EXPOSE - COME GO WITH ME (1987)
Album: Exposure (1987)
March 21st 1987 - my weekly #1 song for 6 straight weeks from the top
40.
I heard this song on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 and it quickly
became my favorite song so I rushed out and bought the cassette tape and
it was one of my most played albums of 1987. It was my #1 song of the
year from the top 40.
"Come Go with Me" is a single by the
freestyle
girl group
Exposé. The song was written by producer and group
founder
Lewis Martineé and appears on their 1987 debut album,
Exposure.
Jeanette Jurado sang the lead vocal on "Come Go with
Me". In 1985, Exposé had two dance club hits, "Point
of No Return" and "Exposed
to Love". Between 1985 and 1986, the three original
members of Exposé left the group and were replaced by
Jeanette Jurado,
Ann Curless and
Gioia Bruno. These new members re-recorded vocals on
"Point of No Return", and both songs were included on the
album. Although "Come Go with Me" was the first
single released from Exposure, the other two
songs were familiar to fans of the group and its music.
"Come Go with Me" became the group's first single to reach the
Billboard Hot 100 chart. It peaked at #5 in April 1987 and
remained in the
Top 40
for 12 weeks. On the Billboard
Hot Dance Club Play chart, the song spent two weeks at the summit in
January of that year, becoming their second song to achieve this feat
(following "Point of No Return"). The
12" single also reached #2 on the Billboard
Hot Dance Singles Sales chart
DEBBIE GIBSON - ONLY IN MY DREAMS (1987)
Album: Out Of The Blue (1987)
August 8th 1987 - my #1 favorite current top 40 hit for 4 weeks at
age 16 making it one of favorite song of 1987. It was my mothers 39th
birthday and it was the beginning of having a crush on Debbie Gibson for
the next 2 years as she became one of the top stars of the late 80's.
Starting in 1987 Tiffany and Debbie Gibson were the 2 female teen
stars that everyone including me had a crush on and I had posters of
both on my walls.
"Only in My Dreams" is the debut
single for American
singer-songwriter-actress
Deborah Gibson. Released December 16. 1986
as a maxi single (Atlantic
DM 86744), and then in remixed form (Vocal/3:50,
as described herein) February 1987, the song was
written by Gibson herself in 1984, two years
before she recorded it. Produced by
Fred Zarr and engineered by Don Feinberg for
BiZarr Music, Inc., mixed by
"Little" Louie Vega and mastered by
Herb "Pump" Powers, the dance-pop song
reached number four on the U.S.
Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the
summer of 1987.
Douglas Breitbart for Broadbeard
Productions, Inc. served as executive producer.
Dreams re-entered the UK singles chart in
1988 on the back of the success of her second
single (viz., "Shake
Your Love," Atlantic UK A9187), eventually
peaking at #11.
Deborah Ann "Debbie" Gibson (born August 31, 1970) is an
American
singer-songwriter,
record producer, and actress. In 1988 she was pronounced the
youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a #1 single on the
Billboard Hot 100, with her song "Foolish
Beat" and she remains the youngest female to write, record, and
perform a #1 single She has gone on to starring roles on
Broadway and touring musicals, as well as
independent film and television work.
WORLD PARTY - SHIP OF FOOLS (1987)
Album: Private Revolution
(1986)
This alternative rock song entered the Top 40 in 1987 and I was
hooked and landed up buying this album and their next one. This is a
powerful song and a great arrangement and anthem.
It was my #2 favorite song on May 2nd 1987 on the weekly top 40.
"Ship of Fools" (subtitled "Save Me from Tomorrow")
is a
rock song performed by
World Party. It was written and produced by singer and
multi-instrumentalist
Karl Wallinger, formerly of
The Waterboys. Wallinger is the sole member of World
Party. "Ship of Fools" was the first single released by
World Party and was included on the 1986 debut album
Private Revolution. It was World Party's sole
Billboard Top 40 single, debuting on that chart on
April 4, 1987 and peaking at number 27. It also reached no.
42 on the UK singles chart and no. 5 on the Billboard
Mainstream Rock chart. The song has also been included
on over a dozen compilations, including
Greenpeace's Rainbow Warriors compilation
The single reached the
number four position in the UK in 1986, and rose to number
six pop and number one adult contemporary in the U.S. in
1987.
The song also resulted in a
Grammy Award nomination for
Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
The single was written and performed while the group was
still a trio. It was one of their biggest hits, and the song
most closely associated with the act. In the U.S.,
"Breakout" remains a staple of
adult contemporary and
smooth jazz radio station playlists.
The music video for "Breakout" features lead singer
Corinne Drewery as a fashion designer, who with the
assistance of the other two band members designs and makes
her own dress, and later makes a successful debut modelling
it. It was directed by
Nick Willing.
Swing Out Sister are a British
sophisti-pop group best known worldwide for their 1986
song "Breakout".
Other hits include "Surrender",
"Twilight
World", "Waiting Game" and a remake of "Am
I the Same Girl?" Though album sales in the U.S. and
Europe have levelled off since the early 1990s, the group
continues to attract a loyal fanbase. The group is also very
popular in Japan.
MIAMI SOUND MACHINE - FALLING IN LOVE (1987) hit #25
Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo García de Estefan, known
professionally as Gloria Estefan (born September 1, 1957) is a
Cuban-born
American singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur. Known as the
"Queen Of Latin Pop", she is in the top 100
best selling music artists with over 100 million albums sold
worldwide, 31.5 million of those in the United States alone. She has won
three
Grammy Awards, and 4
Latin Grammys, and is the most successful
crossover performer in Latin music to date.
Starting in 1977, the Miami Sound Machine, (the Miami Latin Boys with
Gloria Estefan), began recording and releasing various albums, 45s, and
12"s on the Audiofon Records label in Miami. The first album from 1977
was entitled Live Again Renacer and was released with two
different covers. After several more releases on the Audiofon label as
well as the RCA Victor label and Miami Sound Machine's own label MSM
Records, the band was signed to Discos CBS International and released
several albums, 45s, and 12"s beginning with 1980s self-titled album
Miami Sound Machine. Growing in popularity in both the United States
and around the world, the group would continue recording and issuing
various works for Discos CBS International through 1985. In 1984, Miami
Sound Machine released their first Epic/Columbia album,
Eyes of Innocence, which contained the dance hit "Dr.
Beat" as well as the ballad "I
Need Your Love". Their more successful follow-up album
Primitive Love was released in 1985 launching three Top 10 hits
on the
Billboard Hot 100: "Conga"
(U.S. #10), "Words
Get In The Way" (U.S. #5), and "Bad
Boy" (U.S. #8) became follow up hits in the U.S. and around the
world. "Words
Get in the Way" reached #1 on the US
Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, establishing that the group
could perform pop ballads as successfully as dance tunes. The song "Hot
Summer Nights" was also released that year and was part of the film Top Gun.
YES - LOVE WILL FIND A WAY (1987) hit #30
Album: Big Generator (1987)
I discovered Yes in
1984 with their hit Owner Of A Lonely Heart but it was their 2nd new
single Leave It that had my intrigued. I bought the album new at a
Mac's Convenience store in about May 1984 on Ruth Street and they had a
record promotion and also had a Yes plastic drink cup I got as well.
Over the next 7 months I would buy every Yes album. So I learned their first 15
years of material all in 1984 just as I was entering high school. Yes would quickly become my
2nd favorite band of all time. I saw Bill Bruford live in
concert in 1992 and chatted with him for a moment. My wife bought
tickets to see Yes in 2008 in Toronto but the concert was cancelled due
to Jon Anderson's vocal problems. We flew to New York in 2011 to
see Jon Anderson solo in concert. Members of Yes are my favorite
musicians ever including Rick Wakeman, Trevor Rabin, Steve Howe and
Chris Squire.
Love Will Find a Way" is a song by the
progressive rock band
Yes, from their 1987 album
Big Generator. It was released as the first single
from that album, reaching number 30 on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart in late 1987. It also
topped the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart, holding onto the
number one spot for three weeks. Yes guitarist and singer
Trevor Rabin originally wrote the song for singer
Stevie Nicks to perform; however, Yes drummer
Alan White encouraged Rabin to let Yes record the song
instead, which they did. "Love Will Find a Way" was the fifth of six Yes singles
to crack the U.S. Top 40; it has been featured on several of
Yes' later compilations, including the box sets
Yesyears and
In a Word: Yes (1969–). A video for the song is also
included on Yes'
Greatest Video Hits.
Yes are an English rock band who achieved worldwide
success with their
progressive,
art, and
symphonic style of rock music. Regarded as one of the
pioneers of the progressive genre, Yes are known for their
lengthy songs, mystical lyrics, elaborate
album art, and live stage sets. Seventeen musicians have
been a part of the band's line-up, with its current form
comprising singer
Jon Davison, bassist
Chris Squire, guitarist
Steve Howe, drummer
Alan White, and keyboardist
Geoff Downes. Yes have sold 13.5 million certified units
in the United States.
WHITNEY HOUSTON - DIDN'T WE ALMOST HAVE IT ALL (1987) hit #1
Didn't We Almost Have It All" is the second single
from
Whitney Houston's second album
Whitney. The song was written by
Michael Masser and
Will Jennings and was released in August 1987. It
received a
Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. Originally,
another song was to be released as the second single, "For
the Love of You", but Arista Records decided to release
"Didn't We Almost Have It All" instead because all Houston's
singles had to be original material at this point of her
career.
"Didn't We Almost Have It All" reached number one on the
Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, from September 26 to
October 3, 1987, where the song became her fifth consecutive
number one. The song also topped both component charts, the
Hot 100 Singles Sales and
Hot 100 Airplay, Houston's fourth song (and fourth
consecutive release) to do so.
The single stayed in the Top 40 for 13 weeks, and topped
the Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts for three weeks. Internationally, the song hit the top ten in several
markets, and reached the top 20 in the
United Kingdom (#14);
Switzerland (#18); and
Germany (#20).
"Didn't We Almost Have It All" was ranked 22nd on the
Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts (1987), and remained in
the Billboard Hot 100 for 17 weeks. It was her fifth number
one single on the Billboard Hot 100, her fourth on the
Billboard Hot 100 Singles Sales, her fourth on the Billboard
Hot 100 Airplay, and her fifth on the Billboard Adult
Contemporary Charts.
TIFFANY - I THINK WE'RE ALONE NOW (1987) hit #1
I Think We're
Alone Now" is a song written by Ritchie Cordell. It was initially a
1967 hit for the
American recording artists
Tommy James & the Shondells, reaching #4 on the
Billboard Hot 100. The song has since been covered several times by
other artists. In 1987, a version of the song by
Tiffany reached #1 on the charts of various countries including the
U.S., the UK, Canada, and New Zealand.
The song was re-popularized when American singer Tiffany
covered the song for her first album
Tiffany (1987). Tiffany's version of the song spent
two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and was unusually
followed on the top spot by another Tommy James & the
Shondells cover, "Mony Mony" by
Billy Idol) and three weeks at #1 on the
UK Singles Chart. The video was shot in a shopping mall
which echoed the way her early career had been promoted.
Elements of the video were filmed in the now demolished
Bullring Centre in
Birmingham,
UK.
When
George Tobin, Tiffany's manager, gave Tiffany the
cassette of the original version by Tommy James & the
Shondells, Tiffany hated the idea of recording a version of
her own for her album mostly because she thought the song
wasn't modern or hip enough. It turned out to be her biggest
hit once she recorded it.
"I Think We're Alone Now" was not the first single from
Tiffany's debut album. The first single was "Danny",
but radio started picking up "I Think We're Alone Now",
another track on the album. It became a runaway #1 hit and
was the eighteenth highest selling single for 1987 and the
thirty-second highest selling single in Australia for 1988.
This version is referenced in the alternative group
Weezer's song "Heart Songs" on the band's 2008 Red
Album, but in the song it is mentioned that it was sung
by
Debbie Gibson, another teen idol who was around at the
same time as Tiffany. When
Rivers Cuomo wrote the song, he had noticed the
oversight on his part and that he knew that the song was
recorded by Tiffany, but he left the part in the song where
he mentions Debbie Gibson singing the song. A
2008 documentary focusing on two fans obsessed with Tiffany
was named after the song.
HEART - ALONE (1987) hit #1
Alone" is a
song composed by
Billy Steinberg and
Tom Kelly. It first appeared on via Steinberg and
Kelly's pet project, 1983's I-Ten, Taking a Cold Look.
It was later recorded by
John Stamos in his role as Gino Minelli, on the original
soundtrack of the
CBS
sitcom
Dreams in 1984. American
rock band
Heart made it a number one US and Canadian hit in 1987.
Twenty years later,
Céline Dion recorded it for her album
Taking Chances.
The song was given to
Heart and released as the first single from their ninth
studio album
Bad Animals in May 1987. Heart's version is a
power ballad that begins with a piano line and a subdued
vocal from
Ann Wilson before exploding into an amplified hard rock
chorus. The song has been covered numerous times on
American Idol as well as by artists such as
Celine Dion, but is viewed as being exceptionally
difficult to cover because of Ms. Wilson's legendary
performance. According to a Songfacts interview with
Steinberg, Kelly (an experienced session singer) provided
the high harmony parts on the record "Alone" is Heart's
biggest hit, spending three weeks at number 1 on the U.S.
Billboard Hot 100 that July. It ranked number 2 on the
Billboard Year-End Top Pop Singles of 1987. It is
also their most successful single in the United Kingdom,
where it peaked at number 3 on the
UK Singles Chart. The song's popular video featured the
band in a synched live performance. An "unplugged" version
of the song later appeared on Heart's 1995 album The Road
Home.
Heart is an American
rock band who first found success in Canada, later also
in the United States and worldwide. Over the group's four
decade history, the band has had three primary lineups, with
the constant members being lead singer
Ann Wilson and guitarist
Nancy Wilson. Heart rose to fame in the mid 1970s with
music influenced by
hard rock and
heavy metal as well as
folk music. Their popularity declined in the early
1980s, but the band enjoyed a comeback starting in 1985 and
experienced even greater success with AOR hits and hard rock
ballads into the 1990s.
EXPOSE - POINT OF NO RETURN (1987) hit #5
Point of No Return" is a
single by the female
dance-pop trio
Exposé. Written and produced by
Lewis Martineé, the single was originally released in
1985 with Alejandra Lorenzo (Alé) as the lead singer. The
single was re-recorded in 1987 with
Jeanette Jurado as the lead vocalist and included on the
group's debut album,
Exposure.
The original vocal mix of the song, featuring Lorenzo,
reached the top of the Billboard
Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1985. The re-recorded vocal
version with Jurado reached #5 on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1987. The
music video for "Point of No Return" features Exposé
performing in front of an audience.
In February 1987, the new lineup of
Exposé released its debut album,
Exposure, on Arista Records.
Notably, unlike many classic
girl groups, Exposé alternated
lead vocals among its members.
Led
by the huge
pop/dance
hit "Come
Go with Me", which reached #5 on
the
Billboard Hot 100 chart,
the group solidified its freestyle
music connection. During the summer
of 1987, a re-recorded version of
"Point of No Return" was released,
with Jurado performing lead vocals,
and it too topped out at #5 on the
Hot 100. While the initial
distribution of Exposure to
suppliers contained the original
1984 version of that song,
subsequent pressings contained the
new vocal version; this has led to
the original pressings of the album
being considered a
collector's item. "Let
Me Be the One", a mid-tempo R&B
track with Bruno on lead vocal,
garnered significant
R&B support and reached #7 on
the Hot 100. The group's biggest hit
occurred in February 1988 with the
#1 Hot 100 single, "Seasons
Change". Along with that came a
Soul Train Award nomination for Best
New Artist; television
appearances on
American Bandstand,
Solid Gold,
Showtime at the Apollo, and
The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers;
and the group was tapped to be the
opening act for
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam during
its national tour. Exposure
remains one of the most successful
dance albums ever released, reaching
triple platinum status.
THE BANGLES - WALKING DOWN THE STREET (1987) hit
Walking Down Your Street" is the name of a song by
The Bangles. It is the fourth and final single from
their album
Different Light. It was released as a single in 1987
and charted at #11 on the
Billboard Hot 100 and #16 on the
UK Singles Chart, top 40 hits in both charts. The next
single, "Following",
was only released in the UK, making "Walking Down Your
Street" the last single from
Different Light in the US. The original LP version
varies slightly from the 7" single version and the version
included with their Greatest Hits compilation.
The Bangles' full-length debut album on Columbia,
All Over the Place (1984), captured their power-pop
roots, featuring the singles "Hero Takes a Fall" and the
Kimberley Rew-penned Beatlesque "Going
Down to Liverpool" (originally recorded by Rew's band
Katrina and the Waves). The record received good
reviews, and the video for "Liverpool" featured
Leonard Nimoy, which helped to generate further
publicity. This came about due to a college friendship
between Hoffs and Nimoy's son
Adam, now a television producer. They received a much
wider audience serving as the opening act of
Cyndi Lauper on her Fun tour.
All this went some way to attracting the attention of
Prince, who later wrote "Manic
Monday" for the group. "Manic Monday" went on to become
a No. 2 hit in the US, the UK and Germany, outsold at the
time only by another
Prince composition, his own "Kiss".
The band's second album
Different Light (1986) was more polished than its
predecessor and, with the help of the worldwide No. 1 hit "Walk
Like an Egyptian", saw the band firmly in the
mainstream. The song was sent to them in mid-session and the
group was divided about whether it would be a failure or a
success. When the song was released the group was amazed to
discover that it brought them a new audience of female fans,
most of them very young. Commented Michael Steele to a
Nine-O-One Network Magazine writer: "When I go out now
it is usually girls who recognize me.
WHITNEY HOUSTON - I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (1987) hit #1
"I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" was released
as the first single from Houston's second studio album, in
April 1987. It entered the
Billboard Hot 100, the issue dated May 16, 1987,
at number 38, her highest debut in 1980s.
Six weeks later, it reached the top spot of the chart,
making it Houston's fourth number-one single in the United
States, the issue date of June 27, 1987 ― the same day that
Houston's album Whitney debuted at number one on the
Billboard 200 the
first time ever by a female artist.
It remained there for two weeks, and spent 18 weeks on the
chart.
The song reached number one on the
Hot 100 Single Sales chart for two weeks, and on the
Hot 100 Airplay chart for three weeks, her longest run
at that time. The single also peaked at number one on the
Hot Adult Contemporary and the 12" remixed dance / club
version by
John "Jellybean" Benitez became Houston's first
chart-topper on the
Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play Songs, staying on
the top position of the charts for three weeks and two
weeks, respectively.
In addition, it reached a peak of two on the
Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart (formerly
"Hot Black Singles"), the issue date of July 4, 1987.
On July 28, 1987, the single was certified
Gold by the
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for
shipment of 1,000,000 copies of the single, becoming one of
only three singles to reach that level in that year, and
re-certified
Platinum, making it Houston's first single to achieve
that feat, for the same shipment on February 13, 1989, with
the change of the RIAA certification criteria for singles.
(The number of sales required to qualify for gold and
platinum discs was higher prior to January 1, 1989. The
thresholds were 1,000,000 units (gold) and 2,000,000 units
(platinum), reflecting a decrease in sales of singles.)
It placed at number four on the
Billboard Year-End Top Pop Singles chart for
1987.
In Canada, the song debuted at 74 on the
RPM Top 100 Singles chart, the issue dated May 9,
1987,and reached the top of the chart on July 4, 1987.
It was ranked second on the RPM Year-End Top 100
Singles chart for 1987.
The single was later certified Platinum by the
Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) on
February 29, 1988.
DEBBIE GIBSON - SHAKE YOUR LOVE (1987)
Album: Out Of The Blue (1987)
November 14th 1987 - my #1 favorite current top 40 hit for 3 weeks at
age 16 making it one of favorite song of 1987.
November 10th 1987 - my #1 favorite song for 5 days at age 16 in
Grade 12 at Nutana. I had just bought the cassette tape and along with
Whitney Houston she was my favorite pop star at that time.
Starting in 1987 Tiffany and Debbie Gibson were the 2 female teen
stars that everyone including me had a crush on and I had posters of
both on my walls.
"Shake Your Love" (Atlantic
89187, Atlantic UK A9187) is the second
single by
American
singer-songwriter-actress
Deborah Gibson, and the leadoff single for her album
Out of the Blue (LP 81780). Originally recorded in
the spring of 1987 for the Dream Tour, the song is
written by Gibson herself and produced by
Fred Zarr and engineered by Don Feinberg for BiZarr
Music, Inc., with
Douglas Breitbart as executive producer It reached
number four on the U.S.
Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in December 1987 and was
her breakthrough single in the U.K., reaching number seven
in early 1988. Both tracks on the
U.S.-specification single also appeared among the six
total tracks of the simultaneously released maxi-single (Atlantic
DM 86651), which reached number one on the
Billboard
Hot Maxi-Singles chart.
The
music video to support this single, eventually included
on Gibson's video album
Out of the Blue (Atlantic VHS 50123) was set on a
facsimile of a drive-in movie theater lot and choreographed
by
Paula Abdul.
Deborah Ann "Debbie" Gibson (born August 31, 1970) is an
American
singer-songwriter,
record producer, and actress. In 1988 she was pronounced the
youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a #1 single on the
Billboard Hot 100, with her song "Foolish
Beat" and she remains the youngest female to write, record, and
perform a #1 single She has gone on to starring roles on
Broadway and touring musicals, as well as
independent film and television work.
Released as a
single in August 1987, "Let Me Be the One" became the
group's third consecutive top ten single on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart in October of that year,
when it peaked at #7. The song also reached #2 on the
Billboard
Hot Dance Club Play chart. In the
United Kingdom, the song reached #76 on the
British pop chart.
Led by the huge
pop/dance
hit "Come
Go with Me", which reached #5 on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart, the group
solidified its freestyle music connection.
During the summer of 1987, a re-recorded version
of "Point of No Return" was released, with
Jurado performing lead vocals, and it too topped
out at #5 on the Hot 100. While the initial
distribution of Exposure to suppliers
contained the original 1984 version of that
song, subsequent pressings contained the new
vocal version; this has led to the original
pressings of the album being considered a
collector's item "Let
Me Be the One", a mid-tempo R&B track with
Bruno on lead vocal, garnered significant
R&B support and reached #7 on the Hot 100.
The group's biggest hit occurred in February
1988 with the #1 Hot 100 single, "Seasons
Change". Along with that came a
Soul Train Award nomination for Best New Artist;
television appearances on American Bandstand,
Solid Gold,
Showtime at the Apollo, and
The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers; and
the group was tapped to be the opening act for
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam during its national
tour. Exposure remains one of the most
successful dance albums ever released, reaching
triple platinum status.
During the group's peak, Exposé endured legal
issues behind the scenes. Similar to the girl
groups of the 1960s, the members of Exposé had a
restrictive contract, and there were reports in
the media of backstage battles. According to
Bruno, they were only paid $200 (US) per show.
Reportedly, the record label intervened to keep
peace between the members and the producers.
Despite this intervention, the members filed a
lawsuit and ultimately settled their legal case
for a renegotiated contract
William "Smokey"
Robinson, Jr. (born February 19, 1940) is an American
R&B singer-songwriter, record producer, and former
record executive. Robinson is most notable for being the
founder and front man of the popular
Motown vocal group,
The Miracles, for which he also served as the group's
chief songwriter and producer. Robinson led the group from
its 1955 origins as The Five Chimes until 1972 when
he announced a
retirement from the stage to focus on his role as
Motown's
vice president.
In 1987, following a period of personal and professional issues,
Robinson made a comeback with the album,
One Heartbeat and the singles, "Just
to See Her" and "One
Heartbeat", which both peaked at the top ten, with "Just to See Her"
winning Robinson his first
Grammy Award in 1988. The album became Robinson's most successful to
date, selling half a million copies. In the same year Robinson released
One Heartbeat, he was inducted as a solo artist to the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, later igniting controversy as the
committee had only inducted Robinson but not members of his group, the
Miracles, which Robinson himself was personally offended by. In 2012,
however, the committee ratified that mistake announcing that the group
would be inducted on their own merit. Though Robinson was not listed as
an inductee, the musician is due to induct his former group at the
ceremony in April 2012. The same year he was inducted, the UK group,
ABC
released a tribute song, "When
Smokey Sings".
STEVE WINWOOD - VALERIE (1987) hit #9
Valerie" is the title of a song written by
Steve Winwood and
Will Jennings and originally recorded by Winwood for his
third solo album
Talking Back to the Night, in 1982. The song deals
with a man reminiscing about a lost love he hopes to find
again someday. On its original release, the single reached
number 51 on the UK Singles Chart and number 70 on the U.S.
Billboard Hot 100.
In 1987, a
remix by
Tom Lord-Alge was included on Winwood's compilation
album
Chronicles. The remixed version of "Valerie" was
released as a single and climbed to number 9 in the US
Billboard Hot 100 in late December 1987, and also
reached number 19 in the
UK.
Eric Prydz
sampled the song in 2004 for a
house music track and presented it to Winwood. Winwood
was so impressed with what Prydz had done, he re-recorded
the vocals to better fit the track. The 2004 remix was
released under the title "Call
on Me". Will Jennings wrote lyrics thinking about
Valerie Carter, singer songwriter, whose career was
declining because of drugs.
In 2005, Winwood was honoured as a
BMI Icon at the annual BMI London Awards for
his "enduring influence on generations of music
makers." In 2008,
Rolling Stone magazine ranked Winwood
#33 in its 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
Winwood has won numerous
Grammy Awards in the United States.
CROWDED HOUSE - DON'T DREAM ITS OVER (1987) hit #2
In May 2001,
Australasian Performing Rights Association (Apra)
celebrated its 75th anniversary by naming the
best New Zealand and
best Australian songs of all time, as decided by Apra
members and an industry panel. "Don't Dream It's Over" was
ranked second on the New Zealand list and seventh on the
Australian list. While the Australian listing was considered
controversial in New Zealand, it was noted that the band
drew members from New Zealand, Australia and America and was
formed in Melbourne.
The music video, which features some
surreal special effects such as household objects –
including shattering crockery – and film reels that float in
the air, shows lead singer Neil Finn playing a guitar and
walking through the same house during different time periods
while his bandmates are either performing household chores
or playing various backing instruments. It was nominated for
Best Group Video, and Best Direction at the 1987
MTV Video Music Awards, and earned the group a Best New
Artist award
Originally active from
1985 to 1996, the band has had consistent commercial and
critical success in Australia and New Zealand and
international chart success in two phases, beginning with
their self titled debut album,
Crowded House, which reached number twelve on the
US Album Chart in 1987 and provided the Top Ten hits, "Don't
Dream It's Over" and "Something
So Strong".
Queen Elizabeth II bestowed an
OBE on both Neil and Tim Finn, in June 1993, for their
contribution to the music of New Zealand
WHITESNAKE - HERE I GO AGAIN (1987) hit #1
Here I Go Again" is a #1 hit song recorded by
Whitesnake. Originally released on their 1982 album,
Saints & Sinners, the song was re-recorded for their
eponymous 1987 album
Whitesnake. The song was re-recorded yet another
time that year in a new "radio-mix" version. The 1987 album
version hit number one on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 10, 1987, and number
nine on the
UK Singles Chart on November 28, 1987. The 1987 version
also hit number one on the
Canadian Singles Chart on October 24, 1987. In 2006, the
1987 version was named the 17th Greatest Song of the 1980s
by
VH1.
The song was written by lead singer,
David Coverdale, and former Whitesnake guitarist,
Bernie Marsden. The most notable differences between the
original and revamped version are the style of the music
(blues-rock versus hard rock) and a slight change in the
lyrics. The chorus of the original version features the
lines:
"An' here I go again on my own
Goin' down the only road I've ever known
Like a hobo I was born to walk alone"
In an interview, Coverdale claimed he changed the lyric
because he was afraid people would think he was saying
"homo" instead of "hobo".
The
music video for the song was directed by
Marty Callner, who directed most of Whitesnake's videos
in the 1980s. It became memorable due to actress
Tawny Kitaen's appearance wearing white lingerie. In the
video she is seen prancing on the hood of Whitesnake lead
singer
David Coverdale's
Jaguar XJ and massaging him while he is trying in vain
to concentrate on driving. Kitaen would later become
Coverdale's wife for a brief period.
BILLY VERA & THE BEATERS - AT THIS MOMENT (1987) hit #1
At This Moment" is a song that was first recorded by
Billy Vera & The Beaters in 1981 during a string of
performances at the
Roxy in
West Hollywood (January 15–17) and featured on their
self-titled live album, Billy and the Beaters,
released that same year.
When it was originally released
as a single, as the follow-up to the album's first single,
"I Can Take Care of Myself" (which had become the band's
first
Billboard Top 40 hit), "At this Moment" stalled on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart at #79 at the end of 1981. When
the song was included on several episodes of the
NBC
sitcom
Family Ties during the 1985-86 season as the love
song associated with
Alex P. Keaton (played by
Michael J. Fox) and his girlfriend Ellen Reed (played by
Tracy Pollan, whom Fox eventually married in real life),
the exposure renewed interest in the song. Reissue label
Rhino
Entertainment purchased the track from the band's
original record label,
Alfa (which was by then inactive), and re-released it in
its original version. The tune then began a revived chart
run, eventually hitting #1 on both the
Billboard Hot 100 and
Adult Contemporary charts in January 1987. It quickly
sold over a million copies in the United States, becoming
one of the last Gold-certified singles in the 45 RPM format.
The song crossed over to the R&B and Country formats,
reaching #40 on the
Country Singles chart.
In an interview with Rachael Ray in 2007, Michael J. Fox
good-naturedly said, "Tracy and I couldn't get on the dance
floor anywhere in the world for like ten years without them
playing 'What would you think...' " (These are the opening
words of "At This Moment.")
A
cover version was recorded by country music singer
Neal McCoy on his 1990 debut album, also titled
At This Moment. McCoy's version was released as a
single, but did not chart. Another cover version of the song
appears on
Michael Bublé's 2009 album,
Crazy Love.
THE OTHER ONES - HOLIDAY (1987) hit #29
September 15th 1987 - my
#9 favorite daily song for 8 days at age 16 in Grade 12.
October 31st 1987 - my #4 favorite weekly song in the Top 40 on
Billboard for 1 week
After traveling throughout the world in the late 1970s as a
puppeteer and then a singer, Alf went back home to
Melbourne, Australia to collaborate with his younger
brother Johnny in a more musical direction. Together they
returned to Berlin, West Germany in late 1983 and along with
Johnny's twin sister Jayney (who had been in a band back in
Australia as well) created the musical group "The Other
Ones," enlisting three local Berlin musicians,
guitarist Andreas Schwarz-Ruszczynski,
keyboardist Stephan Gottwald and
drummer Uwe Hoffmann.
Their self-titled album was released in late 1986. Their
first single "We
Are What We Are" peaked at #53 on May 30, 1987 and their
song "Holiday"
entered the
Billboard Hot 100 chart at #29 on October 17, 1987.
Music videos for the two songs were also released.
(The song "Holiday" was remixed and re-released as "Another
Holiday" in 1991.)
