STRUCTURE OF A SONG IN THE KEY OF C

Song is the in key of C therefore:

The chords will be

I ii iii IV V vi

C Dm Em F G Am

The music phone # 221-2221 tells the count of notes/frets in each between each note required in the major scale

This phone # calculation will always give us the correct count to get the proper notes in any major scale.

In the key of C the scale would start with C and give us this calculation

Note the calculation is used in between each letter in the count

Note we did not have to change any notes to Flats or Sharps

So this calculation proves that C Major Key has no sharps or flats

This makes it the easiest key to count through notes and the only key that uses all white notes on a piano

All of these notes become the C Major Scale

And these notes will be the basis of proper notes chosen to make any solo or melody fit properly with the chords chosen

The main chords therefore in the key of C would all consist of the 1,3,5 note of each chords particular key

All the notes found in these 6 most common chords all must consist of notes found in the C Major Scale

Almost every song ever written uses this basic structure to figure out what chords will work with the key. Most songwriters use this recipe :

 

 

 

You take the 1st 4th and 5th notes of the major scale of the particular key and make those Root notes of 3 different MAJOR chords C Major, F Major, G Major

This would be the I, IV and V chords of the song

You take the 2nd 3rd and 6th notes of the major scale of the particular key and make those

Root notes of 3 different MINOR chords D Minor, E Minor, A Minor

This would be the ii, iii and vi chords of the song

The chords will be

I ii iii IV V vi

C Dm Em F G Am

Yes of course a songwriter can change the chords and rules if he wants

So you might find that sometimes the minor chord is turned into major and vice versa

Major chords represent “happy, uplifting” sounding chords

Minor chords represent “moody, sad, dark” sounding chords

When they are used together we create a nice balance of moods throughout a song

However the simplest songs that use only 3 chords will usually all be major chords

 

 

GUITAR - MOVEABLE CHORDS

Moveable Chords are taking one particular fingering and moving your hand up the neck and able to play the same formation of fingering on every single fret as you move up the guitar.

Each chord is different but yet they all look the same.

This is beneficial to songwriters who want to use a different flavor of chords or to come up with different fingerings.

It helps beginner students understand how notes and chords are similar in pattern no matter where you go on the neck.

MOVEABLE MAJOR CHORDS

E MAJOR - strum middle 4 strings (or strum all 6 strings as a 6 string barre chord)

A MAJOR - strum middle 4 strings (or strum all 6 strings as a 5 string barre chord)

F MAJOR - strum 4 strings (strum 5 if you change your fingering)

D MAJOR - strum 3 strings (strum 4 if you change your fingering)

MOVEABLE MINOR CHORDS

E MINOR - strum middle 4 strings (or strum all 6 strings as a 6 string barre chord)

A MINOR - strum middle 4 strings (or strum all 6 strings as a 5 string barre chord)

F MINOR - strum 4 strings (strum 5 if you change your fingering)

D MINOR - strum 3 strings (strum 4 if you change your fingering)

MOVEABLE SEVENTH CHORDS

E7 - strum middle 4 strings (or all 6 strings as a barre chord)

A7 - strum middle 4 strings (or all 6 strings as a barre chord)

C7 - strum middle 4 strings only

D7 - strum 3 strings (or strum 4 if you change your fingering)

Note that most moveable chords are based around the barre chords of E and A since these are the 2 low open strings

 

TIPS FOR PRACTISING

There are a number of things each student must continually work on every week
so the more encouraging you can do the better they will play
 
The songs I gave them they must focus on
1 - naming the notes correctly
2 - finding them on their guitar
3 - choosing the best fingering - do NOT try to play everything with 1 finger
4 - play nice and slow but smoothly so notes all last the same
5 - make sure they have a nice sound - keep fingers in the middle of the frets and press hard

If its possible to practise in front of the computer a couple times a week then you would not have to print pages out and they can flip around and try different songs
All the songs on the website have words/lyrics and chords (letter names)
This is to have them practise strumming from one chord to another
This is something we all have to get better at doing.
 
On that page you will find a link for Ultimate Guitar - which is a TAB site
This type of internet site allows you to search for any popular song title
and then find TAB markings for the song or possibly guitar chords
We have learned a bit on how to read tab already so this will give them more avenues to venture into if they want to be creative

All parents should pick a few days a week and sit down and quiz their student on
1 - naming open strings and the notes on the first 4 frets of each string
2 - taking a song with notes and naming the notes and finding them on the guitar
3 - randomly pick a letter from A to G and have them play a chord that matches the letter name - playing 5 versions of each letter - 5 different chords here listed for each letter
1 - the major
2 - the minor
3 - the 7th
4 - the sharp
5 - the flat 
for example:   A    Am   A7    A#    Ab
Remember you might want to use barre chords to find some of these unusual chords

The two guitars continue into this section. Walloping (a technical term
meaning hit very hard &) the strings using the full barre sounds pretty
good. The lead basically follows the bass. You can do both (like you
can tweak the slide riff with one guitar)

I think i can probably tabascii the bass now, ive listened to it enough.
But ive had it for this song!! unless someone really needs it please dont
ask just yet.. Ive gotten transfixed by a few other zepplin tracks
that where on the album, their slower more melodic stuff like no quarter
down by the seaside etc..
