TERRY HOKNES - DO WHAT YOU WANT (2001) Opus #1100 ??  co-written with Marilyn Parney

As the new century began a new chapter in songwriting where the focus was more on recording polished songs but writing way less and very sporadic.    I had written 500 songs by the age of 19 and had hit 1000 songs by the age of 25.  But since then I can go over a year at a time without writing a song but really focusing in most cases on a more commercial type of polished song however I still venture into all possible genres.  I continue to play and sing every part on all my songs and recordings.

I hired Neil Meckelborg of Audio Art to record my songs in 2001.  We started out recording a full album at their location downtown behind the Bus depot but eventually worked on recordings at Neil's private studio.  In total we recorded 3 full albums of material of my songs and a full length album of songs I wrote with Marilyn Parney that I produced.  Neil and I also worked on a Trooper hit song karaoke CD in 2001.  I spent 18 months recording with Neil and over 40 songs and over $10,000.00 in studio bills I paid at that time to record the best quality audio ever on my songs.  Neil had used Sonar Cakewalk so I learned how to use it and have used that now for a decade in my own studio.

CROSBY STILLS NASH & YOUNG - SOLDIERS OF PEACE (1988)

Album:  American Dream (1988)

September 14th 1990 - my #4  favorite daily song for 1 day at age 19 in 2nd year University.

Great piece with a super big male singalong chorus at the end.

American Dream is the 1988 reunion album for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Released on November 3, 1988, there was great anticipation for the quartet's first studio album in eighteen years, but all four performers were at various ebbs in their songwriting. The harmonies still sounded intact, but critics found the songs too placid and trite. The title song, written by Neil Young, was a satire of sensational political scandals involving Oliver North, former presidential candidate Gary Hart, and televangelist Jimmy Swaggart. Other songs included "Got It Made," written by Stephen Stills with help from Young, addressed CSNY's earlier fans expressing happiness that they were secure and comfortable in their personal lives yet simultaneously urging them to remember their earlier idealism. It also included "Compass," David Crosby's lament on how much time he had wasted on drugs.

THE BEATLES - GOOD MORNING GOOD MORNING (1967)

Album:  Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)

Good Morning Good Morning" is a song written by John Lennon (credited to Lennon–McCartney) and recorded by The Beatles, featured on their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Inspiration for the song came to Lennon from a television commercial for Kellogg's Corn Flakes.

The line "It's time for tea and Meet the Wife" refers to a BBC sitcom, Meet the Wife.

Near the end of the song, the lyrics switch to German. Phrases such as "Guten morgen" (good morning), "Ja!" (no), and "Gewozei teuer" (unusually expensive) are sung.

The track was recorded on 8 February 1967, with overdubs on 16 February (bass and vocals), 13 March (brass section), 28 March (backing vocals and guitar solo), and 29 March (animal noises). The guitar solo was played by Paul McCartney.

At Lennon's request, George Martin brought in Sounds Incorporated to provide the song's prominent brass backing.

Lennon asked engineer Geoff Emerick to arrange the animal noises heard at beginning (and end) of the song so that each animal heard was one capable of devouring (or frightening) the animal preceding it.

THE BEATLES - WHAT GOES ON (1965)

Album:  Rubber Soul (1965)

What Goes On" is a song by The Beatles, featured as the eighth track on their sixth British album Rubber Soul. The song was later released as the tenth track on the North American-only album Yesterday and Today. It is the only song by the band credited to Lennon–McCartney/Starkey.

Richie Unterberger, in Allmusic, says the song is an enjoyable, but lightweight, country & western-flavoured entry in The Beatles catalogue. Unterberger praises George Harrison's guitar work, which "again marks him as the finest disciple of Carl Perkins," and the guitar work is indeed similar to "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby", a Perkins cover version released on Beatles for Sale.

The original version of the song was written by John Lennon in the Quarrymen days and considered as a follow-up to "Please Please Me" in early 1963, The song was not used until 1965 as Ringo Starr's vocal piece for Rubber Soul. According to Lennon, "it was resurrected with a middle eight thrown in, probably with Paul's help" for Rubber Soul. Barry Miles also claimed that McCartney and Starr combined for the middle eight. There is no formal middle eight in the song, though one chorus and one verse are extended; Ian MacDonald believes those longer sections were written by McCartney. Starr contributed to the lyrics, his first-ever composing credit on a Beatles song. However, when asked what his contribution was to the song, Starr jokingly stated, "About five words, and I haven't done a thing since." To his chagrin, the first pressing of the single accidentally omitted "Starkey" in the song-writing credit.

ABBA - ON AND ON AND ON (1980)

Album: Super Trouper (1980)

I had known this song since the album came out right in 1981 at age 10.  A great anthem to close off the album.   I used to use my Smurfs and Star Wars figures to pose concerts at this time and this song was likely one of the "performances".  My mother bought the album in spring of 1981 but then we had an exchange named Lena stay at grandmas house for the summer and she gave us another copy of the album as a gift.

Super Trouper is the seventh studio album by Swedish pop group ABBA, first released in 1980. It features the No.1 singles "The Winner Takes It All" and "Super Trouper". The album became the biggest-selling of 1980 in the UK.   Led by the international hit "The Winner Takes It All", Super Trouper was the group's sixth chart-topping album in the UK. It was also the best-selling album in Britain for 1980. Super Trouper was first released on CD in 1983 by Atlantic Records, again in the 1980s by Polar International, and in the 1990s by Polydor in the USA. The album has been reissued in digitally remastered form four times; first in 1997, then in 2001, again in 2005 as part of the The Complete Studio Recordings box set and as a Deluxe Edition (containing a bonus DVD) in 2011. The previous year's divorce between Björn and Agnetha was explored in "The Winner Takes It All", and the members' lives in Stockholm high society circles coloured the lyrics for "On and On and On". Other well-known songs on the album include the hit single title track "Super Trouper", as well as the electro-dance of "Lay All Your Love on Me".  Probably due to the disco backlash of the time, the album saw ABBA returning to a more straightforward pop sound, as opposed to the preceding (and noticeably more dance-oriented) Voulez-Vous album. The album closed with "The Way Old Friends Do", which was recorded live a year earlier during their 1979 concert tour.

    A-HA - THE BLUE SKY (1985)

Album: Hunting High And Low (1985)

February 11th 1989 - my #9 favorite daily song for 3 days at age 18 the year after graduating high school.

Hunting High and Low is the debut album by Norwegian new wave band A-ha. Released on 1 June 1985 through Warner Bros. Records, the album was a huge commercial success selling more than 10 million units worldwide, peaking at #15 in the United States Billboard 200 and reaching high positions on charts worldwide. The album was recorded at Eel Pie Studios in Twickenham, produced by Tony Mansfield, John Ratcliff and Alan Tarney.

In all, five singles from the album were released, though not all were released internationally: "Take on Me", "Love Is Reason", "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.", "Train of Thought" and "Hunting High and Low". The group was nominated for best new artist at the Grammy Awards in 1986, making A-ha the first Norwegian band to be nominated for a Grammy.

DEBBIE GIBSON - SHAKE YOUR LOVE (1987)

Album:  Out Of The Blue (1987)

November 14th 1987 - my #1 favorite current top 40 hit for 3 weeks at age 16 making it one of favorite song of 1987.

November 10th 1987 - my #1 favorite song for 5 days at age 16 in Grade 12 at Nutana.  I had just bought the cassette tape and along with Whitney Houston she was my favorite pop star at that time.

Starting in 1987 Tiffany and Debbie Gibson were the 2 female teen stars that everyone including me had a crush on and I had posters of both on my walls.

"Shake Your Love" (Atlantic 89187, Atlantic UK A9187) is the second single by American singer-songwriter-actress Deborah Gibson, and the leadoff single for her album Out of the Blue (LP 81780). Originally recorded in the spring of 1987 for the Dream Tour, the song is written by Gibson herself and produced by Fred Zarr and engineered by Don Feinberg for BiZarr Music, Inc., with Douglas Breitbart as executive producer  It reached number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in December 1987 and was her breakthrough single in the U.K., reaching number seven in early 1988.  Both tracks on the U.S.-specification single also appeared among the six total tracks of the simultaneously released maxi-single (Atlantic DM 86651), which reached number one on the Billboard Hot Maxi-Singles chart.

The music video to support this single, eventually included on Gibson's video album Out of the Blue (Atlantic VHS 50123) was set on a facsimile of a drive-in movie theater lot and choreographed by Paula Abdul.

Deborah Ann "Debbie" Gibson (born August 31, 1970) is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. In 1988 she was pronounced the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, with her song "Foolish Beat" and she remains the youngest female to write, record, and perform a #1 single She has gone on to starring roles on Broadway and touring musicals, as well as independent film and television work.

FLEETWOOD MAC - WARM WAYS (1975)

August 5th 1987 - my #1 favorite daily song for 2 days at age 16 as soon as my family had got back from a 6 week holiday in the Maritimes.  This was the only time I really listened to Fleetwood Mac's classic 70's material.

Warm Ways" is a song performed by British/American music group Fleetwood Mac. The song was written and performed by group keyboardist/vocalist Christine McVie. In October 1975, "Warm Ways" was released as the lead single from the album entitled Fleetwood Mac in the United Kingdom. It was not released as a single in the United States, where "Over My Head" was issued as the first single instead.

The 'single version' of the song, released for radio airplay, is a slightly edited version that is different than the version appearing on the Fleetwood Mac album. The single did not chart in Britain, with only the fourth single from the album, "Say You Love Me" managing to chart upon its original release

Fleetwood Mac is the tenth album by the British-American band Fleetwood Mac, released in 1975. It was the band's second eponymous album; the first was their 1968 album. This is the first Fleetwood Mac album to feature Lindsey Buckingham as guitarist and Stevie Nicks as vocalist, after Bob Welch departed the band in late 1974.

The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 over a year after entering the chart. It launched three top twenty singles: "Over My Head", "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me"

    JEFFERSON - GIVE A LITTLE LOVE (1969)

Album:  Jefferson (1969)

One of my favorite albums in December 1989 at age 18 while living at the monastery in Muenster,SK for 1st year University.  I had picked up a 20 year old copy of this album still brand new sealed for only $2.00 at a record shop a block from the Midtown Plaza in Saskatoon the year before.

Geoff Turton (born Geoffrey Turton, 11 March 1944, Birmingham), who also recorded under the name Jefferson, was a British singer. His musical career began as the falsettist lead singer, and rhythm guitarist of The Rockin' Berries in 1961, who scored a number of hits in the UK and Europe. The group was best known for its covers, and Turton did much of the searching and decision work as to what was to be sung.

When the group broke up in 1968, Turton started a solo career, releasing a single, "Don't You Believe It", on Piccadilly Records. It flopped, and Piccadilly head John Schroeder suggested that Turton change his name to Jefferson. The single "Montage" failed to chart, but its follow-up, "Colour of My Love", was a hit in the UK (peaking at #22 in the UK Singles Chart), and US (reaching #68 on the Billboard Hot 100), and an LP was issued following its success. A third single, "Baby Take Me in Your Arms", was not a hit in the UK, but cracked the Top 40 in America, peaking at #23 and justifying the release of a stateside album. At the time of this single's success, Turton was hurt in a car crash, and so he did not make any live appearances. After a six month hospital stay, Turton had a second record which was never released by his label and a career on hiatus in the UK. He began touring the US, where he was still able to get gigs based on the success of "Baby Take Me in Your Arms". He then secured a recording contract with Polygram Records, who released another album and a single, "I Love You This Much" (later a hit in Europe for Mouth & MacNeal).

THE COWSILLS - NEWSPAPER BLANKET (1968)

Album:   Best Of The Cowsills (1968)

December 26th 1988 - my #4 favorite daily song for 9 days at age 17 playing both sides of the 45 rpm

The A side of the 45 pm was Indian Lake.  Indian Lake" is a song recorded by the pop band, The Cowsills, with music and lyrics by Tony Romeo. The song was included in the Cowsills' album "Best of the Cowsills" (Polydor) in 1968.The song hit #10 in the USA.  It was ranked #51 Pop Single by Cashbox Magazine in its year-ending Dec 28, 1968 issue, eventually selling over 1 million copies and going on to be licensed for use in commercials for the Dodge Charger.

The Cowsills is an American singing group from Newport, Rhode Island. They specialized in harmonies and the ability to sing and play music at an early age. The band was formed in the spring of 1965 by brothers Bill, Bob, and Barry, then shortly thereafter added John. Originally Bill and Bob played guitar and Barry was on drums, then John learned how to play drums and joined the band, so Barry went to bass. After their initial success, the brothers were later joined by their siblings Susan and Paul and their mother Barbara. Bob's twin brother Richard was the road manager. When the group expanded to its full family membership by 1967, the six siblings ranged in age from 8 to 19. Joined by their mother Barbara, the Cowsills were the inspiration for the 1970 launch of the television show The Partridge Family

JIMMY ZEE - DEVIL WOMAN (2012)

April 20th 2012 - my #7 favorite daily song for 49 days at age 41 living at Ave M South with Valerie now married 4.5 years and today is Nicholas' 6th birthday.   I had the pleasure of playing with Vancouver blues entertainer Jimmy Zee and performing this rare unreleased track on 2 different gigs with Jimmy Zee when he toured through Saskatoon in 2011 and 2012.

Nominated for Blues CD of the year by the Western Canadian Music Awards. Roxy Roller was selected 10 ten remakes of all time by The Toronto Star.

The sound is funky and soulful, yet it maintains both smooth jazz and new blues undertones while featuring solos reminiscent of great classic rock. The vocals are smoky, thoughtful, and full of memorable melodies.

Music industry insiders know Jimmy Zee through his writing and production credits, having placed songs with John Michael Montgomery, Aaron Tippin, Diamond Rio and Neil McCoy to name a few. Jimmy Zee has songs in several movies and Jaydee Bixby recorded one of Jimmy’s songs on the debut CD.

The new CD’s featured tracks, Santa Fe, Diamonds and rocking bluesy remake of Sweeny Todd’s Eighties hit Roxy Roller, have garnered early international attention, with adds to radio playlists in the US, Europe, Japan and Canada.     http://www.zeeblues.com

ANDREW GOLD - OH URANIA (1978)

Album: All This And Heaven Too (1978)

November 25th 1989 - my #4 favorite daily song  for 3 days at age 18 in 1st year University living at the monastery at St Peters College in Muenster, SK.  Andrew is one of my all time favorite singers that I discovered in 1987 at age 16

November 1st 2005 - my #7 favorite daily song for 24 days at age 34 living on my own at Eastview and dating Cheryl from Regina.  Andrew was actually a facebook friend of mine until he died in 2011.

Andrew Maurice Gold (August 2, 1951 – June 3, 2011) was an American singer, musician and songwriter. His works include the Top 10 single "Lonely Boy" (1977), as well as "Thank You for Being a Friend" (1978), and "Never Let Her Slip Away" (1978).   In 1975, Gold began recording as a solo artist, releasing four studio albums in the 1970s and over twelve since then. His hit single "Lonely Boy" reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in June, 1977 and has appeared in many film soundtracks, including Boogie Nights (1997) and Adam Sandler's movie Water Boy, among others. Although "Lonely Boy" was the bigger radio hit in the States, his single "Thank You For Being A Friend" (which peaked at #25 in 1978) later gained popularity as the theme song for the 1985–1992 NBC situation comedy The Golden Girls (performed by Cindy Fee for the show). Gold is also known for his biggest UK hit song "Never Let Her Slip Away", which was a UK #5 hit twice, by him and again at #5 fourteen years later by Undercover. Freddie Mercury, who was a friend of Gold's, assisted him with sparse harmony vocals as an uncredited background singer. Gold was pleased that Petula Clark covered "Lonely Boy" in French ("Poor Lonesome Playboy"). It is on her Paris, Orleans, Paris set. He attended one of her performances and reminded her that she had recorded the song. In 1976 Gold wrote the title track "Endless Flight" for Leo Sayer's hit album.

    STEVE HOWE - BEGINNINGS (1975)

Album: Beginnings (1975)

I bought this album in Spring 1985 at age 14 in Grade 9 due to being such a Yes fan.

Beginnings is the title of Yes guitarist Steve Howe's first solo album. It was released in 1975.

The five Yes band members each released a solo album in 1975/6. Members Alan White and Patrick Moraz from that line-up guest on Beginnings, while Howe performed on White's Ramshackled album. The album also features former Yes band-member and drummer Bill Bruford on "Pleasure Stole the Night" and "Break Away From It All". There are also members of the English medieval progressive rock band Gryphon, Graeme Taylor, Malcolm Bennett, Dave Oberlé on one of the songs.

Stephen James "Steve" Howe (born 8 April 1947 in Holloway, North London, England) is an English guitarist, known for his work with the progressive rock group Yes. He has also been a member of The Syndicats, Bodast, Tomorrow, Asia and GTR, as well as having released 19 solo albums as of 2010.   Howe was the youngest of four children who grew up in a musical household listening to brass band music on 78 rpm records. He cites several influences from his parents' record collection including Les Paul and the singer Tennessee Ernie Ford who had Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant playing guitar. In addition, Howe listened to classical guitar and jazz, citing Barney Kessel as a primary influence, "his playing was a remarkable mixture of 'single line' and 'chords', ya know, which inspired me to believe that any guitarist who doesn't understand chords won't be able to play much in the single line because they relate so much". Howe also credited Wes Montgomery and Chet Atkins, whom he first heard in 1959, as a major inspiration. Howe said he took from Atkins, "the idea that one guitarist could play any kind of guitar style

THE EVERLY BROTHERS - SO SAD (1960) hit #7

One of my favorites out of all their hits - played this song many times in an Everly Brothers tribute

Isaac Donald "Don" Everly (born February 1, 1937) and Phillip "Phil" Everly (born January 19, 1939), together known as the Everly Brothers, are country-influenced rock and roll performers, known for steel-string guitar playing and close harmony singing. The duo was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

After three years on the Cadence label, the Everlys signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1960, for a reported 10-year, multi-million dollar deal. They continued to have hits for Warner Brothers and their first, 1960s "Cathy's Clown" (written by Don and Phil) sold eight million copies, making it the duo's biggest-selling record. "Cathy's Clown" was number WB1, the first release in the United Kingdom by Warner Bros. Records.
We're not Grand Ole Opry ... we're obviously not Perry Como ... we're just pop music. But, you could call us an American skiffle group!
—NME - November 1960

Other successful Warner Brothers singles followed in the US, such as "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)" (1960, Pop #7), "Walk Right Back" (1961, Pop #7), "Crying In The Rain" (1962, Pop #6), and "That's Old Fashioned" (1962, Pop #9, their last Top 10 hit). From 1960 to 1962, Cadence Records also continued to release Everly Brothers singles from the vaults: these included the top ten hit "When Will I Be Loved" (written by Phil, Pop #8) and the top 40 hit "Like Strangers," as well as lower-charting singles

    JOHN HUNTER - TRAGEDY (1985) hit #39

I had just started listening to American Top 40 with Casey Kasem every week starting in February 1985 and this one of the first low charting songs I ever heard simply cause it made the countdown so I remember taping the video off TV on my Beta VCR.

Hunter is an American singer and musician. He is best known for his 1984 single, "Tragedy", which peaked at #39 the following year.

He released one album, Famous at Night, in 1984, which featured "Tragedy". He also released a follow-up, More Than Meets the Eye.

  • 1986: More Than Meets the Eye

    KISS - I STOLE YOUR LOVE (1977)

Album: Love Gun (1977)
I do not remember when I first purchased this album but it would be 1985 or later.   I had bought Kiss bubblegum cards during original release in 1978 at age 7 but never knew what they sounded like at that time. I first heard what they actually sounded like in 1983 at age 12.  I spent a full year playing every Kiss album in order on a year long Kiss promotion during 1999/2000 at age 28.

Love Gun is the sixth studio album by American hard rock band Kiss. Love Gun is notable for being the first Kiss album to feature a lead vocal performance from Ace Frehley. This marks the first album for the group to feature lead vocal performances from all four band members. It was also the last studio album to feature the entire original lineup of Kiss on every track, as drummer Peter Criss was replaced by session drummer Anton Fig for most of 1979's Dynasty  The album cover was painted by fantasy artist Ken Kelly, who previously did the cover for 1976's Destroyer.   Love Gun was certified platinum on June 30, 1977, two weeks after the album's release

Kiss (often stylized as KISS) is an American rock band formed in New York City in January 1973. Well known for its members' white and black face paint and flamboyant stage outfits, the group rose to prominence in the mid to late 1970s on the basis of their elaborate live performances, which featured fire breathing, blood spitting, smoking guitars, shooting rockets, levitating drum kits and pyrotechnics. Counting the 1978 solo albums, Kiss has been awarded 28 gold albums to date, the most of any American rock band. The band has sold more than 40 million albums in the United States, of which 20 million have been certified by the RIAA and their worldwide sales exceeds 100 million albums. The 1973–'80 original lineup of Paul Stanley (vocals and rhythm guitar), Gene Simmons (vocals and bass guitar), Ace Frehley (lead guitar) and Peter Criss (drums) is the most successful

    KLAATU - SILLY BOYS (1978)

Album:  Sir Army Suit (1978)

I discovered Klaatu on March 21st 1985 (Klaatu day) age 14 in Grade 9 with the album Hope.  I quickly went out and bought all their albums in 1985.  I might have bought them all at Nudon Book & Records shop at 1111 Louise Ave across from McDonalds.  (I bought at least 100 albums there between 1984 and 1988.  Unfortunately I had no daily song charts during the first run of promotion in 1985 to show my first appreciation for the individual songs.

March 22nd 1989 - my #1 favorite daily song for 4 days at age 18 the year after graduating high school celebrating Klaatu day 4th anniversary.

Silly Boys" is a song by the Canadian band Klaatu, which appeared on their third album, Sir Army Suit. "Silly Boys" was composed primarily of a backmasked version of Klaatu's early song, "Anus Of Uranus", as well as a brief backmasked fragment of the instrumental ending of "Little Neutrino".

Klaatu placed a robot-sounding vocoder over approximately half of the vocals, leaving every other verse, being sung backwards, unedited. When the track is backmasked, one hears the lyrics of an earlier Klaatu song, "Anus of Uranus", as well as a fragment of the instrumental conclusion of "Little Neutrino". Both tracks are sourced from the group's earlier album, "3:47 EST".

The lyrics printed on the lyric sheet were written to portray a literal interpretation of the lyrics, as they would normally be heard, without the assistance of backmasking. The lyrics were also printed backwards, which led some listeners to backmask the song, to discover the backmasked tracks, of which this song is composed.

    KISS - CHARISMA (1979)

Album: Dynasty (1979)
I do not remember when I first purchased this album but it would be likely in 1984 at age 13 - I really loved this album as a young teenager.   I had bought Kiss bubblegum cards during original release in 1978 at age 7 but never knew what they sounded like at that time. I first heard what they actually sounded like in 1983 at age 12 when I saw the video for I Was Made For Loving You on Good Rocking Tonight on CBC in Canada.  I spent a full year playing every Kiss album in order on a year long Kiss promotion during 1999/2000 at age 28.

Dynasty is the seventh studio album by American hard rock band Kiss. It was produced by Vini Poncia and released on Casablanca Records on May 23, 1979. Dynasty marked the first time that the original four members of Kiss did not all appear together for the entire album. In later interviews, the band admitted that they started to listen to outsiders about what direction the music should go around the time of Dynasty.

The album and the following tour, were billed as the "Return of Kiss". Kiss had not released a studio album since 1977's Love Gun. Instead, Kiss released their second live album and each member had recorded eponymous solo albums, which were simultaneously released on September 18, 1978. The reception was mixed, with Frehley's album being widely regarded as the best and Criss' album the worst.

LARRY NORMAN - FORGET YOUR HEXAGRAM (1969)

June 19th 1987 - my #6 favorite song for 1 day at age 16 just finishing Grade 11 living on Ruth Street

One of a few christian rock albums I have really liked even being non-christian. This is considered the granddaddy of Christian rock and this album truly is a masterpiece being one of the first records ever to use modern instrumentation and rock styles to sing about religion. This album was therefore controversial by Christians when first released.

I first picked up this album at the Frances Morrison Library book/record sale and bought the album for 10 cents in 1987 not knowing what it sounded like but just knew it was a late 1960's album which is what attracted me to it.

Upon This Rock is the debut solo album by pioneering Christian rock musician Larry Norman, released in 1969. It is considered to be "the first full-blown Christian rock album

In 1969 Norman returned to Capitol Records, now headed by Mike Curb, to honor his original 1966 contract with the understanding that he would have complete artistic control. Believing that "Kids just don't want to listen to God's empty songs anymore", in December 1969 Capitol released Norman's first solo rock album, Upon This Rock, "the first major label record to marry rock music with the gospel". "the Sergeant Pepper of Christianity", widely regarded as "the album that first recruited rock in the service of salvation", later cited as being "one of the roots of the current Contemporary Christian Music"; and now considered to be the first full-blown Christian rock album".
    MOUNTAIN - TAUNTA (1971)

Album:  Nantucket Sleighride (1971)

My mother bought their first album Mountain Climbing new in 1970 and I always had it growing up but had never listened to it until 1987 at age 16 in Grade 11.   I think it was Mountain that made me appreciate hard rock for the first time.  I picked up this CD sometime in the 90's.

Mountain is an American rock band that formed in Long Island, New York in 1969. Originally comprising vocalist and guitarist Leslie West, bassist/vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight and drummer N. D. Smart, the band broke up in 1972 and has reunited frequently since 1973, remaining active today. Best known for the song "Mississippi Queen", Mountain is one of many bands to be commonly credited as having influenced the development of heavy metal music in the 1970s

Mountain was received enthusiastically by the festival audience but the band did not appear in the film of the event, nor was their performance included on volume 1 of the festival's live album. Their performances of "Blood of the Sun" (from West's album) and "Theme for an Imaginary Western" (a song they planned to record for Climbing and co-written by former Cream bassist Jack Bruce) did appear on the second volume of Woodstock performances.   Soon after Woodstock, Smart was replaced by Canadian Laurence "Corky" Laing, who was the drummer on the classic Climbing!, which was released in March 1970. It led off with what became the band's signature song, "Mississippi Queen", which reached #21 in the Billboard Hot 100, and was featured in the 1971 cult film Vanishing Point, while the album reached #17 in the Billboard Top 200. Mountain began a hectic touring schedule in the middle of which they recorded a followup album, Nantucket Sleighride, released in January 1971. This album reached #16 but failed to yield a hit single. The title track was used in the UK as the theme to ITV's Sunday political program Weekend World. After these early releases the band continued to receive a certain measure of critical acclaim but never again achieved great commercial success.
