| BLACK BOX - RIDE ON TIME (1989) #1 song of 1989 in UK
Album: Dreamland (1989) February 10th 1991 - my #1 favorite daily song for 7 days at age 20 in 1st year University. Powerful vocals to a very catchy chord structure and beat made me go out and buy this CD and all of UK did too. "Ride on Time" is a 1989 song recorded by band Black Box. It was later released on their debut LP Dreamland. The song was a chart success in many countries and a number-one hit in the UK and Ireland
The song was written and produced by the Italian production
team Groove Groove Melody, consisting of DJ Daniele Davoli,
programmer Mirko Limoni and musician Valerio Semplici. The
team worked with French model
Katrin Quinol, who was the face and image for the group
Black Box. In the video and in live performances Quinol
lip-synced to the original vocals.
The song sampled
Loleatta Holloway's 1980 disco hit "Love
Sensation" and attracted some controversy for the
uncredited use of Holloway's vocals from that song

| TERRY HOKNES - DRIFTING CLOUD (1998)
Opus
#146 I wrote this song the week I turned 17 in 1988. I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6. I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years. Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman. This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992. I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988. By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268. I wrote another 178 songs in 1989. By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524. At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery. I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total. I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996. |
| MARGARITA SHAMRAKOV - NYC (2005)
Album: Tragedy (2007) I joined a unique website in November 2005 called www.garageband.com which was for unsigned music acts that wanted to get online critiques from their fellow unsigned peers. To get your songs critiqued you had to first critique 20 other songs by unknown acts. They would only play the song for you and not give you any bio or info about the act itself. I first heard What Is The Meaning Of Life by Margarita Shamrakov on the site and gave it rave reviews. I liked all her music so much that I contacted her and we would write back and forth periodically for the next 6 years. I was impressed in all the self promotion she had done online including getting 146,000 views on her myspace page. She had won a John Lennon songwriting contest and had met Yoko Ono in person. My wife Valerie and I went to New York in April 2011 and got to meet up with Margarita for supper. There is something amazing about Margarita's songs that intrigue me with their dark melodies, great hooks, piano riffs and unique chord structures. December 7th 2005 - one of my favorite daily songs. |
| 3OH!3 featuring KATY PERRY - STARSTRUKK (2009)
Album: Want (2009) This song sounded so amazing with headphones on that I got hooked to the song - the low end and rhythm section was so powerful. The whistling verses are a bit silly but the chorus is very intriguing. December 21st 2009 - my #1 favorite daily song for 36 days including Xmas 2009 and my 39th birthday. This was Katy Perry's 2nd #1 hit on my daily chart. It was my #9 favorite daily song of 2009 and #9 favorite daily song of 2010. Starstrukk" is a song recorded by American electronic rock group 3OH!3. It is their third single and their second single to be released from their second studio album, Want. A radio-only and the deluxe album version has been released featuring pop star Katy Perry. The version featuring Katy Perry has had considerable success in Australia, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Poland and the United Kingdom, reaching the top 5 in all of these countries. It is the follow-up to their debut single "Don't Trust Me
"Starstrukk" debuted in the
United States at #95 and peaked at #66. In
Canada, the song peaked at #31, becoming the group's
second top forty hit there. The song hit the top 5 in the
United Kingdom on December 20, 2009, for the week ending
December 26, 2009. It stayed at #5 the following week before
falling to #6. On January 10, 2010, it climbed to #3 for the
week ending January 16, 2010, giving it its British chart
peak. "Starstrukk" is 3OH!3's highest peaking single in the
UK. It has since been certified Gold by the BPI for sales of
400,000+ It peaked at #4 in
Australia, becoming the group's second Top 5 hit in the
country. In
New Zealand, meanwhile, the song peaked at #16

| PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS - I HEAR A VOICE (1967)
Album: Revolution (1967) October 16th 1988 - my #1 favorite daily song for 10 days. I got on a major kick for the Raiders in late 1988 which landed them being my favorite group of 1988. In late 1988 I went on a campaign to play and learn as many recordings from 1968 on the 20th anniversary. The Raiders had multiple albums out that year so I had lots of great psychedelic tunes to learn. This was the 3rd of 6 #1 daily hits by The Raiders during a 2.5 year period. Revolution! is the seventh studio album by American pop rock group Paul Revere & the Raiders. Produced by Terry Melcher and released in 1967, it reached number 25 on the U.S. albums chart and yielded two top 40 singles. The album cover photo was taken on the porch of a house located at the corner of East 15th Street and Mississippi Avenue in Joplin, MissouriRevolution! featured such session musicians as Ry Cooder, Van Dyke Parks, Hal Blaine and Glen Campbell. It peaked at number 25 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. In a 1967 review, Billboard called the album a "driving package" that should continue the band's "successful chart string Paul Revere & the Raiders is an American rock band that saw considerable U.S. mainstream success in the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s with hits such as "Kicks" (1966; ranked number 400 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time), "Hungry" (1966), "Him Or Me - What's It Gonna Be?" (1967) and the 1971 No. 1 single "Indian Reservation |
| ABBA - GIMME GIMME GIMME (1979)
Album: Greatest Hits Volume 2 (1980) This is likely the very first pop/rock songs I ever heard growing up as my best friend Zender Millar had the Abba Greatest Hits Vol 2 and we would have listened to it around 1980/1981 containing this song. This song's main flute riff was used for Hung Up by Madonna in 2005. A great serious disco flavored pop song. It has never charted on my daily charts since they began in 1987. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", originally titled "Been and Gone and Done It", is one of Swedish pop group ABBA's biggest euro disco hits. It was recorded and released in 1979 with "The King Has Lost His Crown" as the B-side. It appears on ABBA's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 album, as well as their best-selling ABBA Gold album Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" was another highly successful song for ABBA. It hit No. 1 in Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, and Switzerland, while reaching the Top 3 in Austria, West Germany, Great Britain, The Netherlands, and Norway. It also proved to be ABBA's most successful song in Japan, hitting #17 |
| ASHANTI - THE WAY THAT I LOVE YOU (2008)
Album: The Declaration (2008) June 11th 2008 - my #3 favorite daily song for 80 days at age 37. Mary J Blige styled dramatic R&B slick polished song with a big chromatic dominant piano run. The Way That I Love You", is the second single from Ashanti's fourth studio album, The Declaration (2008), but it is considered as the first official single release from this album. . The song, which was produced by L. T. Hutton, has a very distinct bass line with a piano loop but sung more as a ballad. The song shot up Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart almost making the top spot, reaching number 2. On September 6, 2008 it Peaked at #1 on Billboard's R&B\Hip Hop Recurrent Airplay Chart. Ashanti described the song as, a "very dramatic song. I wrote it from the heart In March 2008, "The Way That I Love You" debuted at number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has since then peaked at number 37. It became Ashanti's first charting single since 2004's "Only U". It also peaked at #2 in its tenth week on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart making it Ashanti's fourteenth R&B Top 10 hit, making her the only female artist to achieve this feat within the last decade. It has become a huge hit on the World R&B Chart peaking at number 2. "The Way That I Love You" has been a huge R&B hit for Ashanti, spending 4 months in the top 50 of the U.S R&B chart. |
| THE BEATLES - I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE PARTY (1964) Album: Beatles For Sale (1964) I first heard this song on the US album Beatles VI (1965) which I bought brand new around 1981/1982.
I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" is a song by
The Beatles, written by
John Lennon and credited to
Lennon–McCartney. It was released on the album
Beatles for Sale in the United Kingdom in 1964. In
the United States,
Capitol released the song on the
Beatles VI album and also as the
B-side of the single "Eight
Days a Week" in 1965. The single peaked at number one in
the US; it was not released in the UK.[3]
"I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" charted as a B-side,
reaching number thirty-nine on Billboard. In the UK,
"I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" was also released on the
Beatles for Sale (No. 2)
EP.
The lyrics revisit Lennon's familiar themes of alienation and inner pain. In this song, he is at a party, waiting for his girl to show up. When it becomes clear that she has stood him up, he decides to go, rather than spoil the party for everyone else. Both the lyrics and melody share a melancholy sound and theme with previous songs on Beatles for Sale, such as "No Reply" and "I'm a Loser". The Beatles recorded the song on 29 September 1964 in 19 takes, the last of which was released |
| GEORGE HARRISON - HIS NAME IS LEGS (LADIES AND GENTLEMAN) (1975)
Album: Extra Texture (1975) I likely bought this album used at Tramps (not sure which location) in possibly 1983 at age 12 - This has always been my favorite album by George. Extra Texture (Read All About It) is the fifth studio album by George Harrison, released in 1975 following his troubled North American tour at the end of the previous year and the poorly received Dark Horse album. Extra Texture was Harrison's final release under his contract with Apple Records and EMI, and also the last studio album issued by Apple. Featuring elements of soul music and demonstrating the influence of mellow-voiced Smokey Robinson, the album was something of a departure from the more traditional rock style of his previous post-Beatle solo sets The basic tracks for the new songs were recorded between 21 April and 7 May, beginning with "Tired of Midnight Blue" and "The Answer's at the End". After a few weeks' break, the overdubbing phase was under way on 31 May, starting with "You"'s sax solo (played by Jim Horn), extra keyboards and second drum part. For two days from 2 June, Chuck Findley, another member of the Dark Horse tour band, joined Scott for horn overdubs on Harrison's tribute to Smokey Robinson, "Ooh Baby (You Know That I Love You)", and "His Name Is Legs", while the Foster-arranged strings for "This Guitar", "The Answer's at the End" and "Can't Stop Thinking About You" were added between 6 and 9 June |
| THE GO GO'S - YOU CAN'T WALK IN YOUR SLEEP (1981) Album: Beauty And The Beat (1981) I saw The Go Go's on TV on Solid Gold on January 16th 1982 the day after my 11th birthday and they became the very first current group that I liked. My mom bought me the album in early January 1982 and we went and saw them in concert that summer in Vancouver BC.. I still have the concert tickets 30 years later. I used to play with smurfs that year and they would pretend to have concerts while I listened to this album over and over. Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from Californian all-female band The Go-Go's. Released in 1981 on the IRS Records label, the album was preceded by the single "We Got the Beat," which became a massive club hit in Europe and, later, the United States. When the album was eventually released, it steadily climbed the Billboard 200 chart, ultimately peaking at number one, where it remained for six consecutive weeks. The L.P. sold in excess of three million copies and reached double platinum status, making it one of the most successful debut albums of all time. It is now widely considered as one of the cornerstone albums of 1980s new wave music. It was the first, and so far the only, album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts In 2003, the album was ranked number 413 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005. The album opener, "Our Lips Are Sealed," has been covered over the years by numerous artists, and remains a staple of '80s playlists. It is frequently cited as one of the Top 100 and Top 50 songs of the '80s. Rolling Stone magazine has named it one of the Top 100 Pop Singles of all time. "We Got the Beat" has been named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. |
| GRAPEFRUIT - YES (1969) Album: Around Grapefruit (1969) This would have been a masterpiece if The Beatles had recorded it as it sure sounds like it could have fit on the Magical Mystery Tour album but instead Grapefruit recorded this amazing powerful pop song from a perfect 60's album. I picked up this album at a garage sale in the mid 80s and it became one of my all time favorites and I have "boosted" this album on my charts 4 different occasions. November 22nd 1987 - my #8 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 16 in Grade 12. Grapefruit was a London-based British band of the late 1960s. Their brand of music was a typical late 1960s blend of rock, which they often fused with psychedelic effects such as phasers and vocoders, or classical arrangements. Grapefruit's recording career spanned only two years, from late 1967 to the end of 1969. They released two albums (around in 1968, Deep Water in 1969) and several singles, none of which made a significant impact on the charts. Their best-known track is probably the Terry Melcher-produced "Dear Delilah", which was released in early 1968, and peaked at #21 in the UK Singles Chart, while their single "Deep Water" did crack the German Top 20, peaking at #19. Toward the end of their career, following the new material being written by Alexander (with some inclusions by Wale) Grapefruit shifted from melodic pop to more of a rock-based sound, referred to as "Soft Rock" in a full-page Billboard ad for the album "Deep Water". |
| JOHN MAYALL - DON'T WASTE MY TIME (1969) March 15th 1989 - my #3 favorite daily song for 5 days at age 18 the year after finishing high school.
Empty Rooms is a
studio album by blues musician
John Mayall, released in late 1969 on
Polydor. It is a follow-up to the live album
The Turning Point, released earlier in the year with the
same musicians: Jon Mark on acoustic guitar,
Johnny Almond on saxophones and flute, and Stephen
Thompson on bass. John Mayall sings, plays harmonica,
guitars and keyboards (including a
moog synthesizer). Former
Canned Heat bassist
Larry Taylor guests as second bass player on one track,
"To a Princess," improvising with Thompson on an unusual
bass duet. The absence of a drummer leaves the rhythm rather
fluid and the resulting sound is unusual, even for a John
Mayall album. The songs, all written by Mayall, mostly
addressed his romance with photographer Nancy Throckmorton,
a theme he would pursue further on
USA Union.
Empty Rooms was the only known set of studio recordings by the Turning Point lineup, which broke up shortly after the album was recorded. Larry Taylor, however, would join Mayall as one of three American musicians (electric guitarist Harvey Mandel, also a former member of Canned Heat; and, electric violinist Sugarcane Harris would complete the new lineup) to join him for USA Union. John Mayall, OBE (born 29 November 1933) is an English blues singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, whose musical career spans over fifty years. In the 1960s, he was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, a band which has included Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Harvey Mandel, Larry Taylor, Aynsley Dunbar, Hughie Flint, Jon Hiseman, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Andy Fraser, Johnny Almond, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya and Buddy Whittington |
| QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - SONG FOR THE DEAD (2002) June 6th 2012 - my #2 favorite daily song for 27 days at age 41 living at Ave M South married to Valerie for almost 5 years and Nicholas is now 6. I had first heard this song at this time and learned it to potentially play at Brad King's Drum workshop in June 2012 at the Broadway Theatre - in the end I didnt get to play it. Songs for the Deaf is the third studio album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. Released on August 27, 2002, the album features Foo Fighters and former Nirvana member Dave Grohl as a guest drummer. Like their other albums, Songs for the Deaf has a large number of guest musicians, a signature of the band's releases. Following the breakthrough Rated R, this album is widely regarded as Queens of the Stone Age's best work, garnering near-universal acclaim from critics, whilst earning the band's first gold record certification in the US, having sold 986,000 copies in the country. Today, it is generally considered to be one of the greatest rock albums of the 2000's. Songs for the Deaf is loosely considered as a concept album, taking the listener on a drive from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree while tuning into radio stations from towns on the way such as Banning and the "Bible Belt" on "God Is In The Radio" and Chino Hills, California Songs for the Deaf was the first and only Queens of the Stone Age album that featured Dave Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters on drums, who also toured with the band. He replaced the previous drummer, Gene Trautmann, who started working on other projects. Grohl had been a keen admirer of Queens of the Stone Age since the band opened for Foo Fighters on tour and originally wanted to appear on Rated R. He joined Queens of the Stone Age in October 2001 when he received a phone call from Josh Homme, with whom he had been friends since 1992 while Homme was the guitarist for Kyuss. Grohl admitted that he had not drummed for a long time and added that fronting a band was "tiring".Grohl put Foo Fighters on temporary hiatus, delaying their upcoming album One by One to October 22, 2002 because of touring duties with Queens of the Stone Age in support of the album. Grohl's first performance with the band occurred at March 7, 2002 in The Troubadour, Los Angeles, and his last performance was at the Fuji Rock Festival on July 28, 2002. He returned to the Foo Fighters soon after, initially being replaced in Queens of the Stone Age by Kelli Scott of Blinker the Star before Danzig drummer Joey Castillo was eventually announced as his long-term replacement in August 2002 |
| RICK WAKEMAN - MUSIC REINCARNATE: THE WARNING (1976) Album: No Earthly Connection (1976) My all time favorite piano/keyboard player in the world ever. He was a member of The Strawbs and Yes - two of my all time favorite groups and Rick has recorded an amazing 100 albums of music. May 16th 1987 - my #8 favorite daily song for 2 days on my very first favorite daily song chart started on this date when I was 16 and in Grade 11. May 25th 1989 - my #3 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 18 the year after graduating high school.
No Earthly Connection is a 1976
progressive rock
concept album by
Rick Wakeman. It was recorded in France for tax
purposes.
The LP record's sleeve attributes the album to Rick Wakeman and the English Rock Ensemble. In addition to Wakeman with his wide variety of keyboard instruments, including harpsichords, Mellotrons, Moog synthesizers, organs, and pianos, musicians on the album are vocalist Ashley Holt, Roger Newell (bass guitar and vocals), John Dunsterville (guitars, mandolin, and vocals), Tony Fernandez (drums and percussion), Martyn Shields (trumpet, French horn, and vocals), and Reg Brooks (trombone and vocals). The original LP release contained a small square sheet of reflective plastic that could be curved into a cylinder, which when placed on the front cover allowed the viewer to see the cover drawing undistorted and with a 3D-like effect. A barely noticeable thin colourful arc on the cover (see picture) appeared then as a rainbow keyboard about to be played by Wakeman's hands, in consonance with the album's theme of a creation myth based on music. |
| THE MOODY BLUES - TWILIGHT TIME (1967) Album: Days Of Future Passed (1967) My mother bought the new album Long Distance Voyager on vinyl in 1981 when I was 10. It was one of the first "new albums" I ever listened to. Of course I got into The Moody Blues very heavily and possibly had bought most of their early albums in around 1983/1984. I listed Peak Hour from the album Days Of Future Passed as one of my favorite songs of all time in 1984 at age 13. Unfortunately there is no chart data for my initial listens to their albums and songs when I first liked them.
Twilight Time" is a song from
The Moody Blues' 1967 album
Days of Future Passed. It is the final of three
songs on the album representing the evening, along with "(Evening)
Time to Get Away" (which is actually on "The Afternoon"
track), and "The
Sunset." Written by the Moody Blues' flautist
Ray Thomas, "Twilight Time" primarily describes the
scene in the sky after the sun has set. It is one of the
more upbeat songs on the album (along with "Peak
Hour"), played in a brooding minor key, and also has a
heavy
psychedelic rock sound to it.
When Days of Future Passed was remixed in 1978, a reverb was added to Ray Thomas's vocal performance on the song to match the reverb of the backing vocals by the rest of the band. In the new mix the backing vocals are heard throughout the song instead of only coming in at strategic points as in the original mix. |
| ROY WOOD - INTERLUDE (1975) Album: Mustard (1975) I had been a huge fan of ELO for a while and knew of Roy Wood one of the founding members. On February 14th 1985 at age 14 (grade 9) I flipped through the bargain bin of records at the Kresge's Department Store in Midtown Plaza shopping mall in Saskatoon and found this new sealed album Mustard priced at 99 cents. The first time I heard this album that night I knew I had found a masterpiece and Roy Wood would be the first act to ever debut at #1 on my daily favorite music groups chart on that valentines day. (I declare this to be Roy Wood day). I bought a used copy of his first album Boulders a week later at Nudon Record shop on Louise & 8th Street. I flew to New York 17 years later to see Roy Wood 3 times in concert and got to meet him backstage 2 times. I have posted some of those video performances I filmed on www.youtube.com February 19th 1990 - my #4 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 19 while living at St Peters College for 1st year University in Muenster, SK at the monastery celebrating the 5th anniversary of Roy Wood day.
Mustard is the second solo
album by
Roy Wood, who wrote and produced every track and painted
the cartoon-style cover. It was completed and released about
the same time as he disbanded his group
Wizzard. He played all the instruments, and contributed
all vocals apart from guest appearances by
Annie Haslam,
Phil Everly, ex-Move
& Wizzard bassist Rick Price, and co-engineer Dick Plant.
"Look Thru’ The Eyes of a Fool" (1975) and "Any Old Time
Will Do" (1976) were released as singles, though like the
album, neither made the charts

| DUFFY - MERCY (2008) July 5th 2008 - my #2 favorite current top 40 hit for 2 weeks July 25th 2008 - my #4 favorite daily song for 36 days at age 37 the month after we bought our rental Duplex on Ave O and now 4 months in our home at Ave M South.
"Mercy" is a song performed by Welsh singer
Duffy, released as the second single from her debut
album,
Rockferry (2008). Co-written by Duffy and
Steve Booker and produced by Booker, it was released
over 2008 worldwide to critical acclaim and unprecedented
chart success. As Duffy's first international release, the
song is credited with firmly establishing the singer's
career and is now considered her signature song. "Mercy"
received comparisons to Duffy's previous single, "Rockferry".
Critical reviewers of "Mercy" noted similarities between the
song to releases by
Aretha Franklin,
Dusty Springfield and
The Supremes, as well as contemporaries such as fellow
British singer
Amy Winehouse.
"Mercy" was nominated for several awards in 2008, including the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 51st Grammy Awards. Well received by the public, "Mercy" went on to become the third-best-selling-single of 2008 in the United Kingdom, with sales of over 500,000 copies in the UK that year. The song achieved worldwide chart success, with Duffy attributing this to the fact that "everyone is searching for liberty ... from themselves or from the world they’ve created around them" and "everyone would like to be set free". It is Duffy's best-selling single to date |
| WILSON PHILIPS - IMPULSIVE (1990) hit #4 Impulsive" is a song recorded by Wilson Phillips and was the third single released from their debut album Wilson Phillips. Written by Clif Magness and Steve Kipner, it was released in 1990 and reached #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was the first single to feature Wendy Wilson as the lead vocalist
Wilson Phillips is an
American vocal group consisting of

worldwide hit, peaking at #2 in
Australia, #6 in the
UK, #7 in
Ireland, #10 in

the Year for 1990.
The second and fourth singles from the album also became number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "Release Me" (2 weeks) and "You're in Love" (1 week). The singles "Impulsive" and "The Dream Is Still Alive", peaked at #4 and #12, respectively, on the Hot 100. In 1991, they contributed a cover of "Daniel" to the tribute album Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. While not released as a single, it peaked at #7 in the US Adult Contemporary chart due to strong radio airplay. |
| LARRY NORMAN - NOTHING REALLY CHANGES (1969) Album: Upon This Rock (1969) One of a few christian rock albums I have really liked even being non-christian. This is considered the granddaddy of Christian rock and this album truly is a masterpiece being one of the first records ever to use modern instrumentation and rock styles to sing about religion. This album was therefore controversial by Christians when first released. I first picked up this album at the Frances Morrison Library book/record sale and bought the album for 10 cents in 1987. June 23 1987 - my #1 favorite daily song for 4 days at age 16 in Grade 11 Upon This Rock is the debut solo album by pioneering Christian rock musician Larry Norman, released in 1969. It is considered to be "the first full-blown Christian rock album
In 1969 Norman returned to
Capitol Records, now headed by
Mike Curb, to honor his original 1966 contract with the
understanding that he would have complete artistic control.
Believing that "Kids just don't want to listen to God's
empty songs anymore", in December 1969 Capitol released
Norman's first solo rock album, Upon This Rock, "the
first major label record to marry rock music with the
gospel". "the
Sergeant Pepper of Christianity", widely regarded as
"the album that first recruited rock in the service of
salvation", later cited as being "one of the roots of the
current Contemporary Christian Music"; and now considered to
be the first full-blown Christian rock album"

| DEEP PURPLE - AND THE ADDRESS (1968) Album: Shades Of Deep Purple (1968) One of my favorite albums in 1985 at age 14. No chart documentation for songs at that time.
Shades of Deep Purple is the debut album by
English
rock band
Deep Purple, released in July 1968 on
Tetragrammaton in the United States and in September
1968 on
Parlophone in the United Kingdom.
It was released without much attention in the UK, where it did not perform sales-wise. In the US on the other hand, it was a massive success, contributing largely to the attention Deep Purple would get there and also eventually also over to the UK. Sound-wise, it is more leaned on psychedelia and progressive rock. Rehearsing began in February, after Nick Simper, Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice (as of yet without an appropriate drum kit) had hired Rod Evans to sing after some auditions. Their first rehearsals (Paice having now acquired his favoured drum kit) involved mostly jamming and some occasional glimpses with the instrumentals "And The Address" and "Mandrake Root", which Blackmore had written earlier that year. (Mandrake Root was also the name of an earlier band that Blackmore had been trying to form in Germany when the call came from Deep Purple's management The album was released in the United Kingdom in September 1968 and just as Lord states, the whole thing was not really noticed in the musical environment there. By October, Deep Purple set off to the States, where they were to tour. When they arrived and played their first gigs, attention that was completely in contrast to what they had been given in England, was blasting their way. The success of the "Hush" single was a giant boost in America. The band played at many different locations, including festivals, bars and even at the Playboy Mansion, alongside Hugh Hefner and a bunch of dancing women. The album was from then on a success. If they hadn't been taken seriously in the UK, they certainly were in The States |
