales Charts. The commercial release of the single also helped bring the single to the number three spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Charts. The commercial released contained the radio edit of the single and snippets from her forthcoming debut album, Sweet Kisses. I Wanna Love You Forever, is Jessica Simpson’s biggest commercial single to date, it went to sell over one million copies in the US alone.

As Simpson's debut single, there was obviously pressure for the song to do well. "I Wanna Love You Forever" did not disappoint, as it peaked within the top three of the Billboard Hot 100. Its commercial sales were particularly strong, and landed the single atop the Hot 100 Singles Sales for six weeks; this in turn earned the song a platinum certification.

BACKSTREET BOYS - I WANT IT THAT WAY (1999) hit #6
I Want It That Way" is a song by the Backstreet Boys, and their first single from their 1999 album Millennium. It was written by Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson along with other producers. The song was highly played on the radio and the video, directed by Wayne Isham, was well played on television. It was later released on the Backstreet Boys' greatest hits album, The Hits: Chapter One, in 2001.

The song is still routinely played on both radio and video and the single has been highly critically acclaimed, winning and being nominated for various awards including, three Grammy nominations, MTV awards and Billboard Awards, as well as many others. It reached number 1 in over 25 countries and became the most successful single from a 'boy band'.    The single broke the record for most radio station adds in its first week with 165. It reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts, where it stayed for ten non consecutive weeks. On the Billboard Top 40 Mainstream chart, it set a record for most weeks at number one. The single, however, failed to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking and then stalling out at number six for eight non-consecutive weeks. The song hit big in the United Kingdom, where it debuted at number one. "I Want It That Way" made chart history in the Netherlands being the first single ever to debut at number one in the Top 40, without being in the "Tip Parade" first.

The song also entered the charts at number one in Italy, Spain, Canada, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The song is also highly critically acclaimed. The song was voted number three on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '90s in December 2007, number ten in the MTV/Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Pop Songs Of All Time" in 2000. It was ranked number sixteen on Blender Magazine's 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born list and number sixty-one on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs Of The Past 25 Years in June 2003. It was ranked number one in MTV's Top 99 Of 99 special.

The song was also the 15th biggest selling boyband single of the 90's in the UK selling 423,300 copies. The video itself ranked as number three on the top 10 list of the most iconic videos of all time at the TRL finale.     SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER - THERE SHE GOES (1999) hit #32
There She Goes" is a song written by British singer/guitarist Lee Mavers and recorded first by Mavers' band, The La's.

In May 2007, the NME magazine placed the song at number 45 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever

Sixpence None the Richer released a cover version of the song in 1999 as the second single from their self-titled album, Sixpence None the Richer. The band's rendition of the song reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as the top 10 of Billboards Adult Top 40 chart.

This version of the song is featured in the opening sequence of the episode "The Opening" (season 3, episode 9) of HBO drama Six Feet Under, when a female character shuts herself in the garage in her activated car, while listening to the song on a cassette.

Sixpence None the Richer (also known as Sixpence) is an American rock/pop band that formed in New Braunfels, Texas, eventually settling in Nashville, Tennessee. They are best known for their songs "Kiss Me" and "Breathe Your Name" and their covers of "Don't Dream It's Over" and "There She Goes". The name of the band is inspired by a passage from the book Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis

In 1998, "Kiss Me" was released as a single, propelling Sixpence None the Richer into the national pop spotlight. That year the song was also featured in the film She's All That. In 2001 the film Not Another Teen Movie used the song in a parody.

In 1999, the band recorded a cover of The La's' "There She Goes", which became their second hit single and propelled them into the limelight again. Sixpence appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and numerous morning talk shows. "There She Goes" was added to subsequent pressings of the self-titled album.

BACKSTREET BOYS - LARGER THAN LIFE (1999) hit #25
Larger than Life" is a song by the Backstreet Boys, released as the second single from their 1999 album, Millennium. It was written by Max Martin, Kristian Lundin and Brian Littrell and is mainly a tribute to the group's fans. The song broke the record for longest running #1 on MTV's Total Request Live. The song reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the UK Singles Chart. Blender listed it at #292 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born. It is one of the most popular songs performed by the group. This became a track on the American 2000 compilation album Now That's What I Call Music! 4.

"Larger Than Life" was originally written and composed sometime in 1998 by group member, Brian Littrell. When the group traveled to Sweden in early November 1998 to record at Cheiron Studios, alterations and additions were later made to the lyrics by the producers Max Martin and Kristian Lundin. "Larger Than Life" was initially registered and copyrighted in December 1998 as an unfinished demo, not being released on Millennium preview snippets. Prior to February 1999, in order to traditionally follow up the template of releasing upbeat numbers as lead singles (i.e. "We've Got It Goin' On", "Everybody"), "Larger Than Life" was intended as the first single from the upcoming album. This was due to the group originally wanting to title the forthcoming album Larger Than Life. This changed upon hearing the completed version of "I Want It That Way" in a meeting with Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson in February 1999. Thus, plans were canceled and "Larger Than Life" was later released as the second single.

The video holds a Guinness World Record for the 12th most expensive music video with estimated production costs of over $2,100,000 USD. The single version differs from the album version with a more upbeat percussion track and two versions: original and remix (with no guitar solo).

Lead singer Stephan Jenkins has said that the song "comes from a story our manager told us about a high school friend of his who was gay. He went to a conservative school in San Diego [with] all sons of military types. Being gay was just not acceptable. He offed himself--he jumped off a bridge." In other interview he restates: "it's about a friend who's gay, jumping off a bridge and killing themselves."

The song is also about Jenkins' own difficult, often alienating childhood experiences. He says, "My parents divorced, and that hurt me. We were poor and I went to a rich high school. I was dyslexic and had attention deficit disorder, which I still have. So I carried all these things with me. One afternoon, I had this epiphany. I said 'You know what? I don't have it all together. I come from stuff that was really difficult, and that's me. That's who I am.' I embraced that. There's a line in the song that says, 'Everyone's got to face down the demons/Maybe today we can put the past away.' It's very much a song about putting the past away

The songwriting duo of Stephan Jenkins and Kevin Cadogan signed the band's first major label recording contract with Elektra records in 1996 resulting in two multi platinum albums.
