JOHN NATHANIEL WALTERS "JACK" founder of WALTERS CYCLE CO.
Born December 16 1888 in Wales St Peter Carmarthenshire Wales
He had 2 brothers and a sister.
John "Jack" Nathaniel came to Canada in 1905 on his own traveling from Wales to Liverpool, England and then to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
His occupation listed was "farmer" and it is unknown how much cash he was carrying on his way to Canada.
He travelled 2nd class and arrived in Canada on March 19th 1905.
He would land up settling in Bladworth, Saskatchewan, Canada
John Nathaniel Walters moved to Saskatoon in 1911 with his wife and 2 young daughters. He began work at the only bicycle business in the city. Here is the Bowman Brothers directory ad for 1911.
John went back to Wales for one visit in 1921 to see his family for the last and only time.
Here is a map of 20th Street and Avenue B in Saskatoon during 1911. The first Walters Cycle is found on this map at 329 Ave B South
Within a year he began his own bicycle business Walters Cycle Co Ltd. in late 1912. This was the peak of the boom era in Saskatoon and was a great time to start a business.
They would move into their first permanent house during the birth of their fourth daughter in 1915. The 5 youngest children would all grow up most of their childhood at 419 Ave D South (a home that I visited 70 years later)
After their 6th/final child was born they moved to Bedford Road where John Nathaniel would spend the last 24 years of his life and the family would have the most memories.
Walters Cycle Co ventured in bicycles, skates, motorcycles, gramaphones, radio's, keys, repairs and much more over the course of its 77 years in business.
Here is an early ad from 1915 for Walters Cycle focusing on Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Business was great in the 1920's as not only did "Jack" buy a new house in Bedford Road, buy a new car, built a new cabin at Manitou Beach but he also opened a 2nd location from 1924-1932. Even though the depression hit in 1929 he actually was running 3 business as for the first 2 years of the Texaco station it was listed as the Walters Service Station from 1929-1930 (later the Little Police Station) on 20th Street. In total Walters Cycle was located in 10 different addresses in Saskatoon. Note that no business was listed during 1938. Les Walters took over as owner/manager in 1949 when his father "Jack" passed away. The doors shut in September 1989 when Les Walters passed away.
The Little Chief Service Station was built in 1929 and owned by Texaco. But it was Jack Walters who ran it for the first 2 years at the start of the depression era.
John Nathaniel's brother came to Canada in 1915 by boat with at least $50.00 cash (equivalent of $1000 cash today) and was supposed to go in business with his brother. He did work at Walters Cycle sporadically early on but also was involved in Walters & Dearmond Confectionary & Cigars for 2 years. Later he became a Clerk for the city's Electric Department for a decade. He eventually lived at the Barry Hotel and King Edward Hotel but was listed as retired. He spent most of his final days living in apartment buildings around 20th Street before passing away in 1946.
Les Walters with the 5th child, but only son, of John Nathaniel and Blanche Walters. Born on June 26 1919. He would help his father work at Walters Cycle in the 1930's before taking part in World War 2. When he returned from the war he married Jeanne Melymick (born April 28, 1922). When John Nathaniel passed away in 1949, Les took over as owner/manager of the business for an amazing 40 years. Les and Jeanne lived in 5 homes together. Jeanne's mother Marie "Nanny" Brown lived with them the entire time. Les passed away on September 8th 1989 and the doors of the business were shut permanently.
Les and Jeanne Walters had only one child, a girl, Bonney Jeanne Walters born August 8th 1948 and raised as a baby on 20th Street but spent most of her childhood living on Munroe and MacEachern. She married Robert Hoknes in April 1970 and had 2 children, Terry Allen Hoknes (born January 15 1971) and Leslie Jeanne Hoknes (born November 14 1972). Bonney worked at Walters Cycle almost 20 years. She later moved to Edmonton and worked in the travel agency business before returning and working at the Saskatoon Childrens Festival and the Broadway Theatre.
