JUNE 2016 COMIC BOOK MARKET

Analysis by Terry Hoknes hoknes@hotmail.com www.HoknesComics.com

Here are some of the highlights and sales put into perspective. Let’s see what surprises were in the market in the past month. Some big winners and many losers !

Civil War II #1 came in at a whopping 381,000 copies with a hefty $5.99 cover price and a ton of variant covers.

But it was really all the buzz of Rebirth over at DC Comics that got everyones attention and surprised retailers and readers alike with sellouts across the board on all titles. Retailers did NOT over order these books and were caught short on all titles with price increases immediately on all the early June DC releases.

Since Batman #1 from 2011 had become a $60.00 back issue even with a 180,000 print run collectors came out and hoarded copies of this new Batman #1 Volume 3 with 100,000 copies more this time and with no help from a bunch of variant covers. Batman #1 is therefore the only new DC rebirth relaunched title that retailers and speculators went heavy on but all other titles were ordered very safe.

DC therefore had the bulk of the top 20 titles this month with 4 Batman titles in the top 10 alone !

The asterisk beside each of these titles signifies that the books were returnable by retailers after a few months if they did not sell. So even with this fact retailers did not go crazy on orders playing it safe.

Not counting the Batman relaunched titles retailers ordered between 68,000 and 118,000 on all the other titles which is decent but not overly heavy.

Lets go back 5 years to September 2011 and see how big the DC New 52 launch was so we can properly compare sales.

A few points to note stand out on this chart. The launch in 2011 was actually more successful than this new launch. Retailers definitely held back overall. However everyone definitely went big on Batman this time. The only Rebirth one-shot to actually break sales records was Green Arrow Rebirth #1 at an impressive 81,000 which was way higher than anyone could have guessed as that title has NEVER sold that well in any relaunch.

Due to coming out a bit later in June retailers had more time to raise their orders and actually Wonder Woman #1 and Aqua man #1 had the highest sales ever even beating the 2011 orders. Action Comics actually had the biggest drop this time most likely due to the fact that in 2011 it got a new #1 issue but this time it went back to legacy numbering.

Star Wars Han Solo #1 came in at strong debut at 152,000 beating the other Star Wars titles by a longshot.

Star Wars #20 sold 96,000 and Darth Vader #21 sold 79,000. Both titles now get an action figure variant each month. The Star Wars ones sell amazingly well but most have skipped past the Darth Vader ones so they might prove to be popular in the long run.

Star Wars Force Awakens Adaptation #1 sold only 79,000 which is a shame that it came out 7 months after the movie. A more timely release would likely have seen double that in sales at Christmas time.

Poe Dameron #3 sold only 60,000 copies.

Civil War II #1 had a hefty 381,000 but #2 also came out in June and dropped quickly to 152,000 copies.

Black Panther #3 is holding on strong at 75,000 copies.

Civil War II Amazing Spider-man #1 is an off-shot of the big eventg at a decent 72,000 copies

Walking Dead #155 once again is the biggest Image title at a decent but not impressive 71,000 copies.

Many collectors buy 2 copies if not more each month meaning there still might be less than 50,000 humans who actually read this comic book.

Captain America Steve Rogers #2 held on fairly strong at 66,000 after the #1 issue become a hot book overnight and jumped in price.

Deadpool VS Gambit #1 came in at a decent 65,000 for this new mini-series.

Spider-Man Deadpool #6 sold 64,000 copies and will likely go to reprint soon.

$3.99 Marvel 64,630

Harley Quinn might be the most popular collected DC character but she is still only selling a decent 55,000 copies.

Invincible Iron Man #10 featured an early appearance of Riri Williams the new female Iron Man at only 49,000 and a reprint is on the way now that she is the hot character of the summer.

Punisher #2 took a big dive to 47,000 after hitting over 100,000 last month.

Dc Universe Rebirth #1 2nd printing with a new hefty $5.99 cover price still sold a whopping 42,000 copies and still sold out going to a 3rd and 4th printing quickly.

Moon Knight #3 sold a decent 40,000 copies and the first 2 issues are now increasing in price as hot back issues.

Power Rangers Pink #1 sold 39,000 at Boom proving this line is truly popular and has legs.

Paper Girls #6 had a reasonable print run of 36,000 copies but still sold out instantly and gone to 2nd printing proving the popularity of this series and writer.

Wacky Raceland #1 from DC came in at a decent 34,000 copies over a bunch of variant covers.

Gwenpool #3 held on at 33,000 copies.

Uncanny Inhumans #11 featured a ton of buzz with the 1st app of Mosaic and sales went crazy quickly on all covers with a modest 29,000 print run.

Vote Loki #1 came in at a fairly weak 29,000 copies for Marvel.

Vision #8 held on at 22,000 copies while back issues all starting jumping in price like crazy due to continuous demand and high praise.

Retailers got smart with Haunted Mansion #4 and have now raised their orders to 21,000 proving the demand is truly there for this series.

Adventures Of Supergirl #3 got a big boost in orders from retailers even higher than the debut issue. Mainly due to their also being a blank sketch cover. #3 sold 20,000 copies and #4 sold 13,000 so we can guess than that the blank sketch has a print run of approx 7,000 copies.

Lumberjanes Gotham Academy #1 this teamup of the DC Batman themed series at Boom still only sold a modest 20,000 copies and could prove to be a popular one long term.

TMNT Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything #1 is a new weekly mini-series coming in at a reasonable 18,000 copies.l

TMNT Ongoing #59 rumoured to feature the death of Splinter this issue was an instant sellout and prices jumped like crazy with a 16,000 print run of numerous covers.

Black Panther #2 2nd printing had a high print run of 16,000 copies as many speculators knew ahead of time to pick up the Run With Jewels reprint variant cover.

Marvel decided to start releasing a new reprint series called Timely Comics which reprints the first 3 issues all bound together in a new cheap $3.00 priced thick comic for many of their current titles.

Timely Comics All New All Different Avengers #1 was the best selling in the series at 14,000 copies.

Timely Comics Totally Awesome Hulk #1 sold 13,000

Timely Comics Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 sold 13,000

Timely Comics Doctor Strange #1 sold 8,000

Timely Comics Daredevil #1 sold 6,500

Timely Comics Invincible Iron Man #1 sold 5,600 copies

Captain America Steve Rogers #1 2nd printing sold 13,000 copies featuring Hail Hydra on the cover.

Tales From The Darkside #1 based on the 1980s horror TV series came in at a decent 12,000 from IDW.

Fix #3 continued to sell out quickly for Image and go to a new printing with initial orders of only 11,000 copies.

Renato Jones One Percent #2 came in at 10,500 copies.

Hillbilly #1 from Albatross had a very impressive order of 10,300 copies from the Goon creator. Still it sold out and shot up in price to collectors immediately up to $15.00

Diamond had a big sale on Marvel back issues which allowed Amazing Spider-man #1 and Deadpool #1 to sell thousands and thousands of copies sitting in the Diamond warehouse.

She Wolf #1 the latest ongoing series from Image Comics sold only 9,100 copies and of course sold out quickly.

Sherlock A Study In Pink #1 based on the TV show at Titan Comics sold 9,000 copies across numerous variant covers.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #2 sold 8,700 for Black Mask - a big drop from #1 but still decent for a small indie publisher.

Pink Panther #1 was relaunched as a comic book series from American Mythology at 8,400 across a bunch of variant covers.

Black Panther #1 3rd printing sold a decent 8,200 copies.

There was lots of buzz for Lucas Stand #1 but came in at a weak 8,000 for Boom Studios causing a sellout of course.

Spider-Man Deadpool #1 6th printing with a new cover sold 7,900 copies at Marvel.

Jade Street Protection Services #1 from Black Mask debuted at 7,400 copies

Scarlet #10 once again got very little attention selling a weak 7,300 copies and this could become a hot issue with new movie rumours

Con Mans Spectrum #1 from Nathan Fillion of Castle sold a reasonable 6,600 copies at Automatic Pictures

Revisionist #1 is the latest ongoing title from Aftershock Comics and came in at a decent 5,000 copies.

La Muerta Descent #1 has a very hefty cover price of $7.99 from Coffin featuring sexy bad girl artwork and a ton of variant covers making the print run of 3,600 overall quite low.

Dreamworks Shrek #1 from Joe Books is based on the ultra successful animated movie series but nobody seemed to care this month as this book quietly appeared on shelves with a crazy low print run of 2,900 copies - could this be a popular long term seller ?

MAY 2016 COMIC BOOK MARKET

Analysis by Terry Hoknes hoknes@hotmail.com     www.HoknesComics.com

Here are some of the highlights and sales put into perspective. Let’s see what surprises were in the market in the past month. Some big winners and many losers !

DC Comics cancelled all their big selling titles and are relaunching them all next month. In the meantime the new universe was given a cheap priced one-shot which had impressive orders of 235,000 copies this month putting it way in the lead for #1 place. Even then stores did not order enough for demand and reprints were announced immediately. There was a 1:100 ratio variant for this one-shot basically 1 copy per store so should be approx 2,000 copies printed.

Marvel began their big event for the summer with Civil War II cashing in on the 10th anniversary of the original Civil War series and also the recent Captain America Civil War movie. #0 with a hefty $4.99 cover price still brought in 177,000 copies

After that sales drop quickly

Punisher #1 was the best selling non-event comic of the month at 110,000 for Marvel

Batman #52 was the final issue of the acclaimed series bringing in 102,000 for DC

Captain America Steve Rogers #1 was a surprise hit even with a hefty print run of 99,000 selling out quickly and hitting up to $40.00 a copy within a week of release with reprints on the way.

Star Wars #19 continued its slow dip down to 95,000 but still enough to rank 6th of May.

Justice League #50 had lots of hype and hefty cover price at $5.99 but still sold out quickly at 92,000 copies

Darth Vader #20 with a hefty $4.99 brought in 86,000 copies - it was announced that the title will be cancelled with #25.

Black Panther #1 had massive print run of over 300,000 copies and #2 came in a more realistic 77,000 copies but still impressive and still a fast sell out with reprints on the way.

Scooby Apocalypse #1 was a new Scooby Doo series for all ages from DC and came in at a surprise 69,000 copies featuring Jim Lee cover artwork and even sold out due to 8 variant covers.

Walking Dead #154 is a key issue with 1st app of Beta at 68,000 copies selling out quickly. This will be a long term popular key issue.

Spider-man Deadpool #5 came in at 63,000 of the ever popular series that keeps selling out so expect reprints on this issue like all other issues.

Deadpool #12 is a key issue with 1st app of new character plus the 2nd app of a character at 57,000.

Superman #52 featured the death of Superman at a modest 54,000 copies and the final issue of series.

Amazing Spiderman, Old Man Logan, All New All Different Avengers, All New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men are now the best selling regular published monthly Marvel titles (not counting ones I already mentioned)

All New All Different Avengers #9 features 1st app of new female Wasp character. So far its not heating up but she is getting her own series this fall so this could yet heat up. There is a 1:50 ratio variant.

Invincible Iron Man #9 features the first full appearance of Riri Williams who will be the new teenage black female Iron Man. Media buzz came for this book later on and so this book is now a major key issue with a print run of only 49,000.

Future Quest #1 from DC features Jonny Quest and other classic 1960’s tv cartoon characters. A bunch of variant covers brought the print run up to 48,000.

Obi-Wan and Anakin #5 is the final issue of the Star Wars series dropping to only 48,000 copies.

Marvel relaunched Thunderbolts #1 at 45,000

Daredevil Punisher #1 is a new mini-series at a reasonable 42,000 copies.

APRIL 2016 COMIC BOOK MARKET

Analysis by Terry Hoknes hoknes@hotmail.com www.HoknesUSA.com www.HoknesComics.com

Here are some of the highlights and sales put into perspective. Let’s see what surprises were in the market in the past month. Some big winners and many losers !

First of all only 11 comics now sell more than 70,000 comics a month to a North American population of 400 million people.

Black Panther #1 came in first place for the month but it appears there is a loot crate version or similar type of company that may have printed 200,000 copies. This would explain why this comic regular cover sold out so easily as it may only be 53,000 copies of the cover available to comic shops.

Poe Dameron came in as one of the strongest Star Wars debuts ever at 175,000 copies due to many variant covers.

It was a huge Star Wars month as a one-shot Special C3PO #1 came in at a hefty 120,000 copies even topping the sales of the regular Star Wars and Darth Vader titles which sadly are starting to dip in sales both now under 100,000 each month. Which may help lead to the cancellation of Darth Vader with #25.

Gwenpool #1 had a lot of hype but stores held back orders and only ordered 100,000 compared to Spider-Gwen #1 which sold 254,000 last year. This makes all the variants of Gwenpool quite a bit scarcer.

Harley Quinn had 4 different books out this month - the biggest seller was the Suicide Squad April Fools Special #1 at a hefty 75,000 copies. There is a 1:50 ratio variant so there is likely only 1,000 copies out there of the black and white Jim Lee variant. #27 1st full appearance of Red Tool came in at 54,000. Her Gang Of Harleys #1 came in at 52,000. Harleys Little Black Book #3 came in at only 41,000 copies despite having a Zatanna cover story and a 1:25 variant by Joseph Michael Linsner making that variant likely only about 1,000 copies and should be super popular for years to come.

Batman continues to be DC’s biggest selling regular comic at 101,000 and Amazing Spider-man is Marvel’s biggest selling regular comic at 73,000.

Walking Dead continues to be Image Comics best selling title at 67,000. So its still likely that no more than 50,000 actual people read the comic book of the huge TV show.

The hottest back issue of the year for Marvel is Spider-man Deadpool. #1 will soon have a 5th printing. The latest issue #4 came in at a strong 64,000 copies tying Deadpool #10 in sales.

Moon Knight had a huge launch with great hype and sold out quickly selling a decent 60,000 copies.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2 took a predicted big drop from the hefty orders of #1 but still came in at a very respectable 58,000 copies which is huge for the publisher Boom.

Empress #1 from Mark Millar at Marvel debuted at 55,000 copies and quickly sold out going to 2nd print. Movie news was announced. This book has a ton of rare variants including a 1:200 which will be very hard to locate.

Obi-Wan and Anakin #4 sold only 50,000 copies in the Star Wars franchise.

Saga #36 came in at 48,000 and is the 2nd best selling title for Image.

Daredevil #6 sold 48,000 and is one of the hottest of the relaunched Marvel titles with all issues selling out and higher prices now on all 1st printings.

The big Final Days and Death of Superman storyline began in April across various DC titles. Superman #51 is part 1 and sold out quickly at only 38,000 copies and features the 1st appearance of the “flame” Superman. Batman Superman #31 sold 34,000. Action #51 sold 32,000. Superman Wonder Woman #28 sold 28,000 copies.

The latest batch of Marvel #2 issues all landed in the same sales range.

Black Widow #2 at 34,000, X-Men #92 at 33,000, Mockingbird #2 at 32,000.

Micronauts #1 was relaunched at IDW after a 12 year break from comics. A bunch of variants including 4 store exclusive covers. Hoknes USA did an exclusive Action Figure variant. Total sales of all variants was a respectable 25,000 copies. Not taking the world by storm but a strong launch for IDW.

Superman American Alien #6 sold 25,000 copies for this title that has become the biggest back issue hit of the year for DC Comics with early issues all selling for high prices and as high as $85.00 for a set.

Poison Ivy Cycle Of Life and Death #4 sold 22,000 copies but has become a huge hit as a back issue seller with all issues selling above cover price now.

Haunted Mansion #2 sold 22,000 copies based on the Disneyland ride attraction. #1 was a huge surprise hit and sold out and selling already at $25.00. #2 also quickly sold out at Diamond with its 3 covers so its expected this book has a good chance of rising in price here soon.

Monstress #5 sold 21,000 for Image. Early issues are all selling for record prices and #5 is also sold out at Diamond.

Outcast #18 sold 21,000 for Image. Robert Kirkmans TV show debuts in June - if it’s a hit people will be hunting out complete runs of this title.

Green Arrow #51 died in this issue which had little hype - the print run was only 21,000 copies making it a tough one to find.

Swamp Thing #4 sold 18,000 for DC Comics. Another popular mini-series that back issues are now selling above cover and in sets.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #1 sold 17,000 for Black Mask making it possibly their biggest selling title ever for the small publisher. Even then regular covers sold out quickly leading to a 2nd printing. There many exclusive variants which help account for much of the print run.

Fix #1 from Image sold 14,000 copies - this was the first Image title to sell out in advance of release in over a year as Image now prints extra copies but this still sold out quickly and is now going to a 3rd printing. 1st and 2nd printings are already selling for 5x cover price.

Bloodlines #1 from DC is their big event book of the summer. They did not promote it and kept it low key and that also turned into low orders from retailers with a shocking low 14,000 copies.

X-Files #1 was relaunched again from IDW at 14,000 copies with a bunch of variant covers.

DC Comics Essentials Batman Death of The Family #1 sold 11,000 copies - This is a $1.00 reprint edition and may prove to be popular in the future.

Batman 66 Meets The Man From Uncle #5 sold 11,000 copies for DC. This series is now selling out at Diamond and back issues are very popular.

Strawberry Shortcake #1 sold only 10,000 copies for IDW and could prove to be a hard book to find in the future and 2nd printing is on the way.

Grizzly Shark #1 had a very weak debut from Image at only 10,000 and of course sold out.

Over Garden Wall Ongoing #1 sold only 10,000 for Boom. There is a 1:33 variant cover which should be extremely rare with likely only 100 copies printed.

Dept H #1 from Jeff Lemire at Dark Horse sold only 9,000 copies

Teen Titans Go #15 sold 9,000 copies for DC. This all ages comic has been ignored by many collectors but its surprisingly super rare to find. All issues are sold out at Diamond when released and all early issues bring high back issue prices.

Rough Riders #1 had a strong debut from Aftershock at 8,700 copies with a $1.99 cover price and did sell out.

Dark Souls #1 from Titan sold 8,200 copies with a bunch of variant covers and heated up quickly selling out everywhere.

Bruce Lee Dragon Rises #1 sold 8,000 copies for Darby Pop with 2 regular covers based on the legendary martial arts expert.

Disney Darkwing Duck #1 sold 7,700 copies for Joe Books.

House of Penance #1 sold 7,700 for Dark Horse of this cool looking horror title.

Heartthrob #1 sold 7,400 for Oni Press including a cool Fleetwood Mac album homage variant.

Disney Princess # 2 this book sold 7,200 for Joe Books and quietly sold out everywhere. This series is on a winning streak so far.

Conan The Avenger #25 final issue sold 6,900 for Dark Horse. A new Conan series is coming.

Haunted Mansion #1 2nd printing sold 6,700 copies proving the extreme success of this title. Though this #1 is fairly scarce and also selling way above cover so a 3rd print should be coming.

Joyride #1 sold 6,700 copies for Boom and quickly sold out and getting a 2nd print.

Black Eyed Kids #1 sold 6,600 copies for Aftershock at $1.99 cover price and quickly sold out with lots of hype.

Spider-man Deadpool #1 4th print sold 6,400 copies but proving to be quite a tough one to find as well - all these later printings are much rarer than the 1st one and collectors are wanting each printing.

Three Stooges Boys Are Back #1 sold 5,900 copies for American Mythology - each variant cover has about 1,000 copies printed.

Sheriff of Babylon #5 sold only 5,800 copies for DC - back issues are very popular on this title hitting higher prices.

Starbrand and Night mask #5 - could this be the rarest Marvel comic ever printed ? 5,600 copies !!

Mighty Zodiac #1 sold 4,300 copies for Oni Press.

Irwin Allen Lost In Space #2 based on the 1960’s TV show sold 3,800 copies for American Mythology.

Superzero #5 sold 3,800 copies for Aftershock - demand for back issues is growing and #1 now has a 2nd printing. A title to watch from Amanda Conner.

Lady Death Chaos Rules #1 sold only 3,100 copies for Coffin with a hefty cover price of $7.99. This print run may include all the variants including the J Scott Campbell variant cover which cost $25.00 - if so thetn its print run is going to be very small.

Madballs #1 was relaunched as a comic after a 30 year break with 2,900 copies from Lion Forge. There is a 1:5 and 1:10 ratio variants which will be extremely limited to possibly less than 100 copies each !!

MARCH 2016 COMIC BOOK MARKET

Analysis by Terry Hoknes hoknes@hotmail.com www.HoknesUSA.com www.HoknesComics.com

Here are some of the highlights and sales put into perspective. Let’s see what surprises were in the market in the past month. Some big winners and many losers !

Batman #50 celebrates its anniversary with a polybag variant with 3 covers which easily put it in the #1 place for the month at 163,000 copies. Doing quick math that means potentially the print run is possibly 80,000 regular cover and only approx 28,000 copies of each of the 3 variant covers. A rare Signature Edition copy was randomly inserted in the bags. We opened up 300 bags and were lucky enough to get 2 of these signed copies!!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1 was the huge sensation for Boom giving them their biggest selling comic ever in the companies history. This was all due to the hype and sell out of #0 the month earlier where every cover quickly sold out and tripled in price. So retailers all knew to go harder on this issue and unfortunately with every retailer going hard this guaranteed no rarity this time. So all of our sales were pre-sales for this title.

Star Wars #17 was the best selling comic of the month not tied directly to a gimmick or hype and the only comic to sell over 100,000 copies this month.

Superman rarely cracks the top 30 but this month his sales skyrocketed due to the tie in with the new movie and the polybag variants. Keep in mind Superman #50 variants are twice as scarce as the Batman #50 ones based on print run.

Amazing Spider-man #9 was the best selling new relaunched Marvel title at 88,000. Deadpool #8 was 2nd place. International Iron Man #1 debuted strongly for 3rd place.

Avengers Standoff Assault On Pleasnat Hill Alpha #1 had a surprise Gwenpool variant cover which caused an overnight hit reaching $25.00 immediately. Plus there was a a couple store party variants which were only 1 or 2 per store.

Spider-Man Deadpool #3 featuring Marvel’s 2 current most popular characters is an instant sellout and now all issues are reprinted and all issues are rising in price.

Walking Dead #152 - 67,000 copies sold - Image #1 title but 10 million people watch the TV show. This is I still find one of the saddest parts of our industry as that means likely less than 50,000 people are actually reading the comic book. Yes many TV viewers just wait for the trade paperbacks!

Extraordinary X-Men #8 at 62,000 had a decent print run but sold out quickly as the 1st part of a new Apocalypse storyline.

Captain America Sam Wilson #7 celebrated 75th anniversary of Captain America with 3 rare variants and a hefty cover price. Print run of the 1:100 might only be 100 copies and the 1:50’s might be possibly around 400 each including the return of legendary artist Jim Steranko.

DC released 10 different comics with polybags this month. While Batman #50 and Superman #50 had extremely high print runs the rest did not and might prove harder to find in the future for completists.

Detective #50 52,000 / Batman Superman #30 44,000 / Action #50 40,000 / Wonder Woman #50 36,000 / Green Lantern #50 36,000 / Grayson #18 33,000 / Robin Son Of Batman #10 32,000 / Batgirl #50 does not come out until next month but might be the rarest of all as #49 only sold 24,000.

Harley Quinn #26 had a surprise 1st appearance by Red Tool and came in at a steady 51,000 copies but the variant sold out quickly and hit up to $125.00.

Kanan #12 was the final issue of the Star Wars title and went out with only 36,000 copies making this the rarest regular Marvel Star Wars comic ever made!

Marvel has a surprise hit on their hands with the mini-series Infinity Entity which went unmentioned by most but all issues sold out quietly at Diamond. #1 sold 33,000.

Hyperion #1 from Marvel debuted fairly weak at 31,000

Haunted Mansion #1 based on the Disney horror attraction came in fairly strong at 28,000 and is possibly the highest print run for any of the all ages Marvel Disney comics. But still sold out quickly with #1 hitting up to $25.00 and all variants popular too. This one should stay popular for years.

A&A #1 (Archer And Armstrong) from Valiant debuted at 27,000 with about 8 variant covres.

Superman American Alien #5 is holding steady at 26,000 and the first 2 issues are now super hot as back issues with sets of #1-5 hitting up to $85.00

Aqua man #50 featured Mera becoming Aquawoman and this issue sold out at 24,000

Green Arrow #50 had the surprise death of Oliver Queen and sold a respectable 22,000.

Discipline #1 Image Comics sold 20,000 and quickly sold out

Legends Of Tomorrow #1 DC based on new TV show with hefty $7.99 cover price sold 18,000 copies.

Legend Of Wonder Woman #3 - this series has lots of praise but is just not selling well at only 16,000 expect 2nd printings to continue of all issues.

TMNT #56 sold 16,000 and had a new 1st appearance of Leatherhead causing a quick sellout and markups.

Doctor Who 4th #1 - the most popular Doctor ever Tom Baker from 1974-1981 finally got his own comic series from Titan hitting 14,000 across 8 titles.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0 3rd printing sold 13,000 copies which was higher than 2nd print.

Vampirella Vol #3 #1 relaunched yet again with 12,000 at Dynamite across about 10 variant covers.

Disney Princess #1 from Joe Books had an impressive order of 12,000 copies and it still sold out.

Faith #3 Valiant sold only 12,000 copies but a 5th printing of #1 is coming.

Steven Universe & Crystal Gems #1 only sold 12,000 copies so it was a quick sellout and the 1:25 variant is extremely hard to find with only a couple hundred copies likely existing. The last Steven Universe series completely sold out and all issues have jumped in price.

Suiciders King Of Hella #1 DC Vertigo sold 8500 copies making the 1:25 variant one of the rarest DC comics made this year - print run might only be 100 copies!

Irwin Allen Lost In Space #1 from American Gothic ties into 50th anniversary of TV show at 6,300 copies and quick sell out at Diamond and very few retailers carried it at all.

True Believers Deadpool #1 (2nd printing) New Mutants #98. This one sold only 6,100 copies

Sheriff Of Babylon #4 sold 6,000 from DC Vertigo. This is one of those surprise titles that gets hot and nobody notices until its too late. Sets of #1-4 selling for $45.00 already. Very hard to find #1 anywhere.

Zombie Tramp #21 has a very strong loyal cult following. This issue featured 2 different action figure variants including 1 is nude. 5,500 copies for all 6 covers combined.

Wynonna Earp #2 - the TV show has now debuted this 2nd issue from IDW sold only 4,800 copies across 3 covers.

Superzero #4 was Aftershock Comics best seller at 4,300 copies. Dreaming Eagles #3 4,100 / Insexts #4 4,100. Other titles did not rank.

Delete #1 from Jimmy Palmiotti came in at a weak 4,200 copies for #1 from Devils Due.

Jungle Fantasy Vixens #1 $5.99 from Avatar Press had about 16 sexy variant covers but totalled only 3,500 copies.

Grimm Fairy Tales had a bunch of titles and almost every issue has 4 covers so they are averaging 800 copies per cover.

Dark Knight III #3 was the big winner ranking #1 of the month and the only comic to sell over 110,000 copies - so a fairly slow month. But this hefty cover price was super strong for a #3 issue and Diamond actually sold out of #2 and #3 even with hefty print runs.

Star Wars mania is finally cooling down a bit. #16 was a decent 110,000 copies but Darth Vader #17 has now fallen to 81,000 though this is still enough to rank in the top 10 of the month.

Marvel's 2 big new debut series came in decent but not crazy strong: Spider-man #1 at 99,000 featuring Miles Morales. Power Man And Iron Fist #1 at 79,000 copies.

The new Deadpool mini-series Mercs For Money #1 came in at a strong 90,000 which was even slightly higher than the regular ongoing series at 88,000.

Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3 at 64,000 continued its run of sellouts at Diamond so its possible with the 2nd printing coming out that this one might heat up.

Avengers Standoff Welcome Pleasant Hill #1 sold 57,000 copies and included a number of variants including a Gwenpool variant cover which heated up instantly to $25.00 a copy. Plus there was a 1 per store variant cover featuring Gwenpool as well which sold as high as $150.00 week of release.

Harley Quinn #25 sold 51,000 copies in total which included a Neal Adams variant leading a surprise sellout for the regular cover even.

Saga from Image still holding strong at 49,000 copies even at #34. Walking Dead is Image Comics best seller with #151 at 67,000 copies.

Walking Dead has over 10 million viewers of the TV show but realistically only 50,000 unique people who actually buy the comic each month and potentially even less that read it.

Neal Adams was the featured artist at DC throughout February with 25 different variant covers which helped the print runs of all applicable titles. However most retailers did not see there would be much demand and these issues sold out quickly everywhere including Diamond. This caused Detective Comics #49 Adams variant cover to sell out and become one of the hottest books of the month.

Marvel continued to NOT overprint their comics causing almost all new issues in February to sell out instantly at Diamond leading to many new 2nd printings.

So far this has not pushed the prices up on 1st prints but it may happen eventually.

Superman Coming Of The Supermen #1 sold only 37,000 copies of this debut new mini-series issue by Neal Adams. It did sell out at Diamond.

Batman Arkham Knight Batgirl and Harley Quinn #1 - this one shot received very little attention and collectors seemed to skip this one by and it only sold 33,000 copies - this could be a potential Harley Quinn book to heat up in the future.

Fight Club 2 #9 from Dark Horse was the companies best selling title at 29,000 copies

I Hate Fairyland #5 from Image sold 24,000 copies with likely 1/2 of those being the "uncensored variant cover" This popular title from Skottie Young is starting to sell out at Diamond finally and the print runs are dropping and keep in mind that its only roughly 12,000 copies of each cover.

Invader Zim #7 was the best selling small publisher comic title of the month at 22,000 copies. It ranked #91 overall of the month.

X-Men Worst X-Man Ever #1 had a very small print run for a new X-Men related #1 issue at only 21,000 copies.

Howard The Duck #4 fell to only 20,000 copies after the departure of Gwenpool who had appeared in the first 3 issues.

Snowfall #1 was Image Comics best new debuting series at 17,000

Rick And Morty #11 sold 14,000 copies but constantly stays popular as a back issue and the 5th printing of #1 is coming out soon.

Faith #2 from Valiant dropped to only 12,000 copies even with a bunch of variant covers.

Transformers #50 celebrated the big franchises anniversary with a hefty cover price but only sold 11,000 copies.

Devolution #2 from Rick Remender fell to only 8,000 copies. For some reason this high profile writer is just not selling copies of this latest title.

Wraithborn #1 from Joe Benitez sold only 6,600 copies with 2 equal covers and variants making the regular cover likely only about 3,000 copies.

Wynonna Earp #1 from IDW sold only 6,400 copies with 3 variant covers and a month before a new TV show debuts. This could potentially be a hard one to find soon.

Spider-man Deadpool #1 2nd printing sold 6,300 copies - for those who like rare Marvel printings this could be a popular one in the future as it features 2 highly collected characters.

American Monster #2 was the best selling title for Aftershock Comics at 5,300 copies. Second Sight #1 was the best selling new debut for them at 4,200 copies.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0 was a surprise sell out in January and stores were not ready for the demand and did not order enough of the 2nd printing which came in at only 4,700 copies selling out quickly and jumping in price quickly.

Grimm Fairy Tales Escape From Monster Island #1 had 4 regular covers with a total of 4,400 copies - thats only 1,100 copies sold of each cover. There is also a 350 print run variant that heated up like crazy featuring a cosplay cover of a sexy girl as Boba Fett.

Badger #1 was brought back from the 1980s this time from Devils Due Entertainment selling 3,900 copies.

Tuki Save The Humans #4 featured 2 covers including a rare Skottie Young variant which sold out quickly at Diamond. Combined print run only 3,500 copies making the Young variant possibly only 1,500 copies - a potential future hit !

ARH Comix put out the high quality artwork of Queen Of Vampires #1 in a new mini-series but stores did not realize the demand ordering only 2,600 copies. This was the lowest selling book of the month to rank on the Diamond monthly chart.

Dusu #1 from Stranger Comics and all titles from 451 Media did NOT rank on the Diamond chart meaning sales were likely under 2,500 copies.

I personally am very concerned about the state of the comic book market. Sales seem to be dropping on everything. There was very few surprises or increases for any titles or any publishers this month. Marvel and DC are getting used to having comics only sell 12,000 copies of ongoing titles. This is pretty sad overall especially considering the Marvel books even likely have variant covers included in those quantities. Its only been 4 months since Marvel relaunched all their titles and its becoming more and more clear that most of these will not likely last one year.

Lets analyze the numbers more closely for the publishers

JANUARY 2016 COMIC BOOK MARKET

Analysis by Terry Hoknes hoknes@hotmail.com

www.HoknesUSA.com www.HoknesComics.com

Here are some of the highlights and sales put into perspective. Let’s see what surprises were in the market in the past month. Some big winners and many losers !

Walking Dead #150 predictably was the biggest comic of the month with 5 different variant covers. Note the individual print runs are actually quite low averaging at possibly only 35,000 of each cover making these an easy sell out.

Marvel dominates the top 10 with the best selling comics but note that ALL of their best selling comics regardless of having the biggest print runs all sold out quickly at Diamond as Marvel is not stocking any extra copies of their new books.

Star Wars has 4 of the 9 biggest comics !

Deadpool #6 featuring 1st app of Deadpool 2099 sold out in every shop at 59,000 as speculators bought up all the copies.

Batman TMNT #2 sold out at 52,000 which was a severe drop from the #1 print run. Both issues immediately received 2nd printings.

Saga is the biggest selling comic not tied to the big 2 or any multi-media.

New Mutants #98 from 1991 was reprinted as True Believers Deadpool 25 years later and had a hefty sell through of 46,000 copies and even is getting its own 2nd printing as Diamond sold out of this affordable $1.00 comic.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0 was truly the surprise hit of January selling 41,000 and giving Boom Comics a comic ranking high making the top 40 overall titles. This was the biggest non big-3 publisher title of the month. All the variant covers sold out and skyrocketed in price and even the regular covers were wiped from Diamond quickly with price increases.

Poison Ivy Cycle of Life and Death #1 sold 31,000 copies making the 1:25 roughly in the 1,000 copy range which quickly heated up. This is also the case for Swamp Thing #1 at 29,000 which also has a 1:25 variant in this print run range.

Howard The Duck #3 came in with a low 28,000 copies even with the popular Gwenpool 1:25 cover making the print run of that one less than 1,000 copies and the rarest of the 3 Gwenpool variants.

Superman American Alien #1-3 all sold out at Diamond even though #3 did 28,000 copies in January.

Legend of Wonder Woman #1 sold only 25,000 making its 1:25 ratio variant less than 1,000 copies and tough to find.

Invader Zim #6 staying strong as one of the most popular comics from a smaller publisher at 23,000

Back To The Future #4 also staying super strong at 22,000

Outcast just barely made the top 100 in 100th place with issue #15 hovering at 22,000 copies before the TV show debuts.

Faith #1 from Valiant had ton of publicity and hype but still quickly sold out and only received 22,000 in orders even with a 1:20 and 1:10 ratio variant. Valiant decided to ship a 2nd printing to stores at 50% of the retailers original orders of #1 1st printing regular cover. Of course a 3rd printing is on the way.

Red Sonja Vol #3 #1 showed a very strong from Dynamite at 21,000 copies.

Monstress #3 has a ton of buzz from Image but only brought in 20,000 sales.

Archie #5 is at 20,000 across 3 covers which is only 6,500 copies each making all new Archie covers very hard to find with news of a new TV program on the way.

Gotham Academy has been the latest hit DC title for speculators yet the latest issue #14 came in at 15,000 copies.

Lucifer TV series is now running and the first new comic is #2 from DC at only 12,000 copies.

Jem and the Holograms continues to be a popular series to collect but the latest issue #11 came in at 10,000.

Ghostbusters was relaunched as International #1 at only 9,600 copies

American Monster #1 from Aftershock received lots of buzz but came in at 9,500 copies.

Gi Joe A Real American Hero #223 featured a subscription action figure variant again this month. The complete print run was 7,800 across 3 covers making the action figure possibly only about 3,000 copies total. #224 came in at 7,400 copies making its action figure variant also likely about 3,000 copies.

Nowhere Men #7 was relaunched from Image after a 27 month delay. #7 sold out quickly but received 7,400 in orders for this popular title which debuted in 2012.

50 million people tuned in to watch the relaunch of X-Files on TV this month but the latest issue of the comic series sold 7,100 copies. For Season 11 #6

Harley Quinn polybag sales were so strong in December but due to overprinting 6,700 more copies of Justice League #47 were sold in January.

Uncle Scrooge and all the other Disney titles at IDW have started to sell out at Diamond and the latest issue #10 came in at 6,200 copies. Donald Duck #9 was at 5,300 copies. Mickey Mouse #8 at 5,100 copies.

Walt Disney Comics and Stories #727 at 4,600 copies.

Superzero #2 from Aftershock came in at 5,500 proving to be the most popular 2nd issue of an Aftershock title. Insexts #2 at 4,800 copies. Dreaming Eagles #2 at 4,500 copies. Replica #2 at 3,700 copies.

Strayer #1 from Aftershock debuted at only 5,500 sales - the smallest print run so far of this publisher.

Lucifer TV show received a $1.00 Special Edition from DC selling 5,000 copies

Grimm Fairy Tales Steam punk #1 was the best selling Zenescope title at 4,800 copies at $5.99 price

It is becoming quickly evident which Marvel titles are sinking fast and which are likely to be cancelled very soon. DECEMBER 2015 COMIC BOOK MARKET Analysis by Terry Hoknes hoknes@hotmail.com

www.HoknesUSA.com www.HoknesComics.com

Here are some of the highlights and sales put into perspective

Big boom for DC and Batman with 3 of the top 5 comics of the month.

Once again proving no character sells like Batman does!

Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 has possibly the largest print run of any TMNT comic in history.

Harley Quinn polybag variants from DC was also a big gimmick that worked well over 10 titles.

Batman 47 127,000 sold out at diamond (106,000 last month)

Harleys Little Black Book 1 92,000 sold out at diamond

Justice League 47 84,000 (75,000 last month)

Harley Quinn 23 69,000 (58,000 last month)

Justice League 6 55,000 (52,000 last month)

Superman 47 47,000 (41,000 last month)

Green Lantern 47 45,000 (38,000 last month)

Flash 47 42,000 (36,000 last month)

Wonder Woman 47 40,000 (34,000 last month)

Green Arrow 47 30,000 (24,000 last month)

Green Arrow Harley Quinn variants are easily the scarcest of the batch of 30 Harley covers.

Sales seem to improve about 9% across all the titles due to the polybags

However overall this is not a very drastic increase and surely the bags were more than 1/5 of the entire sales of each title otherwise these polybag editions are quite scarce since the chances of getting each variant is only 1 in 3. So for example if 10,000 bags of Green Arrow were sold then that’s only 3,333 copies of each of the 3 variants making this not rare but a fairly scarce comic for all the hype it received.

Most impressive sales debut of the month is the launch of Guardians Of Infinity #1 at 121,000 and $4.99

Star Wars became the biggest movie of all time and comic sales were still impressive but holding.

Star Wars leading at 139,000 with Darth Vader at 97,000. Chewbacca 53,000, Kanan 40,000.

Sales have started to settle down for the new Marvel launches giving DC a bigger market share again.

Howling Commandos is the first new Marvel title to drop under 20,000 copies.

Note that only 2 of the entire line of new Marvel titles is still selling more than 60,000 copies a month that have passed issue #3.

The 2 big Star Wars titles are outselling ALL Marvel ongoing titles.

Deadpool #1 was listed as selling an incredible 81,000 a month after release - not sure how that is possible as Diamond did not have that many extras ever in inventory for re-orders.

Extraordinary X-Men #3 4 5 have all sold out at Diamond immediately proving this could be the first true hit title of the Marvel relaunches.

Deadpool 3.1 is a Spanish special issue which had much smaller print run than the other issues of the series.

This was the 3rd big month of relaunches of titles for Marvel.

Marvel had been drastically overprinting their new #1’s in October. But they have now stopped doing that so the print runs overall of these new #1’s and #2’s is much smaller now and many titles are selling out at Diamond.

Aftershock Comics debuted with their first 4 titles and Superzero did the best at 10,000 copies.

Some big TV property comics had small print runs like Bobs Burgers, Jim Henson, Gi Joe, Rick and Morty.

Black Mask comics both sold under 5,000 copies even with lots of hype.

Carver Paris Story #1 surprisingly sold way more than Show side #2.

Keep in mind most books at the bottom of the sales list actually have more than 1 cover making copies of each individual cover actually much rarer yet.

NOVEMBER 2015 COMIC BOOK MARKET Analysis by Terry Hoknes hoknes@hotmail.com

Batman had possibly his biggest single month sales in 22 years with the huge variety of exclusive and variant covers of the new Frank Miller series. 440,000 copies

The majority of new comics launched in the top 10 have higher cover prices making $4.99 the average price!!

Vader Down and related titles had a big bump in sales.

Both Dark Knight and Vader Down had a 1:5000 variant cover - the first time in history this has happened and both of those books were able to sell for about $4,000.00 each even though it cost retailers closer to $12,000.00 to get one qualifying with all the other covers.

5 Star Wars titles in the top 16 shows a big push before the movie debuts.

Secret Wars sales are actually increasing up to a hefty 177,000 for #7

The best selling new #1 from Marvel are Deadpool, Extraordinary X-Men, All New Avengers.

Batman is the best selling regular DC comic ranking at only #13 at 106,000

Disney titles continue to have 1:25 ratio variants but these have to be getting super rare now that the print runs are so small. So print run is likely only about 280 copies of each 1:25 variant. My prediction is years from now these are going to be ultra valuable books with Disney collectors.

Worst Selling new comics of the month

These had such small limited print runs they did not even make the top 300 best selling titles.

This either is a speculators dream for quick profits OR it its just a title that retailers didn’t think anyone would want.

Exodus Life After 1* $3.99 Oni 3,641

Niobe She Is Life 1 $3.99 Stranger 3,443

451 Media Group

Oddly none of their titles made the chart at all even though I am led to believe print runs should have been high enough to chart but perhaps they were not giving these a better chance for increasing in value over time.
