TERRY HOKNES - IT'S SO HARD TO FIND THE RIGHT TITLE (1992) Opus #747

lyrics by Ross Martin

My friend from 1st year University at St Peters College, Ross Martin, wrote the lyrics for this song.  I asked him if he had a title yet for the song and he said "it's so hard to find the right title" and I said thats it!

In 1992 age 21 I went and packaged up very first official release album on cassette called COOL ALL OVER.  It featured all my original songs and a weird bunch of genres.  It was reviewed in an issue of the SOMA newspaper in 1992 by Brent Pomeroy.  He liked the musicianship but thought the vocals need work.  The album was recorded primitively on a new 4 track cassette tape recorder I had bought and recorded this album while renting at 314 Cumberland Ave

I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6.     I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years.  Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman.  This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992.  I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988.   By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268.   I wrote another 178 songs in 1989.   By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524.   At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery.  I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total.  I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996.

TERRY HOKNES - NAOMI'S SONG (1993) Demo Opus #862 lyrics by Brent Pomeroy

September 6th 1993 - my #2 favorite daily song for 224 days at age 22 at the time I wrote and recorded this 9 minute epic love song.   Brent asked me to put a rush on writing music for this song which I did.  At this time I was rehearsing with Marilyn Faye Parney to go on the road to perform and I put my last shifts in working at Collectors Edge comic shop and at CFCR FM hosting my radio show History Lesson.

TERRY HOKNES - I LOVE ALL BEAUTEOUS THINGS (2001)

Album:  Orange Lucy 1 (2001)

In 1990 I wrote music to this classic poem by Robert Bridges.  In 2001 I decided to record it for my new CD playing all the instruments.   I wrote the extra verse for the song.   Song was engineered by the late Neil Meckelborg from Saskatoon, SK, Canada.    Out of the 1100 songs I have written this is the song I am most proud of the final recording.

April 24th 2001 - my #1 favorite daily song for 121 days making it my #1 favorite song of 2001.

This was the first time I had liked one of my own recordings enough that it was my favorite song and still is my favorite recording I have ever made.

Robert Seymour Bridges, OM, (23 October 1844 – 21 April 1930) was a British poet, and poet laureate from 1913 to 1930

Bridges was born in Walmer, Kent, in the UK, and educated at Eton College and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He went on to study medicine in London at St Bartholomew's Hospital, intending to practise until the age of forty and then retire to write poetry.

He practised as a casualty physician at his teaching hospital (where he made a series of highly critical remarks about the Victorian medical establishment) and subsequently as a full physician to the Great (later Royal) Northern Hospital. He was also a physician to the Hospital for Sick Children.

Lung disease forced him to retire in 1882, and from that point on he devoted himself to writing and literary research. However, Bridges' literary work started long before his retirement, his first collection of poems having been published in 1873.

TERRY HOKNES - IN EYES (2005) Opus #255 written in 1988 at age 17

As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic.    I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25.  But since then I can go over a year at a time without writing a song but really focusing in most cases on a more commercial type of polished song however I still venture into all possible genres.  I continue to play and sing every part on all my songs and recordings.

I hired Neil Meckelborg of Audio Art to record my songs in 2001.  We started out recording a full album at their location downtown behind the Bus depot but eventually worked on recordings at Neil's private studio.  In total we recorded 3 full albums of material of my songs and a full length album of songs I wrote with Marilyn Parney that I produced.  Neil and I also worked on a Trooper hit song karaoke CD in 2001.  I spent 18 months recording with Neil and over 40 songs and over $10,000.00 in studio bills I paid at that time to record the best quality audio ever on my songs.  Neil had used Sonar Cakewalk so I learned how to use it and have used that now for a decade in my own studio.

TERRY HOKNES - HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA (2008) Demo Opus 1100?

In 2008 CBC announced they would take submissions in a contest for the new hockey theme for TV broadcasts.  I wrote 2 new instrumentals for the competition.  This is the one I really felt was strong, catchy and upbeat and would have worked great.  However the voting process didn't give the song a chance as they really seemed to only look at the earliest entries as there were thousands of entries.

H'rattitude - Angie Tysseland Andrea Menard Terry Hoknes 1993 Live H'rattitude
H'Rattitude performing live in Saskatoon in the summer of 1993 with Andrea Menard on vocals, Angie Tysseland on piano and vocals and Terry Hoknes on double bass.
This trio worked together various gigs throughout Saskatoon 1993 to 1994 and released an album titled "H'rattitude.

Angie Tysseland passed away on December 14 2010
Angie's Bio:
At age 3 Angie sang in a family quartet. At age 6 she began studying piano. In high school she trained under Gerald Langner with the Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute Concert Choir. She studied classical piano under Robin Harrison at the University of Saskatchewan where she received a diploma in piano performance. She earned diplomas from Siena, Italy and Trinity College in London, England. She has toured throughout Canada, Italy, and the USA during her extraordinary career.

Tysseland has faceted herself as an artist by composing music for theatre, sanctuary, musical-directing professional theatre, and appearing on regional televisions programs and CBC radio. Her songs have been performed by more than 20 choirs across Canada and are regularly heard at music festivals and recitals by students and professionals alike.

Motivated to become a truly diversified musician, Angie formed the blues-based vocal group H'rattitude with Andrea Menard in 1994. Going solo in 1996, she released a critically acclaimed self-titled CD. This was followed in 1997 by The Refiner's Fire and in 1998, Safe Passage, a benefit album for survivors of abuse funded by Status of Women Canada. She wrote the music for The Girl Who Was Saved by Jazz ( 1999) and Tune Town (2006), co-written with Saskatoon playwright Don Kerr and New York is Big but This is Biggar, (2000) with Tom Bentley-Fisher.

Angie has shared the stage as a singer/songwriter with The Wyrd Sisters, Henry Loiselle, Kerry-Anne Kutz, Heather Bishop and Shirley Eickardt. She received Saskatoon YWCA's Woman of Distinction award in 1999. Anyone who has worked with Angie remains impressed with her artistry. The woman who so often sits quietly at the keyboard is an electric fusion of talent, skill, experience, and dedication.

Singer Andrea Menard with vocalist and pianist Angie Tysseland and myself Terry Hoknes (backing vocals, double bass, drums).  We played a lot of gigs in Saskatoon in 1992 and 1993 and I convinced the ladies that they should record some music so I recorded this 8 song album in the summer of 1993 at Angie's home on Victoria Ave in Saskatoon.

Andrea Menard is a Canadian actress, playwright, and jazz singer, born in 1971 in Flin Flon, Manitoba and based in Saskatchewan.  Menard, who is of Métis descent, is best known for her work on the television series  Moccasin Flats (2003) (in which she played a Police Officer with the Regina Police Service in the city ofRegina, Saskatchewan) and for her starring role as Constable Tara Wheaton in the television series Rabbit Fall (2007–2008). She is currently the voice of characters Sarah Merasty and Kohkum on the APTN stop motion animated program Wapos Bay: The Series (2005–Present).

An accomplished jazz singer, Menard wrote and composed a one-woman, musical one act play entitled The Velvet Devil which opened to rave reviews in 1998. A soundtrack album featuring 18 songs was released in 2002 and the CBC made a film based upon the play which aired in Canada in April 2006. In 2005, Menard was featured on the compilation album, Real Divas - Torch Light Vol. II along with 15 other Canadian jazz vocalists. Menard's music has been used in a number of TV shows internationally, most notably her tongue-in-cheek ode to gender politics, "If I Were a Man", which was featured on an episode of the series Queer as Folk.   In May 2005, Menard was one of the headliners of a special command performance for Queen Elizabeth II to mark the 100th anniversary of Saskatchewan becoming a province of Canada.   Menard's second CD, Simple Steps, was released on December 3, 2005. In the fall of 2005, she could also be seen in television advertisements for SaskTel's Internet service.
