| WITCH QUEEN - BANG A GONG (1979) February 14th 1990 - my #9 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 19 living at the monastery in Muenster, SK for 1st year University at St Peters College. My fellow students also living there in residence were Liem Nguyen and Calvin Waldbillig. In 1979, studio disco group, Witch Queen, had a disco version of the song, simply titled, "Bang A Gong". It peaked at number eight on the disco charts
Get It On" is a song by the British
glam rock group
T. Rex, featured on their 1971 album
Electric Warrior. Written by frontman
Marc Bolan, "Get It On" was the second chart-topper for
T. Rex on the
UK Singles Chart. In the
United States, the song was retitled "Bang a Gong
(Get It On)" to avoid confusion with a number of the
same name by the group
Chase. Bolan claimed to have written
the song out of his desire to record
Chuck Berry's "Little
Queenie", and said that the riff is taken from the Berry
song. In fact, a line (And meanwhile, I'm still thinking)
of "Little Queenie" is said at the fade of "Get It On".
This was the song that virtually ended the once-solid
friendship between Bolan and
John Peel, after Peel made clear his lack of enthusiasm
for the song on air after playing his advance white label
copy. Bolan and Peel only spoke once more before the
former's death in 1977. During a December
1971
Top of the Pops performance,
Elton John mimed a piano on the song.
The piano
glissando on the record was performed by
Rick Wakeman. Wakeman, who was desperate for work at the
time to pay his rent, had bumped into Bolan in
Oxford Street, who offered him the session. Wakeman
pointed out to Tony Visconti that the record did not
actually need a piano player. Visconti suggested that he
could add a gliss; Wakeman said that Visconti could do that,
to which Bolan replied, "you want your rent, don't you?"
Wakeman did and earned £9 for his efforts

| TERRY HOKNES - THIRD RETURN (1989) Opus #382 - age
18 I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6. I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years. Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman. This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992. I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988. By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268. I wrote another 178 songs in 1989. By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524. At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery. I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total. I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996. Even though I was writing all the time and working and performing my own songs at home I never had a band so I didn't play any of the songs in public and I didn't have any money or materials to record proper good quality recordings. So all my demo's were quite primitive and low quality audio. I started recording in 1982 singing along with records. In 1983 I started recording my own versions of songs live on guitar and vocals along with my best friend of the time Zender Millar. In 1989 Nels Krauss and I rented a 4-track cassette recorder for the first time and I rushed through 55 songs in 7 days just to get them on tape though I didnt have any good quality microphones, headphones and knew nothing about EQ and recording levels etc. Each year my demo's would get a bit better sounding and a little more polished so to this day I don't feel I have done justice to any original songs I recorded from 1986 to 1994 when I did the bulk of my writing and recording. |
| CHRISSEY STEELE- LOVE YOU TIL IT HURTS (1991) Album: Magnet To Steele (1991) I learned this song from video play on Much Music. The album would be nominated for a Canadian Juno for best hard rock album of the year but lost out to Rush. October 31st 1991 - my #1 favorite daily song for 5 days at age 20 in 3rd year University.
Headpins are a
Canadian
rock group, founded as a
side project in the late 1970s by then
Chilliwack members Ab Bryant and
Brian MacLeod. Macleod was impressed by the vocal
talents of Vancouver rock singer
Denise McCann, and asked her to join his new venture.
Originally,
Matt Frenette played drums for The Headpins while Bernie
Aubin played drums for fellow Vancouver band Loverboy but,
within months, Aubin and Frenette swapped bands where each
continues to play to the present. The Headpins began gigging
around the Vancouver area throughout 1980, quickly building
a fan base. McCann left at the end of that first year, and
MacLeod brought in
Darby Mills to provide lead vocals.
They achieved their height of popularity in 1982 and 1983, with songs such as "Don't It Make You Feel" (Sample "Don't It..." here) and "Just One More Time". Soon after, Darby Mills was replaced by Chrissy Steele. Later, Steele went on to make her own band with MacLeod and signed with Chrysalis Records, although the outfit was soon dropped by the label. She ended up having two hits, "Love You 'Til It Hurts" and the ballad, "Love Don't Last Forever." |
| ASIA - HEAT OF THE MOMENT (1982) hit #4
Heat of the Moment" is the first single released by
progressive rock band
Asia from their 1982
eponymous debut. The song was the most popular of the
album, and a big hit in the USA, peaking at #1 on the
Billboard
Mainstream Rock chart and #4 on the
Billboard Top Singles chart. It was written by
John Wetton and
Geoff Downes. "Heat of the Moment" is featured at the
beginning of another Asia song called "Don't
Call Me" as a dialing number from a telephone.
The lyrics contain the line, "And now you find yourself in 82". While this is often interpreted to refer to the year 1982, Wetton has said that it refers to a location. However, in live versions, Wetton has often substituted the current year for "82" in the second verse and rhymed it with another word
Asia's eponymous debut album
Asia, released in March 1982, received
considerable commercial success, spending nine
weeks at number one in the U.S. album chart and
selling over 4 million copies in the U.S. alone.
The album sold over 10 million worldwide. The
singles "Only Time Will Tell" (No.17) and "Heat
of the Moment" (No.4) became huge
Top 40 hits, with the latter cracking the
Top Five, and the former remaining a stadium
favourite at U.S. sporting events. "Sole
Survivor" also received heavy air play on rock
stations across the U.S., as did "Wildest
Dreams" and "Here Comes The Feeling". The band's
best performing single, and perhaps their most
recognised and popular hit song, "Heat of the
Moment", climbed to No.4 on the American Top 40
charts, having debuted on the AT40 on 1 May
1982, and spent a total of 12 weeks in there.
In the U.S., the band did extremely well, selling out every date on their debut tour, which began at The University of Akron's EJ Thomas Concert Hall and continued in small theatres but quickly expanded into arenas because of high ticket demand. Asia would go on to receive a Grammy nomination as Best New Artist of the Year. MTV also played Asia videos on heavy rotation — as many as 5 times a day. Billboard named the Asia debut as album of the year. Asia's logo and cover art were handled by illustrator Roger Dean of Yes and Uriah Heep fame. |
| DION - RUBY BABY (1963) hit #2 Ruby Baby" is a song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was originally recorded by The Drifters. Their version was released on a single by Atlantic Records as catalog number 45 1089 in 1956 The song was a major R&B hit for them that year. Columbia Records released Dion's remake on a single as catalogue number 4 42662 in 1963 It later became a number two Billboard Hot 100 hit for him.
Dion Francis DiMucci (born July 18, 1939), better
known mononymously as Dion, is an
American
singer-songwriter whose work has incorporated elements
of
doo-wop,
pop oldies music,
rock and
R&B styles to straight
blues in his recent work.
One of the most popular American rock and roll performers of the pre-British Invasion era, Dion had over a dozen Top 40 hits in the late 1950s and early 60s. He is best remembered for the 1961 singles "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer". Due to changing public tastes and personal problems, Dion faltered in the mid-1960s; he regained popularity later in the decade and into the early 1970s with more mature, contemplative material such as "Abraham, Martin & John". He has continued making music to the present, earning reappraisals from critics who earlier dismissed him as a teen idol. Dion was elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. |
| TOTO - LOVERS IN THE NIGHT (1982) Album: Toto IV (1982) My new best friend for Grade 10 was Nels Krauss and starting in Grade 11 in the fall of 1986 when we were both 15, I started to teach him how to play the bass guitar at grandmas house on Taylor Street since it was nearby and we would hang out after school all the time and I used this song as an early source of teaching how to play a bass part and the cool guitar scale-like riff. At 3:17 the chord structure and melodic riff is exactly the same as one from Klaatu from the 1977 Hope album.
The album received six
Grammy Awards including
Record of the Year for "Rosanna",
Album of the Year and
Producer of the Year for the band. It
reached number four on the
Billboard Pop Albums chart shortly after
its release in 1982. The single "Rosanna"
reached number two on the
Billboard Hot 100, while the album's
third single, "Africa", became the group's only
Hot 100 #1 hit. Both songs were smash hits in
the UK as well, reaching no. 12 and no. 3
respectively. "I Won't Hold You Back" came next
and reached the top 10 in the USA and the top 40
in the UK. With the success of "Africa", the
album climbed back into the top 10 in early
1983. The album featured a stronger
dose of the pop/hard rock/R&B-fusion that had
characterized their self-titled first album than
had been heard on their previous two albums
Toto is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1976. The band's current lineup consists of Joseph Williams (lead vocals), David Paich (keyboards), Steve Porcaro (keyboards), Steve Lukather (guitars, vocals), and Simon Phillips (drums). Bass player Nathan East is currently touring with Toto as a guest musician, as Mike Porcaro is too ill to tour. Toto is known for a musical style that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B and jazz. They are regularly associated with the soft rock genre. |
| BANANARAMA - CRUEL SUMMER (1984) hit #9
Cruel Summer" is a pop song originally written and
performed by
Bananarama that was a top ten hit in Britain in
1983. Singer
Sara Dallin said the song "played on the darker side (of
summer songs): it looked at the oppressive heat, the misery
of wanting to be with someone as the summer ticked by. We've
all been there!"
"Cruel Summer" was not an immediate international success when it was released. Although it hit #8 on the UK Chart, its international popularity soared after its inclusion in the 1984 feature film The Karate Kid; this was a year after the song's original release (the song was released in 1984 in the US). The group did not allow the song to be included in the film's soundtrack, but regardless it was their first top ten hit (#9) in the USA. When Bananarama were still struggling to make money in their early years, they even performed the song at a beauty contest in Hawaii. The song has since been revived in various forms. It appeared in several television commercials, was included on the soundtrack to the movie Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, and was covered by other acts, such as Ace of Base, who scored an international hit with it (their version even reached gold in the US), and Blestenation on the Blue Crush soundtrack. In 2003, Swedish electronica female artist Sophie Rimheden sampled the beat and bassline from the song on the track "In Your Mind" of the album HiFi. |
| EXPOSE - LET ME BE THE ONE (1987) hit #7
Let Me Be the One" is a 1987 song by the
freestyle
girl group
Exposé. The song was written by producer and group
founder
Lewis Martineé and appears on their debut album,
Exposure. The lead vocals on the song were performed
by
Gioia Bruno.
Released as a single in August 1987, "Let Me Be the One" became the group's third consecutive top ten single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in October of that year, when it peaked at #7. The song also reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. In the United Kingdom, the song reached #76 on the British pop chart.
Exposé is an American
vocal group. Primarily consisting of
lead vocalists
Ann Curless,
Jeanette Jurado, and
Gioia Bruno, the group achieved much of
their success in the late 1980s and early 1990s,
becoming the first group to have four top ten
hits on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart from their
debut album, including their 1988 #1 hit "Seasons
Change".
Led by the huge pop/dance hit "Come Go with Me", which reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the group solidified its freestyle music connection. During the summer of 1987, a re-recorded version of "Point of No Return" was released, with Jurado performing lead vocals, and it too topped out at #5 on the Hot 100. While the initial distribution of Exposure to suppliers contained the original 1984 version of that song, subsequent pressings contained the new vocal version; this has led to the original pressings of the album being considered a collector's item "Let Me Be the One", a mid-tempo R&B track with Bruno on lead vocal, garnered significant R&B support and reached #7 on the Hot 100. The group's biggest hit occurred in February 1988 with the #1 Hot 100 single, "Seasons Change". Along with that came a Soul Train Award nomination for Best New Artist; television appearances on American Bandstand, Solid Gold, Showtime at the Apollo, and The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers; and the group was tapped to be the opening act for Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam during its national tour. Exposure remains one of the most successful dance albums ever released, reaching triple platinum status. During the group's peak, Exposé endured legal issues behind the scenes. Similar to the girl groups of the 1960s, the members of Exposé had a restrictive contract, and there were reports in the media of backstage battles. According to Bruno, they were only paid $200 (US) per show. Reportedly, the record label intervened to keep peace between the members and the producers. Despite this intervention, the members filed a lawsuit and ultimately settled their legal case for a renegotiated contract |
| AFTER 7 - HEAT OF THE MOMENT (1991) hit #19 Album: After 7 (1989) Catchy R&B/dance pop song. May 2nd 1991 - my #2 favorite song for 8 days at age 20 around the time that I saw them in concert open for Whitney Houston at SaskPlace. I had bought this album at a book/record sale.
After 7 is an
R&B group founded in 1988 by brothers
Melvin and
Kevon Edmonds, and Keith Mitchell. The Edmonds brothers
are the siblings of popular
pop and R&B
singer-songwriter-producer
Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds" (Melvin is older, and Kevon
- born Kevin - is younger). Mitchell was long thought to be
the cousin of Babyface's then-partner,
songwriter-producer
Antonio "L.A." Reid, however, this was actually set up
as a marketing tool for the group and was actually
incorrect.
Virgin Records released their self-titled debut album in autumn 1989, which included the hits "Heat of the Moment", "Can't Stop" and the quiet-storm staple "Ready or Not". After promoting the album and seeing it go platinum, they scored a hit with the Motown-influenced "Nights Like This" on 1991's The Five Heartbeats soundtrack. The trio returned with Takin' My Time in 1992, which included the hit cover of The Originals' "Baby I'm For Real". The trio released their last album, Reflections in 1995, which included the hit "'Til You Do Me Right This song hit #19 in 1990.

| METALLICA - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (1992)
hit #34
Nothing Else Matters" is a power-ballad by the
American
heavy metal band
Metallica. It was released as the third single from its
self-titled fifth studio album,
Metallica. The song peaked at number 11 on the
Billboard
Mainstream Rock Tracks chart as well as top-ten
positions on many European charts. "Nothing Else Matters"
was featured as a playable track in the music video game
Guitar Hero: Metallica. The song has been covered
over forty times.
Singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield wrote the song (credited to Hetfield/Ulrich) while he was on the phone with his then girlfriend. Since he held the phone with one hand, he plucked the four open strings of a standard E-minor chord with the other, which eventually made up the first two bars of the song. The lyrics, which talk about being "so close, no matter how far", were also dedicated to his girlfriend, indicating the bond they shared even when Hetfield was on tour. Initially, the song was not meant to be released, as Hetfield had written it for himself, but after drummer Lars Ulrich heard it, it was considered for the album. Its intro is an E minor arpeggio beginning with the open low E followed by the open G, B and high E strings. It is one of the few Metallica songs in which Hetfield, not Kirk Hammett, plays the guitar solo. Given that Hetfield recorded all rhythm and most harmony tracks on the band's first five albums, Hammett does not play on the studio recording, making it one of two songs in the whole Metallica repertoire, along with Cliff Burton's "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth", in which he does not appear. Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, whose releases include fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the founding "big four" of thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. They formed in 1981 when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. As of 2003, the line-up features long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield and Ulrich. Previous members of the band are lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to found the band Megadeth), and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. |
| KT TUNSTALL - SUDDENLY I SEE (2007) hit #21
Suddenly I See" is a song by Scottish
singer-songwriter
KT Tunstall and is featured on her debut album,
Eye to the Telescope. It was released on 29 August
2005 as the third single (second single in
United States) from the album, charting at #12 in the
UK Singles Chart (see
2005 in British music). The single was a hit in
Australia where it charted at #6 on the ARIA Singles
Chart. It was also certified gold by ARIA for sales of
35,000 copies.
The song was Tunstall's highest charting in the United Kingdom, and spent 26 weeks in the Top 75 Singles. "Suddenly I See" won her an Ivor Novello Award in 2006 in the category of Best Song Musically and Lyrically. It is inspired by New York singer and poet Patti Smith, whose album cover for Horses also inspired Tunstall's album cover for Eye to the Telescope. In the summer of 2006, "Suddenly I See" became popular in the United States after being featured prominently at the beginning of the movie The Devil Wears Prada. The song also features at the end of the film Blind Dating, which was released in the same year, starring Chris Pine. It was also the farewell music for female contestants eliminated from the television show So You Think You Can Dance, featured on the season finale of the MTV show The Hills, at the end of a Ghost Whisperer season two episode, and the series premiere of Ugly Betty. It was also featured in the second episode of the second season of the TV series Grey's Anatomy. Jennie Garth and Derek Hough performed a quickstep to a cover of the song for their performance in week 2 of season 5 of Dancing with the Stars. Florence Henderson and Corky Ballas performed a quickstep to a cover of the song for their performance in week 2 of season 11 of Dancing with the Stars. Tunstall also performed the song live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The song was one of the candidates for Hillary Clinton's campaign song for her 2008 presidential campaign. It features in the Torchwood episode "Greeks Bearing Gifts". The song is featured on the soundtrack of the game Thrillville in the park radio stations. |
| NICKI MINAJ - SUPER BASS (2011) hit #3
Super Bass" is a song by
Trinidadian recording artist
Nicki Minaj from the deluxe edition of her debut studio
album,
Pink Friday (2010). It officially impacted rhythmic
radio in the United States on April 5, 2011 as the album's
fifth single. The song was co-written by Minaj, along with
Ester Dean and
Kane Beatz, who also produced the song along with JMIKE.
According to Minaj, the song's lyrics detail the story of a
playful romance between a male and a female. The song draws
from the
electronic and
pop genres while Minaj raps over a
hip hop beat.
"Super Bass" received generally positive reviews from music critics, who was complimented its memorable hook, lyrical context and for its chorus. The song peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, and reached number three in New Zealand, as well as number six in Australia and Canada. It also reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. A music video for the single was shot in March 2011 by director Sanaa Hamri. The video shows Minaj playfully taunting a group of men, and makes use of multiple props, all of which are coloured bubblegum pink. The music video received generally positive reviews from critics, most of whom complimented the "eye candy" and colorful visuals seen throughout the video. The song has been classified as Minaj's signature song. "Super Bass" has been certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and has sold more than four million digital copies as of May 2012, becoming one of the best-selling singles in the United States |
| TERRY HOKNES - THE JOHN (2011) Opus #1000 - written in 1996 at age
25 Official Music Video promoted online - Video features Ewan Currie and Ryan Gullen of The Sheepdogs - juno award winners and Canadian rock band who hit #1 with their 2012 album nationally. Video also features SJ Kardash of Violent Kin and Arnold Van Lambalgen from CFCR 90.5 FM Radio in Saskatoon. As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic. I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25. But since then I can go over a year at a time without writing a song but really focusing in most cases on a more commercial type of polished song however I still venture into all possible genres. I continue to play and sing every part on all my songs and recordings. I hired Neil Meckelborg of Audio Art to record my songs in 2001. We started out recording a full album at their location downtown behind the Bus depot but eventually worked on recordings at Neil's private studio. In total we recorded 3 full albums of material of my songs and a full length album of songs I wrote with Marilyn Parney that I produced. Neil and I also worked on a Trooper hit song karaoke CD in 2001. I spent 18 months recording with Neil and over 40 songs and over $10,000.00 in studio bills I paid at that time to record the best quality audio ever on my songs. Neil had used Sonar Cakewalk so I learned how to use it and have used that now for a decade in my own studio. |
| MADONNA - HUNG UP (2005)
Album: Confessions On A Dance Floor (2005) November 5th 2005 - my #1 favorite top 40 song for 12 weeks straight when I was 34 and living on my own on Eastview dating Cheryl in Regina. It became my 5th #1 favorite top 40 weekly hit by Madonna during her career. An amazing dance song with the great hook from the Abba song.
"Hung Up" is a song by American singer-songwriter
Madonna. It was written and produced in collaboration
with
Stuart Price, and released as the first single from her
tenth studio album,
Confessions on a Dance Floor. Initially used in a
number of television advertisements and serials, the song
was released as the album's lead single on October 17, 2005.
It has since also made an appearance on her 2009 greatest
hits album,
Celebration. It also became Madonna's first track to
be released to
iTunes.
"Hung Up" prominently features a sample of the pop group ABBA's hit single "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", for which Madonna personally sought permission from ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Musically the song is influenced by 1980s pop, with a chugging groove and chorus and a background element of a ticking clock that suggests the fear of wasting time. Lyrically the song is written as a traditional dance number about a strong, independent woman who has relationship troubles. |
| THE BEATLES - MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (1967) Album: Magical Mystery Tour (1967)
Magical Mystery Tour" is a song by
The Beatles, the opening track and theme song for the
album, double EP and
TV film of the same name. Unlike the theme songs for
their other film projects, it was not released as a single.
The song is credited to
Lennon–McCartney, though written primarily by
Paul McCartney. McCartney said it was co-written.
John Lennon said, "Paul's song. Maybe I did part of it,
but it was his concept." In 1972, Lennon said, "Paul wrote
it. I helped with some of the lyric." The remaining lyrics
explain in a general way the premise of the film: a
mystery tour of the type that was popular in
Britain when the Beatles were young. Lennon and
McCartney expanded the tour to make it magical, which
allowed it to be "a little more surreal than the real ones."
There are also other interpretations of the song as an
explicit reference to drugs, since the Beatles were
experiencing
acid in those years. Paul McCartney himself said about
the song:
|
| THE BEATLES - AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (1966) Album: Revolver (1966)
And Your Bird Can Sing" is a song by
The Beatles, released on their 1966 album
Revolver in the United Kingdom and on
Yesterday...and Today in the United States. The
songwriting credit is
Lennon–McCartney, though the song was written primarily
by
John Lennon. However,
Paul McCartney claims to have helped on the lyric,
estimating the song as "80-20" to Lennon. The working title
was "You Don't Get Me". Lennon was later dismissive of the
song, as he was of many of his compositions at the time,
referring to it as "another of my throwaways...fancy paper
around an empty box".
The song is memorable for its extended dual-guitar melody, played by George Harrison and Paul McCartney. A version of the song featuring Harrison on his Rickenbacker 12-string guitar was recorded on 20 April 1966 but was scrapped; the group recorded the album version on 26 April. The rejected version, heard on the Anthology 2 album, features a vocal track on which Lennon and McCartney are giggling hysterically. The Anthology liner notes state that the tapes do not indicate the source of the laughter |
| ABBA - WATERLOO (1974) Album: Waterloo (1974)
Waterloo" was the first single from Swedish pop group
ABBA's second album
Waterloo, and their first for
Epic and
Atlantic. This was also the first single to be credited
as "ABBA".
The song won ABBA the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest on 6 April and began their path to worldwide fame. The Swedish version single was coupled with "Honey, Honey" (Swedish version), while the English version featured "Watch Out" as the B-side. The single became their first #1 hit in several countries, reached the U.S. top 10 and went on to sell nearly six million copies making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. "Waterloo" is the quintessential Eurovision song, according to Dr Harry Witchel, physiologist and music expert at the University of Bristol

| THE BEATLES - YOU LIKE ME TOO MUCH (1965) Album: Help (1965)
You Like Me Too Much" is a song by
The Beatles written by
George Harrison. It was released that year on the
Help! album in the United Kingdom and on
Beatles VI in the United States.
The song is in the key of G Major and in 4/4 time There is an introduction using piano and electric piano, with Paul McCartney and George Martin playing two different piano parts on separate end of the same Steinway grand piano. The Steinway appears only in the song's intro and was overdubbed separately, as were McCartney's bass and Harrison's vocal overdubs. The electric piano is a Hohner Pianet, played by John Lennon, and you can hear the instrument's tremolo being switched off after the intro. The piano introduction was later used by Bob Dylan for his song "Temporary Like Achilles". The quick transition from G chord to a flat-III (Bflat) is unusual, especially as its F-natural note is melodically sustained against the following D-Major chord (with its concomitant F#) creating a "the most bluesy moment of the entire song." The verse opens with three repetitions of a simple four note motif ("Though you've gone away this morning, you'll be back again tonight") during which the chords mirror the lyrics in shifting from ii (Am chord) on "gone away" to IV (C chord) on "back again" to the tonic (G chord) on "tonight. The song was recorded on 17 February 1965 in Abbey Road studio 2. It was one of the two songs on Help! written by Harrison, with the other being "I Need You". Help! was the first album since the 1963 release of With the Beatles to include songs written by Harrison. |
