MARY J. BLIGE - REAL LOVE (1992)
Album: What's The 411 (1992)
Not only did I always listen to old classic records but I always
stayed totally caught up on all the latest Top 40 hits and I always
liked a catchy song by great female voice. This song had the catchy hook
chorus but the groove was so infectious.
November 26 1992 it became my #1 favorite song. At the time it broke
records as it was the longest any song had ever stayed as my #1 favorite
song which at that time was 32 days in a row. It was also my favorite
song in the top 40 for an amazing 12 weeks in a row which was unheard of
for me personally at that time. No song had been my favorite for that
long in almost a decade. All these records of hers would be beaten by
herself in 2006 when Be Without You spent lengthier runs at #1 on my
daily chart and on Top 40 song chart.
"Real Love" was her first top-ten
pop hit, peaking at number seven on the
Billboard Hot 100, and her second number one hit on
Billboard's
R&B singles chart. The remix featured the second
appearance of
rapper
The Notorious B.I.G., who was then going by the name
Biggie Smalls, and a sample of
Betty Wright's 1972 single, "Clean
Up Woman." The song eventually helped What's the 411?
sell more than three million copies in
America alone
Initially, TLC achieved commercial success
following the release of their debut album
Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip, which sold
four million copies worldwide. Their second
studio album,
CrazySexyCool, went on to be certified
diamond by the
RIAA, and eventually sold 22 million copies
worldwide. TLC released four multi-platinum
studio albums before going on hiatus due to the
death of Lopes in
Honduras in 2002.
PAULA ABDUL - VIBEOLOGY (1991) hit #16
Album: Spellbound (1991)
March 20th 1992 - my #1 favorite daily song for 11 days at age 11 in
3rd year University.
Great funky song with some really odd musical progressions which
makes the song exciting and weird at the same time.
"Vibeology" was the fourth single from
Paula Abdul's album
Spellbound, released in 1992. The Song was written by Peter
Lord;
Sandra St. Victor and V. Jeffrey Smith.
The single reached number 16 on the
Billboard Hot 100, becoming Abdul's first single not to make the Top
10 in the U.S. since the original release of "(It's
Just) The Way That You Love Me" in 1988. Nevertheless, it still
achieved considerable chart success, especially in the club charts where
the single became a huge smash hit for Paula. Outside the United States,
"Vibeology" performed very well, hitting #19 in the United Kingdom
helping the album "Spellbound" to re-enter the UK album chart's top 20.
It also achieved significant success throughout Europe and in Japan
(where it peaked at #3 on the international charts) and helped the
aforementioned album to rebound on the charts (as the 3 subsequent
singles to "Rush, Rush" failed to achieve considerable success outside
the United States). The single also achieved commercial success in
Canada hitting #3 there and remaining for 27 weeks on the charts.
JON SECADA - JUST ANOTHER DAY (1992) hit #5
Just Another Day" is the debut single released by
Jon Secada from his 1992 debut album
Jon Secada. Written by Jon Secada and Miguel Morejon,
the song reached No. 5 on the
Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the
Adult Contemporary chart.. It also peaked at No. 5 in
the UK.
In 1991, Secada legally changed his first name from Juan
to Jon. The following year, Secada released his self-titled
debut album
Jon Secada (SBK/EMI), which sold over six million
copies worldwide and being certified triple platinum in the
U.S., where it reached No. 15 among the
Billboard 200 albums chart.
Secada scored a No. 5 Pop hit (and a No. 5 UK hit) with
his Gold single "Just
Another Day", and three more top 30 hits, "Angel" (No.
18 Pop, No. 23 UK), "I'm Free" (No. 27 Pop, No. 50 UK), "Do
You Believe in Us?" (No. 13 Pop, No. 30 UK), and "Do You
Really Want Me" (No. 30 UK) received national radio play.
The Spanish-language version of Secada's solo album, Otro
Día Más Sin Verte (EMI-Latin), became the Number One
Latin album of 1992 and earned Secada his first
Grammy Award for "Best Latin Pop Album".
In 1994 by Secada's second album,
Heart, Soul & a Voice (EMI) featured members of The
Miami Sound Machine and guests
Arturo Sandoval (trumpeter) and Betty Wright (background
vocals). The album went Platinum in the US. One of its
singles had a top ten Pop hit "If
You Go" and a Top 30 hit "Mental Picture", which was
used in the soundtrack for the film "The
Specialist". His third album on EMI, Amor, was
released in 1995 and earned Secada his second Grammy for
"Best Latin Pop Performance".
METALLICA - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (1992)
hit #34
Nothing Else Matters" is a power-ballad by the
American
heavy metal band
Metallica. It was released as the third single from its
self-titled fifth studio album,
Metallica. The song peaked at number 11 on the
Billboard
Mainstream Rock Tracks chart as well as top-ten
positions on many European charts. "Nothing Else Matters"
was featured as a playable track in the music video game
Guitar Hero: Metallica. The song has been covered
over forty times.
Singer and rhythm guitarist
James Hetfield wrote the song (credited to Hetfield/Ulrich)
while he was on the phone with his then girlfriend. Since he
held the phone with one hand, he plucked the four open
strings of a standard E-minor chord with the other, which
eventually made up the first two bars of the song. The
lyrics, which talk about being "so close, no matter how
far", were also dedicated to his girlfriend, indicating the
bond they shared even when Hetfield was on tour. Initially,
the song was not meant to be released, as Hetfield had
written it for himself, but after drummer
Lars Ulrich heard it, it was considered for the album.
Its intro is an E minor
arpeggio beginning with the open low E followed by the
open G, B and high E strings.
It is one of the few Metallica songs in which Hetfield,
not
Kirk Hammett, plays the guitar solo. Given that Hetfield
recorded all rhythm and most harmony tracks on the band's
first five albums, Hammett does not play on the studio
recording, making it one of two songs in the whole Metallica
repertoire, along with
Cliff Burton's "(Anesthesia)
Pulling Teeth", in which he does not appear.
Metallica is an American
heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, whose
releases include fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive
musicianship that placed them as one of the founding "big
four" of
thrash metal alongside
Slayer,
Megadeth, and
Anthrax. They formed in 1981 when
James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that
drummer
Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. As of 2003,
the line-up features long-time lead guitarist
Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist
Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield
and Ulrich. Previous members of the band are lead guitarist
Dave Mustaine (who went on to found the band
Megadeth), and bassists
Ron McGovney,
Cliff Burton and
Jason Newsted.
"All I Want" was Toad the Wet Sprocket's
first successful song. It became one of their most
well-known songs and reached the top twenty on the Billboard
Hot 100.
Toad the Wet Sprocket is an
American
alternative rock band formed in 1986. The band consists
of vocalist and guitarist
Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean
Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss. The band enjoyed chart
success in the 1990s with the singles "Walk on the Ocean",
"All I Want", "Something's Always Wrong", and "Fall Down",
among others. The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other
projects but in 2006 began touring the
United States as a band in small-venue, short-run tours
each summer. In December 2010, the band announced their
official reunion as a full-time working band and have
started writing songs for their first new studio album since
their 1997
Columbia Records release
Coil
Toad the Wet Sprocket's first album was released
in 1989.
Bread & Circus was self-financed through
their label, Abe Records. The album spawned the
singles "Way Away" and "One Little Girl", which
made the
Billboard
Modern Rock Tracks chart, but received
little attention.
The follow-up to Bread &
Circus,
Pale, was released in 1990 and saw their
sound mature. During the recording of the album,
Toad signed to
Columbia Records while declining the
opportunity to re-record Pale, but
negotiating to have
Columbia Records reissue
Bread & Circus. Featuring the singles
"Jam" and the Modern Rock Chart hit "Come Back
Down", the album was still not a success; but
the singles received heavy airplay on college
radio stations and the band's first music video
(for "One Little Girl") was directed by
Mark Miremont and aired on
MTV's
120 Minutes.
In 1992, the cult classic
Buffy the Vampire Slayer featured the
song "Little Heaven" and was included in the
movie soundtrack.
TLC - WHAT ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS (1992) hit #7
What About Your Friends" is
TLC's third single from their debut album,
Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip. The single was
released in the fall of 1992. "What About Your Friends"
reached #7 on the
Billboard Hot 100 becoming the group's third top-ten
single.
"What About Your Friends" was written by Dallas
Austin and TLC-member Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes and features
lead vocals by T-Boz. Austin also produced the single. The
song is an
uptempo song about friends that will betray others and
knowing who your real
friends are. The remix features one of the first
appearances by
OutKast. You can hear this song in the show
My So-Called Life in the episode The Subsitute.
The video was shot in a big park where the girls are
being very happy, dancing and having fun with their friends
and some family members,
Jermaine Dupri makes a cameo appearance.
The song reached #7 on the
Billboard Hot 100, becoming the group's third
consecutive top ten single, while reaching #2 on Billboard's
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks.
The single was also certified gold by the
RIAA. It was not as successful in the
UK, "What About Your Friends" became TLC's second
consecutive single not to reach the top 40 singles in the
UK, peaking at #59.
Friday I'm in Love" is a song by British
rock band
The Cure. It is the second single taken from the album
Wish (1992), and is among the band's most well-known
songs. It won the award for European Viewer's Choice for
Best Music Video at the
1992 MTV Video Music Awards.
During the writing
process, Robert Smith became convinced that he had
inadvertently stolen the chord progression from somewhere,
and this led him to a state of paranoia where he called
everyone he could think of and played the song for them,
asking if they heard the song before. None of them had, and
Robert realized that the melody was indeed his.
The single was a number 6 hit in the UK and reached
number 18 on the
Billboard Hot 100. It is the band's last American
Top 40 hit to date. It was also the band's last song (in a
string of four) to top the Billboard
Modern Rock Tracks chart, matching the success of their
previous single, "High",
with a four-week stint at number 1.
The Cure are an English alternative
rock band formed in
Crawley,
West Sussex in 1976. The band has experienced several
line-up changes, with frontman, vocalist, guitarist and
principal songwriter
Robert Smith being the only constant member. The Cure
first began releasing music in the late 1970s with its debut
album
Three Imaginary Boys (1979); this, along with
several early singles, placed the band as part of the
post-punk and
New Wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the
punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom. During the
early 1980s, the band's increasingly dark and tormented
music helped form the
gothic rock genre
MARIAH CAREY - MAKE IT HAPPEN (1992) hit #5
Make It Happen" is a song by American
singer-songwriter
Mariah Carey. Written and produced by Carey and
C+C Music Factory's
David Cole and
Robert Clivillés, it was released on April 4, 1992, by
Columbia Records as the third single from her second
studio album,
Emotions (1991). Following its commercial release as
a single, "Make It Happen" was the subject of a US$500,000
copyright infringement lawsuit. The
pop-,
R&B-, and
dance-influenced track incorporates traces of
gospel in its
bridge and crescendo. Described by author Chris Nickson
as Carey's most personal and inspirational song (up until "Hero"),
it tells of her personal struggles prior to her rise to
fame, and how her faith in God helped sustain her.
The
song was praised by music critics, many of whom applauded
Carey's incorporation of several musical genres, as well as
the song's personalized lyrical content. Aside from its
critical acceptance, "Make It Happen" was successful in the
United States, but charted weakly internationally compared
to her previous singles. It peaked at number 5 on the
Billboard Hot 100 and finished at number 42 on
Billboard's Year-End Chart. The song reached number 7 in
Canada and the top 40 in the United Kingdom and Australia,
but did not reach the top 50 in the Netherlands and Germany.
The song's music video was filmed in a cathedral-like
church. A benefit event inside, titled "Save Our Church",
features Carey as the main performer, leading a choir in
song as she sings to the constant cheering and applause of
the crowd. Aside from the video's message of prayer and
religion, the video features men and women of different
backgrounds. Carey included the song on the set lists of all
of her concert tours throughout her career, and the track
was included on her compilation albums
Greatest Hits (2001) and
Playlist: The Very Best of Mariah Carey (2010).
METALLICA - THE UNFORGIVEN (1992) hit #35
The Unforgiven" is a song by American
heavy metal band
Metallica. It was released as the second single from
their eponymous fifth album
Metallica. Though one of the slower tracks on the
album, its
chord progression is distinctly one of the heavier. The
song deals with the theme of the struggle of the individual
against the efforts of those who would subjugate him.
The
song has since spawned two sequels (both in name proper as
well as thematically), in the form of "The Unforgiven II",
from the album
ReLoad, and "The Unforgiven III", from the
album
Death Magnetic.
Lars Ulrich explained that the band wanted to try
something new with the idea of a
ballad - instead of the standard melodic verse and heavy
chorus (as evidenced on their previous ballads "Fade
to Black", "Welcome
Home (Sanitarium)" and "One"),
the band opted to reverse the dynamic, with heavy, distorted
verses and a softer, melodic chorus, played with
classical guitars. The opening section contains
percussive instruments performed by Ulrich, and also a small
amount of keyboards.
Metallica is an American
heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, whose
releases include fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive
musicianship that placed them as one of the founding "big
four" of
thrash metal alongside
Slayer,
Megadeth, and
Anthrax. They formed in 1981 when
James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that
drummer
Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. As of 2003,
the line-up features long-time lead guitarist
Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist
Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield
and Ulrich. Previous members of the band are lead guitarist
Dave Mustaine (who went on to found the band
Megadeth), and bassists
Ron McGovney,
Cliff Burton and
Jason Newsted. The band also had a long collaboration
with producer
Bob Rock, who produced all of its albums from 1990 to
2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure
of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo.
GUNS N ROSES - NOVEMBER RAIN (1992) hit #3
November Rain" is a song by American
rock band
Guns N' Roses, written by lead singer
Axl Rose and released as a single in June 1992. It
appears on the album
Use Your Illusion I. It features a sweeping
orchestral backing and is one of Guns N' Roses' longest
songs.
"November Rain" reached #3 in the Billboard Singles
Charts.
The song is composed in the key of C major aside from the
coda, which is in C minor, but since the guitars, basses and
piano are tuned a half step down, the song sounds as if it's
in B major and B minor.
At 8:57, it is the second-longest song on the album, the
longest being the 10:16 "Coma".
Its distinct symphonic overtone owes to a sweeping string
arrangement, orchestrated by Rose. Most live performances
during the Use Your Illusion tour lacked the
orchestral backing of the song (the
1992 MTV Video Music Awards being the best-known
exception).
It is the longest song to reach the top 10 of the
Billboard Hot 100. The song peaked at #3 on the
chart, becoming the band's sixth and last Top 10 hit, and
eighth
Top 40 hit. On the radio, "November Rain" is sometimes
played in a shortened version of approximately six minutes,
but many
classic rock stations continue to play the full version.
At around seven minutes in, the song fades and then builds
into a two-minute
coda featuring lead guitar by lead guitarist
Slash, accompanied by vocal chants. This song is listed
at number six in the The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos list by
Guitar World. This song is also rated #9 in the
Richter Scale best songs of all time. "November Rain" was
voted #1 on the
Rock 1000 2006, an annual countdown of the top 1,000
rock songs by
New Zealand radio listeners. It was voted #2 on the
Rock 1000 2007, being beaten out by "Back
In Black" by
AC/DC. The song was placed at #140 on
Pitchfork Media'sTop 200 Tracks of the 90s.
SHANICE - I LOVE YOUR SMILE (1992) hit #2
I Love Your Smile" is a song recorded by
R&B singer
Shanice and released in 1991 as the first single from
her album
Inner Child. The song features saxophonist
Branford Marsalis. It met success in many countries,
including U.S., where it reached #2 on the
Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the
Billboard R&B charts. To date, it is her best known and
most successful hit.
Talib Kweli referenced the song in his single "Hot
Thing".
In the music video, Shanice is in a studio having several
pictures taken by a photographer. One scene shows her in a
leather jacket, another has her sitting in a chair in front
of a microphone stand, and another has her dancing with
several backup dancers. In the middle of the video, Shanice
walks through the park and the photographer hides behind a
tree while he takes more pictures of her. At the end,
Shanice offers to take a picture of a family, and then takes
a picture of the photographer.
Baby-Baby-Baby" is a song by the group
TLC. It was the second single released from their debut
album,
Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip and was the band's
second consecutive Top 10 hit. This is the first song which
doesn't feature a rap by Left Eye.
The single has been
considered their most successful single from their debut
album reaching #2 on the
Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on Billboard's
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks, becoming the group's
first #1 single on that chart. It spent 33 weeks on the
Billboard Hot 100 where it was one of the many songs that
was held from the number 1 spot by "End
of the Road" by
Boyz II Men. It was the 5th most successful song of 1992
according to the Billboard year end charts and was certified
Platinum by the RIAA. Rapper
Bow Wow sampled this song for his first single titled "You
Can Get It All" which features
Johnta Austin and is produced Jermaine Dupri who appears
in the Baby-Baby-Baby video.
The music video was filmed in a hotel that was
transformed to resemble the
Grambling State University campus. The video includes a
young
Jermaine Dupri portrayed as Left Eye's boyfriend. In the
middle of the video a shadow of Chilli and a boy kissing is
shown. This "boy" is actually a mannequin shown later on in
the video. It shows TLC dancing, and in a slumber party like
setting in some parts of the video.
Billboard magazine ranked TLC as one of the greatest
musical trios Between 1992 and 2003, the band accumulated
ten top ten singles, four number one singles, four
multi-platinum albums, and four
Grammy Awards. At the end of 1999, TLC was ranked as the
seventh most successful act of the 1990s by Billboard.
In 2008, the group was inducted into the All Time Hot 100
Artist Hall of Fame by the same magazine, at 56th place.
That year it was also listed as the #25 R&B/hip-hop artist
of the preceding 25 years.
VANESSA WILLIAMS - SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST (1992) hit #1
Save The Best For Last" is a
1992 single written by Phil Galdston,
Wendy Waldman and
Jon Lind in March 1989. It is considered
Vanessa Williams'
signature song. The lyrics' redemptive themes resonated
with Hannah Slater's story, as she had put together a
successful recording career following her earlier
Miss America resignation scandal. The song is a ballad
about a young female admirer of a single man who stands by
and watches as the object of her desires goes through years
of
dating, before he finally unexpectedly decides to
consummate a relationship with the singer.
"Save The Best
For Last" was not written specifically for Vanessa Williams.
There were a number of other singers who were offered the
song, they all turned it down. While recording her cd "The
Comfort Zone", at the last minute, a song had to be
replaced. Vanessa was played "Save The Best For Last", and
Vanessa said: "I can't believe nobody wants this song. I
have to have this song."
The single was Williams' third number one on the Soul
singles chart and topped the U.S.
Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks in 1992. "Save the Best
for Last" was ranked fourth in the Billboard Top 100 hits of
1992, becoming the biggest success of Williams' music
career. The song also went to #1 on the U.S.
adult contemporary and
R&B charts; it remained atop these charts for three
weeks apiece. Internationally, the single shot to number one
in
Australia, the
Netherlands, and
Canada, and to number three in the
United Kingdom, number two in
Ireland, and number three in
Japan.
ASCAP named it as its Song of the Year, meaning it was
performed more than any other song in 1992, and it was
nominated for the
Grammy Award for Song of the Year and
Record of the Year in 1993 losing to
Eric Clapton's
Tears In Heaven in both categories.
The idea for the
song came to Reid while reading an article about a man
arrested for getting drunk and shooting at his girlfriend's
car. The judge asked him if he had learned anything, to
which he replied, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't
make a woman love you if she don't." Reid and Shamblin were
both
country music songwriters, who according to some
accounts originally wrote the song as a fast,
bluegrass number. Upon slowing down the tempo
considerably, they realized the song gained considerable
power. It then made its way to Raitt. A pensive
ballad, "I Can't Make You Love Me" was recorded against
a quiet
electric piano-based arrangement, with prominent
piano fills and interpolations supplied by
Bruce Hornsby.
Raitt recorded the vocal in just one take in the studio,
later saying that it was so sad a song that she could not
recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just
said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen.'"
The song was a big hit for Raitt, reaching #18 on the
Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on the
Billboard Adult Contemporary chart . The song placed on
the
Billboard Year-End chart for 1992, and the song's
popularity helped solidify her remarkable late-in-career
commercial success that had begun two years before. In the
time since, "I Can't Make You Love Me" has gone on to become
a pop standard and a mainstay of adult contemporary radio
formats.
For Raitt, the song was notoriously difficult to sing,
due to its required vocal range, difficult phrasing and
breathing, and the emotional content involved. At the
televised
Grammy Awards of 1992 Raitt performed it in an even more
austere setting than on record, with just her and Hornsby
highlighted. As she negotiated the final vocal line, she let
out a big audible and visible sigh of relief that she had
successfully gotten through it.
MR. BIG - TO BE WITH YOU (1992) hit #1
To Be with You" is the title of a song by the
American
hard rock band
Mr. Big. It is the 11th and final track from the 1991
album
Lean into It. The song charted in 20 plus countries,
many of them at number one, such as on the United States
Billboard Hot 100. It also reached a peak of
number three in the
UK.
The song was written and composed by
Eric Martin during his teen years. Raoul contributed to
its melodic arrangements later on. Writing credit is also
given to David Grahame, a songwriter working for the label
at the time (though exactly what contributions each of the
three men made to the song is unclear).
While in Paul's apartment at Yucca Street in L.A., Eric
and Paul were laying out their compositions. Eric had a
ballad called "To Be With You". Paul had his psychedelic
rock song called "Green Tinted Sixties Mind". Both felt the
two songs were strong enough to be included in their
upcoming album, despite it being purely rock; and true
enough, these songs remained throughout the course of their
career as a group and as solo artists.
"To Be With You" is about a man who has his eye on a
woman who has recently experienced a broken heart from a
previous relationship.
"Free Your Mind" debuted at number
eighty-nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 the week of
September 12, 1992. Within one week, it jumped to number
forty-five, then to number twenty-five, and continued to
make impressive strides until it eventually peaked at number
eight the week of October 31, 1992. Altogether, "Free Your
Mind" spent sixteen weeks in the top forty of the
Billboard Hot 100.
"Free Your Mind" used the chorus line of a
George Clinton song with his permission. The guitar and
bass tracks for the song were written and recorded by San
Francisco-based guitarist Jinx Jones. The opening line:
"Prejudice, wrote a song about it. Like to hear it? Here it
go!", is adapted from a line originally used by
David Alan Grier's character
Calhoun Tubbs from
Fox's
In Living Color.
The song is known for its award-winning
music video, directed by
Mark Romanek. On January 21, 1993, En Vogue performed
the song on a sixth-season episode of the
NBC
sitcom
A Different World (where they guest-starred as
Vernon Gaines' nieces). It was certified gold by the
RIAA in late 1992. It is one of several songs to feature
all four members of the group on lead vocals.
One" is a song by
Irish
rock band
U2.
It is the third track from their 1991 album
Achtung Baby, and it was released as the record's
third
single in March 1992. During the album's recording
sessions at
Hansa Studios in Berlin, conflict arose between the band
members over the direction of U2's sound and the quality of
their material. Tensions almost prompted the band to break
up until they achieved a breakthrough by improvising "One";
the song was written after the band members found
inspiration from a chord progression that guitarist
The Edge composed. The lyrics, written by lead singer
Bono, were informed by the band members' fractured
relationships and the
German reunification. Although the lyrics ostensibly
describe "disunity", they have been interpreted in other
ways.
"One" was released as a
benefit single, with proceeds going towards
AIDS research. The song reached number one in the
Irish Singles Charts on 5th March 1992. It peaked at
number seven in the
UK Singles Chart and at number ten on the
Billboard Hot 100. It topped the US Billboard
Album Rock Tracks and
Modern Rock Tracks charts. In promotion of the song, the
band had several music videos filmed, although they were not
pleased until the third video was created. The song has
since been acclaimed as one of the greatest songs of all
time, and it is consistently featured in listener and critic
polls. The song has been played by U2 at every one of their
tour concerts since the song's live debut in 1992, and it
has appeared in many of the band's
concert films. In a live setting, "One" is often used by
the band to promote
human rights or
social justice causes, and the song lends its namesake
to Bono's charitable organization, the
ONE Campaign. In 2006, U2 re-recorded the song as part
of a duet with
contemporary R&B singer
Mary J. Blige on her album
The Breakthrough.
"One" has frequently appeared on lists of the greatest songs. In
2010, Rolling Stone placed the song at number 36 on its list of "The
500 Greatest Songs of All Time", making it the highest-ranked U2
song. In 2003, a special edition issue of Q, titled "1001 Best
Songs Ever", named "One" the greatest song of all-time.
VH1 ranked
the song second on its list of "Greatest Songs of the 90s", and voters
in an April 2006 poll on VH1 named the song as having the UK's
number-one lyric: "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers". In
2005,
Blender ranked the song at number four on its list of the "The
500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born". The following year, readers of
Q voted "One" the fifth-greatest song in history. The song
subsequently appeared as one of seven U2 songs in the 2006 music
reference book

Secrets
MC HAMMER - 2 LEGIT 2 QUIT (1992) hit #5
Too Legit to Quit" (stylized as "2 Legit 2 Quit")
is a song by rap artist
MC Hammer (whose name was shortened to "Hammer")
released in 1991 as the title track and first single of his
third
album of the same name. It proved to be successful in
the U.S., peaking at the Top 10 of the
Billboard Hot 100, at #5. The single also peaked at #60
on the
UK Singles Chart. Hit songs "This is the Way We Roll"
and "Too Legit to Quit" were performed by Hammer on
Saturday Night Live. Along with "Addams
Groove", and other songs, "2 Legit 2 Quit" was featured
in the film
The Addams Family in 1991.
The
music video (directed by
Rupert Wainwright) for the song begins with an impatient
crowd waiting for MC Hammer to perform, while Hammer has a
lengthy conversation with
James Brown, who calls Hammer "Godson"
and enlists him to get the glove of
Michael Jackson. Brown endows Hammer with several blasts
of energy, before sending Hammer off to perform. The
performance is high budget and laden with impressive
pyrotechnics. The video ends with a purported Jackson (seen
only from behind) having seen the performance and conceding
Hammer to be the superior dancer, while doing the "2 Legit 2
Quit" hand gesture. Hammer personally spoke with Jackson on
the phone about the video, with Jackson giving his approval
of it. This story was mentioned several years ago on
The Wendy Williams Show (July 27, 2009) when MC was
a guest.
The video was number 5 in
MAX music's World's Worst Ever Video countdown and
number 1 in its Forgotten Video Clips countdown in 2008. It
was also voted number 24 on
MTV's
all-time "25 Lame" countdown in 1999. However, it has been
ranked as one of the
most expensive videos ever produced, and a viewer's
favorite by
VH1.
A hand gesture became popular as a result of the title
song and video which was also shown in the "Addams
Groove" movie video and on
MTV.
It involved forming the number two for "Too", an L for
"Legit", two for "to", and a "cut" motion for "Quit" with
the hand and fingers (as seen in the video).
"Constant Craving" peaked at #38 on the
Billboard Hot 100. It also reached #2 on the
Billboard
adult contemporary chart.
In the UK, the song was initially a modest hit when released
in 1992, but after being re-released in 1993 in the wake of
its American success, it peaked at #15 on the
UK Singles Chart in its fourth week.
WHITNEY HOUSTON - I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU (1992) hit #1
Album:
The Bodyguard soundtrack (1992)
February 17th 1993 - my #6 favorite daily song for 20 days at age 22
in 4th year University. Whitney had 7
different #1 songs on my daily chart and she to this date holds the
record for the most #1 weekly top 40 songs with 9 different songs and
total count of 50 weeks which is also a record to this date after 30
years!
Whitney Houston has been my favorite singer of all time now for 25 years.
In 1992, singer
Whitney Houston recorded the song for
the soundtrack to
The Bodyguard, her film debut. Houston was
originally to record
Jimmy Ruffin's "What
Becomes of the Brokenhearted" as the lead single from
The Bodyguard. However, when it was discovered the song
was to be used for
Fried Green Tomatoes, Houston requested a different
song and her co-star
Kevin Costner brought her
Linda Ronstadt's 1975 version of "I Will Always Love
You" from her album
Prisoner in Disguise. Houston and producer
David Foster re-arranged the song as a soul ballad. Her
record company did not feel a song with an
a cappella introduction would be as successful; however,
Houston and Costner insisted on retaining the a cappella
intro. The tenor saxophone solo was played by
Kirk Whalum. Whitney Houston's recording is not the only
version of the song featured in the movie. In a scene where
she dances with Kevin Costner, a version by
John Doe can be heard playing on a jukebox.
Houston's version was a massive worldwide success, appearing
at number 68 on Billboard's "Greatest Songs of All
Time
