    MADONNA - BORDERLINE (1984) hit #10
Borderline" is a song by American recording artist Madonna from her self-titled debut album. It was released on February 15, 1984 as the fifth single from the album, by Sire Records. Written and composed by producer Reggie Lucas, the song received remix treatment from Madonna's then boyfriend John "Jellybean" Benitez. She used a refined and expressive voice for the song. Its lyrics dealt with the subject of a love that is never fulfilled and was written as a rebellion against male chauvinism.

Contemporary critics and authors applauded the song, calling it harmonically the most complex song from the Madonna album and complimenting the dance-pop nature of the song. "Borderline" became Madonna's first top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at ten. Elsewhere, the song reached the top 20 of a number of European nations while peaking the singles chart of Ireland. The song was placed at 84 on Blender magazine's "The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born", while Time included it on the critic list "All-Time 100 Songs".

The accompanying music video portrayed Madonna with a Latin-American man as her boyfriend. She was enticed by a British photographer to pose and model for him, but later returned to her original boyfriend. The video generated interest amongst academics, who noted the use of power as symbolism in it. With the video, Madonna was credited for breaking the taboo of interracial relationships and was considered one of her career-making moments. The release of the video on MTV increased Madonna's popularity further. Madonna has performed the song on her Virgin Tour (1985) and the Sticky & Sweet Tour (2008), where a punk-rock version of the song was performed

    AFTER 7 - CAN'T STOP (1990) hit #6

Can't Stop" is the title of a number-one R&B single by After 7 and the third single from the group's self-titled debut album. The hit song reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent one week at number-one on the US R&B chart.. "Can't Stop" also peaked at number twenty-five on the dance charts

After 7 is an R&B group founded in 1988 by brothers Melvin and Kevon Edmonds, and Keith Mitchell. The Edmonds brothers are the siblings of popular pop and R&B singer-songwriter-producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds" (Melvin is older, and Kevon - born Kevin - is younger). Mitchell was long thought to be the cousin of Babyface's then-partner, songwriter-producer Antonio "L.A." Reid, however, this was actually set up as a marketing tool for the group and was actually incorrect.

Virgin Records released their self-titled debut album in autumn 1989, which included the hits "Heat of the Moment", "Can't Stop" and the quiet-storm staple "Ready or Not". After promoting the album and seeing it go platinum, they scored a hit with the Motown-influenced "Nights Like This" on 1991's The Five Heartbeats soundtrack. The trio returned with Takin' My Time in 1992, which included the hit cover of The Originals' "Baby I'm For Real". The trio released their last album, Reflections in 1995, which included the hit "'Til You Do Me Right".

The group members went their separate ways after leaving Virgin Records due to creative differences and silently broke up. Despite this, in 1997, the Edmonds brothers released a cover of Hall & Oates' "Sara Smile" as a single (and sole new track) from the career retrospective The Very Best of After 7 before completely stopping releases under the group's name.

JANET JACKSON - COME BACK TO ME (1990) hit #2
Come Back to Me" is the fifth single from American R&B and pop singer Janet Jackson's fourth studio album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989).

The song was written by Jackson, James Harris III, and Terry Lewis and produced by Harris and Lewis. A remix of the original song appears on Jackson's first greatest hits compilation, 1995's Design of a Decade 1986/1996.

The single contains the B-side "The Skin Game Pt. 1". "The Skin Game Pt. 2" is an instrumental which appears exclusively on selected releases. Jackson also recorded the song in Spanish, titled "Vuelve a mí" which also appears on selected releases. In the UK, the song was released as a double A-side co-featuring "Alright".

    TLC - HAT 2 DA BACK (1993) hit #30

Hat 2 Da Back" is TLC's fourth and final single from their debut album, Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip. The song reached #30 on the Billboard Hot 100, while reaching #14 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks. The song is about the girls' fashion sense. They like to wear their hats to the back (instead of the front) and their pants low, showing that the way they dress represents who they are.

TLC is an American musical trio whose repertoire spanned R&B, hip hop, soul, funk, and new jack swing. Originally consisting of singer Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and singer Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, they found success in the 1990s while also enduring a series of spats with the law, each other, and the group's record label.

Initially, TLC achieved commercial success following the release of their debut album Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip, which sold four million copies worldwide. Their second studio album, CrazySexyCool, went on to be certified diamond by the RIAA, and eventually sold 22 million copies worldwide. TLC released four multi-platinum studio albums before going on hiatus due to the death of Lopes in Honduras in 2002.

Billboard magazine ranked TLC as one of the greatest musical trios Between 1992 and 2003, the band accumulated ten top ten singles, four number one singles, four multi-platinum albums, and four Grammy Awards. At the end of 1999, TLC was ranked as the seventh most successful act of the 1990s by Billboard. In 2008, the group was inducted into the All Time Hot 100 Artist Hall of Fame by the same magazine, at 56th place. That year it was also listed as the #25 R&B/hip-hop artist of the preceding 25 years.

TLC has sold more than 50 million records worldwide, and are ranked as the second best selling female group, and the best selling female R&B group of all time.

THE SPICE GIRLS - SAY YOU'LL BE THERE (1997) hit #3
Say You'll Be There" is a song by British pop group Spice Girls. It was written by the Spice Girls and Eliot Kennedy, for their debut album Spice, released in November 1996. Production duo Absolute incorporated a mix of pop and R&B into the song, which includes an harmonica solo, played by Judd Lander. The lyrics—which described the things the group have been through together and how they always have been there for each other—received mixed reviews from critics, who described them as "confusing" and felt that the R&B-infused production was a "bid for street cred".

The music video was inspired by the films Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Pulp Fiction, and features the group as a band of female techno-warriors, who use martial arts and high-tech ninja influenced weapons to capture a hapless male. It includes symbols of male disempowerment, and serves as an example of solidarity and the group's bonding. It received positive reactions from fans and was nominated for numerous awards including the 1996 Smash Hits! Awards, the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, and the 1997 BRIT Awards.

Released as the album's second single in October 1996, it became their second number-one single in the United Kingdom, and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). It was a commercial success across Europe, reaching the top ten in most of the charts that it entered. As a result of its popularity, the song was released in 1997 in Australia, receiving a gold certification by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), and in North America, entering the top five in both, Canada and the United States.

Spice Girls were a British pop girl group formed in 1994. The group comprised five members, who each later adopted nicknames initially ascribed to them: Melanie Chisholm ("Sporty Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Melanie Brown ("Scary Spice"), Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice"), and Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice"). The group became one of the most successful marketing engines ever, with their global grosses estimated at $500–800 million between 1996 and 1998, and the group earned up to $75 million per year

ALICE DEEJAY - BETTER OFF ALONE (1999)

Album: Who Needs Guitars Anyway (1998)

I started paying real attention to current top 40 songs in 2000 after a 7 year break and this one of the first ones I loved playing over and over again which had been downloaded on Napster which took 30 minutes to download 1 song back then.

June 30th 2000 - my #3 favorite daily song for 25 days

Better Off Alone" is the title of a song by Dutch eurodance group Alice DeeJay. It was released in July 1998 as the lead single from their debut album Who Needs Guitars Anyway?. It was originally written and released in 1998, on a Canadian label (ISBA Music Entertainment Inc.) but was re-released in 1999 by Positiva Records, Universal and Republic

Pronk changed her stagename to Alice DeeJay after the track was released. The track was released to dance clubs and became an international hit in clubs reaching number 2 on the Billboard club charts and a top ten club chart worldwide. The song then became a hit reaching #2 in Canada, #27 in the U.S., and #2 in the UK. It went on to sell over 600,000 copies in the UK and become one of the country's best-selling singles of 1999. The song was in the top 100 bestselling singles in Australia for 2000 as compiled by the Australian Recording Industry Association

WILLOW - WHIP MY HAIR (2010) hit #11
Whip My Hair" is a song sung by American recording artist Willow Smith. The song is the debut single from her upcoming debut album, Knees and Elbows. The song was written by Janae Rockwell and Ronald "Jukebox" Jackson, with the latter producing the track. While attending events, Smith received media attention for her extravagant outfits compared to Rihanna, whom she later credited as a musical influence. Coincidentally, it leaked on the internet the same day as Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)", and the song was covered by numerous media outlets, including Time, Billboard, and CNN the day of its release. Initial reception praised the song's kid-friendly, yet universal appeal, while dubbing Smith "baby Rihanna". However, some other critics called the song's hook "grating" and "a nightmare of a brain drill."

Soon after the song's debut, it was officially announced that Smith signed a record deal with Jay-Z and Roc Nation. The song impacted urban airplay on September 21, 2010. It was released digitally on October 26, 2010. Prior to radio add dates and release, the song collected greatest gainer recognitions on the Rap Songs chart, and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It would later go on to debut at number eleven on the US Billboard Hot 100, and reach the top five on the US R&B chart. It reached the top twenty in several international markets, including the United Kingdom, where it debuted at number two, meanwhile topping the UK R&B Chart. The song's accompanying music video features a colorful concept in which Smith dons several hairstyles which act as paintbrushes to enliven a school. Since going viral, the song became a internet meme

TERRY HOKNES - WHEN I GO TO SLEEP (1996) Demo Opus #1002

I wrote my first song in 1982 at age 11 in Grade 6.     I would sporadically write 18 few songs over the next 4 years.  Starting with my 19th song (Opus #19) I began writing on a very regular basis starting in December 1986 in Grade 11 at Aden Bowman.  This included writing over 58 songs with my best friend Nels Krauss over the period of 1986-1992.  I wrote 97 songs in 1987 and then 215 songs in 1988.   By the time I graduated high school at age 17 I was up to Opus #268.   I wrote another 178 songs in 1989.   By the time I celebrated my 19th birthday I was up to Opus #524.   At that time I was in first year University living in Muenster, SK in residence at St Peters College at the monastery.  I met a poet from New York named Philip Murray who I collaborated with writing music to his words 91 songs in total.  I wrote my 1000th song the week I turned 25 in January 1996.

    JOHN LENNON - I'M STEPPING OUT (1984)

Album:  Milk And Honey (1984)

This album came out in the spring of 1984 when I was in Grade 8 at John Lake School age 13.  I had bought the vinyl full length album and also the vinyl 12" single of Borrowed Time both brand new.

I'm Stepping Out" is the last single from the final John Lennon and Yoko Ono album Milk and Honey. In it, Lennon celebrates his enthusiasm for the night life of New York City, and makes tongue in cheek reference to his "househusband" period. It reached number 88 in the UK Singles chart and number 55 in the US Billboard Hot 100.

The B-side features Yoko's "Sleepless Night

Milk and Honey is an album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono released in 1984. It is the first posthumous release of Lennon's music, having been recorded in the last months of his life during and following the sessions for their 1980 album Double Fantasy.

Milk and Honey was the duo's projected follow-up to Double Fantasy, though Lennon's death caused a temporary shelving of the project. It took Ono three years to be able to resume work to complete it. Ono's material largely comprises new recordings, which she undertook during the album's preparation in 1983, which give her songs a more commercial and contemporary edge. Conversely, Lennon's material, being rough takes and rehearsal recordings, has a more casual feeling.

TERRY HOKNES - HEART OF MINE (2008) lyrics by ?

I have collaborated with many songwriters and my favorite is to work with strong lyricists that I then have control to be creative musically come up with everything.  So in this case I wrote the music, recorded all vocals and all instruments.

GEORGE HARRISON - UNKNOWN DELIGHT (1982)

Album:  Gone Troppo (1982)

I was given this album for Christmas 1982 when I was 11 years old and have a photo taken that Xmas day of sitting on the couch in grandmas living room on Taylor Street.    This was George's last album until his comeback in 1982.   Even without new material through my teenage years George was my favorite Beatle during the mid 80's.

Gone Troppo is the ninth studio album by George Harrison, recorded and released in 1982. It would prove to be Harrison's last studio album for five years, wherein he would largely take an extended leave of absence from his recording career, with only the occasional soundtrack recording surfacing.

By 1980, Harrison had been finding the current musical climate alienating. His commercial appeal had dwindled, with 1981's Somewhere in England failing to go gold (despite featuring the John Lennon tribute hit, "All Those Years Ago"). With one album left on his current recording contract, Harrison decided to get it over with and recorded Gone Troppo (an Australian slang expression meaning "gone mad/crazy") and released it without participating in any promotion, disenchanted as he was with the state of the music industry.    Gone Troppo - with its busy artwork by friend "Legs" Larry Smith (formerly of Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band) - was considered by most to be a flop, reaching a #108 in the United States and never even touching the United Kingdom charts. It became the worst selling studio album Harrison released

Three of the songs from Gone Troppo were included on Harrison's Best of Dark Horse 1976–1989 album: "Wake Up My Love," "That's the Way It Goes," with the title track also appearing on the compact disc version. None were included on the 2009 compilation Let It Roll.

In 2004, Gone Troppo was remastered and reissued both separately and as part of the deluxe box set The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 on Dark Horse Records with new distribution by EMI, adding the bonus track demo version of "Mystical One".

    THE GO GO'S - GIRL OF 100 LISTS (1982)

Album: Vacation (1982)

I saw The Go Go's on TV on Solid Gold on January 16th 1982 the day after my 11th birthday and they became the very first current group that I liked. My mom bought me their Beauty And The Beat album in early January 1982 and we went and saw them in concert that summer in Vancouver BC to promote the new album Vacation. I still have the concert tickets 30 years later.  I used to play with smurfs that year and they would pretend to have concerts while I listened to this album over and over.

Vacation is the second album by rock band The Go-Go's, released in 1982 on the I.R.S. Records label. The album got to #8 in the U.S. Billboard 200, and was certified gold. The "Vacation" title track was a U.S. summer smash, reaching #8 on the Billboard pop singles chart. The Go-Go's were riding high at the time of the album's first release, their future to all outward appearances looking bright. Future problems were beginning to take shape, as the members' drug use and internal fighting began to escalate.

Besides the title track, two more singles were pulled from the album at the time: "Get Up and Go" and "He's So Strange," which were minor hits in the United States. A fourth song featured on the album, the cover version of the 1960s hit "Cool Jerk," appeared as a single in 1991 to promote the band's first compilation album, Greatest. The single "Vacation" was also issued as what was perhaps the first cassette single ever

    GTR - IMAGINING (1986)

June 21st 1992 - my #2 favorite daily song for 11 days at age 21 after finishing 3rd year University.

GTR is the 1986 self-titled debut album and sole official studio release from the short-lived supergroup GTR. The album peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 chart, and the single "When the Heart Rules the Mind" reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 single chart. Another single, "The Hunter," peaked at No. 85.

The group, founded by ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett and then ex-Yes and Asia guitarist Steve Howe, disbanded in 1987.

The band's name, anecdotally, comes from the marking on the studio mixing console that indicates the 'guitar' volume control.

GTR were a rock band founded in 1985 by former Yes and Asia guitarist Steve Howe and former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. In comparison to the two leaders' earlier work within progressive rock, GTR's work followed more of an Adult Oriented Rock format. The band was short-lived, lasting for two years and one album. Hackett has subsequently been strongly critical of the project, though not necessarily of the other musicians involved in it.

PINK FLOYD - APPLES AND ORANGES (1967)

Album: Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967)

Apples and Oranges" (released 1967) is the third United Kingdom single by Pink Floyd and the final one written by Syd Barrett. The B-side was "Paint Box" written by Richard Wright. The song is about a girl whom the narrator meets at the supermarket. It is one of a handful of songs by Pink Floyd which deal directly with love.

Pink Floyd, along with Barrett, mimed the song on their first US televised performances on The Pat Boone Show and American Bandstand. Barrett kept his lips closed during the first performance but mimed competently on the latter show, of which footage survives. After Barrett was replaced by David Gilmour, the band recorded a promotional film in Belgium in a fruit market with Waters lip synching.

This was the group's first single that failed to break into the UK charts, and their US label Tower Records issued a US-only single instead: "Flaming" b/w "The Gnome" (Tower 378). Waters blamed the single's sales performance on Norman Smith: "'Apples and Oranges' was destroyed by the production. It's a fucking good song". When the single failed to reach the charts, Barrett's reply was that he "couldn't care less

RONAN KEATING - LIFE IS A ROLLER COASTER (2000)

January 9th 2002 - my #6 favorite daily song for 32 days at age 31 while living in Dalmeny, SK while Marilyn went on her first trip to Nashville and met Michael.

Life Is a Rollercoaster" is a song by Irish singer-songwriter Ronan Keating from his debut solo album, Ronan. The song was written and produced by New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander and Rick Nowels. It was released on July 10, 2000 in the United Kingdom. The song debuted at number one in the UK and Ireland, becoming Keating's second number-one single in both countries. In the UK it became the seventh biggest-selling single of the year, and was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry. In Asia, STAR TV used the song as a promotional song for the American sitcom Friends. The opening refrain of the song is similar to that of a leaked Gregg Alexander song, "A Love Like That", suggesting that parts of the song were incorporated in Keating's song

SHANIA TWAIN - IT ONLY HURTS WHEN I'M BREATHING (2002)

Album:  Up (2002)

I became a fan of Shania from the day she released her first country single in Canada in Summer 1993 when I was 22.    When she hit superstardom in 1995 I became a Shania fanatic for the next 10 years.  Eventually I had 10 T-shirts and a poster shrine in my office at Eastview and had 3 copies each of all her CD's.    I have seen her live in concert 5 times including:  Canadian Country Music Awards Calgary 1998 and all 4 shows she did in Saskatoon, SK at SaskPlace on June 4th 1998 (her 3rd live show ever!), March 29th 1999, June 9th 2004 and June 11th 2004 (I had front row seat).   She released her 4th CD Up on November 18th 2002 and I bought 62 copies at A&B Warehouse the day it came out as pre-sells that I sold on ebay.  Performing on the road with Marilyn we listened to the Up CD everyday on the road for 10 months.

It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing" is a song performed by Canadian singer-songwriter Shania Twain. The track was composed by Twain and her then-husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange, and produced by Lange. It was released on February 9, 2004 by Mercury Nashville Records, as the eighth and final single from Twain's fourth studio album, Up! (2002), fifth to impact the North American market. Disparate to the remainder of Up!, "It Only Hurts when I'm Breathing" is a ballad that Twain labeled to be the sole heartbreak song on the album. Musically, it lies within the country pop genre while its lyrics speak of misery.  "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing" received mixed reviews from music critics. Commercially, the single performed well in Canada, where it peaked at number four, and mildly in United States' country and adult contemporary markets. It peaked at number seventy-one on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number eighteen on Hot Country Singles & Tracks
THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - CROSSTOWN TRAFFIC (1968)

Album:  Electric Ladyland (1968)

My mother had bought Smash Hits likely new in 1969 and I acquired it and most likely knew the album by 1984 at the latest at age 13.  I bought Electric Ladyland at a flea market in Vancouver in 1985 at age 14.

Crosstown Traffic" is a song written by Jimi Hendrix. It was the second single released from the album Electric Ladyland by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. It peaked at #52 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at #37 on the pop singles chart in the United Kingdom.

Unlike many of the tracks on the album, this recording features the full line-up of the Experience with Hendrix, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell. Hendrix also plays a makeshift kazoo made with a comb and tissue paper in tandem at points with his lead guitar, and backing vocals are performed by Redding along with Dave Mason.

Cover versions of the song are numerous, having been recorded by Gil Evans, Charlie Daniels, Hed P.E. the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Living Colour, the Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra and played in concert by countless others. In 1991, it was recorded by Emily Symons and the Channel 7 Australia ensemble Farmhouse.

STEVIE WONDER - LOVE'S IN NEED OF LOVE TODAY (1976)

Album:  Songs In The Key Of Life (1976)

September 27th 2008 - my #3 favorite daily song for 37 days at age 37 living at Ave M South with Valerie now married 1 year and Nicholas was almost 2.5.

Songs in the Key of Life is the 18th album by American recording artist Stevie Wonder, released September 28, 1976, on Motown Records. It was the culmination of his "classic period" albums. An ambitious double LP with a 4-song bonus EP, Songs in the Key of Life became among the best-selling and most critically acclaimed albums of his career. In 2003, the album was ranked number 56 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Highly anticipated, the album surpassed all commercial expectations. Surprisingly, it debuted straight at number one on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart on October 8, 1976, becoming only the third album in history to achieve that feat and the first by an American artist (after British singer/composer Elton John's Captain Fantastic and Rock of the Westies in 1975). In Canada, the album achieved the same feat, entering at number 1 on the RPM national albums chart on October 16. Songs in the Key of Life spent thirteen consecutive weeks at number one in the U.S., eleven during 1976. It was the album with the most weeks at number one during the year. In those eleven weeks, Songs in the Key of Life managed to block four other albums from reaching the top – in order, Boz Scaggs's Silk Degrees, Earth, Wind & Fire's Spirit, Led Zeppelin's soundtrack for The Song Remains the Same and Rod Stewart's A Night on the Town.[13] On January 15, 1977, the album finally dropped to number two behind Eagles' Hotel California and the following week it fell to number four. On January 29 it returned to the top for a fourteenth and final week. The album then began its final fall. It spent a total of 35 weeks inside the Top Ten and 80 weeks on the Billboard albums chart. Songs In the Key of Life also saw longevity at number one on the Billboard R&B/Black Albums chart, spending twenty non-consecutive weeks there

KATHARINE MCPHEE - OVER IT (2007) hit #29
Over It" is the first single released from the eponymous album by Katharine McPhee, the American Idol season five (2006) finalist. The song was reportedly described by McPhee as "the only real pop song on the record" and as being "a very sultry song about young love". The song was produced by Billy Steinberg and Josh Alexander, and written by Alexander, Steinberg and Ruth-Anne Cunningham, the writers of JoJo's "Too Little Too Late". The song is available for listening via online music services such as AOL and MySpace, courtesy of RCA Records. McPhee has since stated that this was not "[her] favorite song" and she did not want her "song to be something that [she] was a part of."

In the song, McPhee sings over a sultry beat driven by acoustic guitars about letting go of the person one loves because one does not share the same feeling. The narrator complains about how their lover cheats on them, and is betraying their trust.

The song is somewhat tongue-in-cheek in that McPhee describes several qualities about her ex-boyfriend, while at the same time she seems to fixate on them, showing she is not fully over him

Over It" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 48 on the chart for the week ending February 17, 2007. It peaked at number 29 on the Hot 100. The song also peaked at number 21 on Pop Radio. The song has sold over 645,000 downloads to date and was certified Gold in 2008

THE WILKINSONS - NOTHING BUT LOVE (1998)

Album:  Nothing But Love (1998)

March 7th 1999 - my #9 favorite daily song for 13 days at age 28 now performing with Marilyn for 5.5 years and selling on ebay for 10 months

The Wilkinsons is a country music trio from Trenton, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1997, the group comprises lead singer Amanda Wilkinson, her brother Tyler Wilkinson, and their father, Steve Wilkinson. The Wilkinsons achieved success late in 1998 with the hit single "26 Cents", a Number One on the Canadian country music charts and Top 5 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. It was followed by "Fly (The Angel Song)", also a No. 1 in Canada.  Although their U.S. success waned after "26 Cents", The Wilkinsons have continued to have singles in the charts in Canada. Lead singer Amanda Wilkinson has also created several solo recordings in addition to her career in The Wilkinsons.
