| FILTER - TAKE A PICTURE (2000) hit #12
Take a Picture" was the second single from
Filter's
Title of Record. The song became a major hit during
the start of 2000. It was the band's first departure from
industrial rock.
The song's lush synthesized wall of sound and its lyrics, revolving around the chorus: "Could you take my picture? / 'Cause I won't remember", lends it a surreal and dreamlike aura. Filter's frontman, and founding member Richard Patrick has said that the song is about him getting drunk on an airplane, taking off all of his clothes, and fighting with the flight attendants who tried to stop him. This would account for the introductory, and later-repeated, lyrics: "Awake on my airplane, awake on my airplane...my skin is bare, my skin is theirs." "Take a Picture" also features Patrick's petulant taunt: Hey, Dad, what do you think about your son now? Patrick's father was offended by this line, but Patrick explained to his father that each time he sings the line it has a different meaning because Patrick changes the tone in which he delivers the line each time it's sung. A music video, directed by David Meyers, featured the band in a dreamlike sequence taking place in four different areas; a room being flooded by water, under the ocean with no scuba gear on, on a tiny rowboat in the middle of the ocean, and on the roof of a tiny cottage. The song crossed over to Top 40 radio (it reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 25, 2000, after reaching the Top 40 on December 14, 1999). It hit #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart on January 25. Remixes were provided by Club 69. The song has been featured in numerous motion pictures, including The Girl Next Door, Saving Grace, Little Nicky and Pay It Forward. It is also a playable track in the music video game Band Hero. |
| KEITH URBAN - WHO WOULDN'T WANNA BE ME (2003) hit #30 (#1 country) Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me" is the title of a song co-written and recorded by Australian country music singer-songwriter Keith Urban. It was released in July 2003 as the third single from his 2002 album Golden Road. The song became his third number-one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and peaked at number 30 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Keith Lionel Urban (born 26 October 1967) is a
New Zealand-Australian
country music singer, songwriter and guitarist whose
commercial success has been mainly in the
United States and
Australia. Urban was born in New Zealand and began his
career in Australia at an early age. In 1991, he released a
self-titled debut album, and charted four singles in
Australia before moving to the United States in 1992.
Eventually, Urban found work as a session guitarist before
starting a band known as
The Ranch, which recorded one studio album on
Capitol Records and charted two singles on the
Billboard country charts.
Still signed to Capitol, he made his solo American debut in 1999 with the album Keith Urban. Certified platinum in the U.S., it also produced his first American Number One in "But for the Grace of God". His breakthrough hit was the Number One "Somebody Like You", from his second Capitol album Golden Road (2002). This album also earned Urban his first Grammy Award win for "You'll Think of Me", its fourth single and the fourth Billboard Number One of his career. 2004's Be Here, his third American album, produced three more Number Ones, and became his highest-selling album, earning 4× Multi-Platinum certification. Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing was released in 2006, producing the record-setting No.17 country chart debut of "Once in a Lifetime", as well as Urban's second Grammy for the song "Stupid Boy", while a Greatest Hits package entitled Greatest Hits: 18 Kids followed in late 2007. This album was re-released a year later as Greatest Hits: 19 Kids with one track added: the number one "You Look Good in My Shirt", which he had previously recorded on Golden Road. Additional albums Defying Gravity and Get Closer were released on 31 March 2009 and 16 November 2010, respectively. |
| SARA EVANS - SUDS IN THE BUCKET (2004) hit #33 (#1 country)
Suds in the Bucket" is the title of a song recorded
by country singer
Sara Evans. It was released in May 2004 as the third
single for her album
Restless. It became her third number-one single on
the US Country charts, and her first since "Born
to Fly" in early 2001. It was certified
Gold by the
RIAA on November 18, 2005.
The song appears in the game Karaoke Revolution Country, and is included in the Rock Band: Country Track Pack. and will appear as downloadable content for the Rock Band series. The song is up-tempo and tells the story of a girl who runs off to Las Vegas one day with her boyfriend, leaving the "suds in the bucket and the clothes hangin' out on the line."
Sara Lynn Evans (born February 5, 1971)
is an American
country singer and songwriter. For her
entire career, she has been signed to
RCA Records Nashville.
Evans' debut, Three Chords and the Truth, did not produce a Top 40 hit on the Hot Country Songs charts. She followed this up with No Place That Far (1998), Born to Fly (2000), Restless (2003) and Real Fine Place (2005). No Place That Far received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), while the other three albums all were certified platinum. These discs include the number 1 singles "No Place That Far", "Born to Fly", "Suds in the Bucket" and "A Real Fine Place to Start", plus the top 10 hits "I Could Not Ask for More" (a cover of the Edwin McCain song), "I Keep Looking", "Perfect" and "Cheatin'". Her 2007 Greatest Hits included the top 20 hits "You'll Always Be My Baby" and "As If". Stronger (2011) included her fifth number 1 hit, "A Little Bit Stronger", which was co-written by Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum. Evans has also won one award each from Billboard, the Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association, Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) and a Dove Award. |
| KT TUNSTALL - BLACK HORSE AND A CHERRY TREE (2006) hit #20
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" (commonly written
with an
ampersand) is a song by
Scottish
singer-songwriter
KT Tunstall and is featured on her
debut album,
Eye to the Telescope. It was released on 21 February
2005 as the lead
single from the album, charting at #28 in the
UK Singles Chart. It is one of many songs that reuses
the famous
Bo Diddley beat from the influential 1955 song of the
same name.
The song is a playable track in the music video games Band Hero and Dancing with the Stars: We Dance!
In the United Kingdom, the single peaked at #28 in its first
week and dropped out of the Top 75 in three weeks.
In the United States, "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" was initially in the bottom half of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Only after Katharine McPhee sang the song on American Idol (in the 5th season) as part of a Billboard charts-based song selection did the tune rise rapidly in popularity; it jumped 56 positions on the U.S. Hot 100 chart, going from #79 to #23, and then moving to #20, becoming Tunstall's first single (and only, to date) to appear on that chart's Top 20. McPhee would go on to sing the song again in her final performance show on 23 May 2006, finishing second to Taylor Hicks. Megan Joy also sang this song on American Idol in Season 8. |
| THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS - MOVE ALONG (2006) hit #15 Move Along" is the title track and second single taken from The All-American Rejects' second studio album of the same name. "Move Along" is the band's most enduring single. The track stayed in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 50 for 39 weeks because of the amount of time it took to surface. It was released in February and peaked at #1 in TRL but didn't chart until late March, since their single "Dirty Little Secret" was still performing on the Billboard charts. As of March 2009, "Move Along" had sold over two million digital downloads in the United States. The track is an anti-suicide message song about believing in oneself and persevering in the face of problems.
According to
Billboard Magazine, "Move Along" was rated the #21
best song of 2006 on the "Year-End Hot 100 singles of 2006".
Though it didn't place as high on the Hot 100
singles chart as "Dirty Little Secret", it placed much
higher on the year-end chart due to its durability, spending
many weeks on the Hot 100. Also on
Blender Magazine's "The 100 Greatest Songs of 2005",
"Move Along" was rated #84. "Move Along" was also a nominee
for state rock song of Oklahoma, but lost to the
Flaming Lips.
The band performed the song at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. The video for "Move Along" won the award for "Best Group Video" at that ceremony The All-American Rejects is an American alternative rock band formed in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1999. The band consists of lead vocalist and bass guitarist Tyson Ritter, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Nick Wheeler, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Mike Kennerty, and drummer and percussionist Chris Gaylor. |
| THE BEATLES - SUN KING (1969) Album: Abbey Road (1969)
Sun King" is a song written primarily by
John Lennon, but credited to
Lennon–McCartney and recorded by
The Beatles for their 1969 album,
Abbey Road. It is the second song of the B-side's
climactic medley. Like other tracks on the album
(notably "Because")
the song features lush multi-tracked vocal harmonies,
provided by Lennon,
Paul McCartney and
George Harrison. The working title was "Here Comes the
Sun King", but was shortened to "Sun King" to avoid
confusion with Harrison's "Here
Comes the Sun". The song slowly fades in from the swamp
sounds at the end of "You
Never Give Me Your Money". At the end of the song, the
music stops abruptly and a drum fill by
Ringo Starr leads into the next track, "Mean
Mr. Mustard".
The faux mixing of Romance languages occurs in the last three lines of the song. In 1969, Lennon was interviewed about these lyrics and said, "We just started joking, you know, singing 'cuando para mucho.' So we just made up... Paul knew a few Spanish words from school, you know. So we just strung any Spanish words that sounded vaguely like something. And of course we got 'chicka ferdy' in. That's a Liverpool expression. Just like sort – it doesn't mean anything to me but (childish taunting) 'na-na, na-na-na!'" Another noted aspect of the song is its use of cross-channel phasing, or stereo panning and fading. The lead guitar line slowly moves from the right to left channel and then back. This occurs in the beginning of the song, and then again at the end. In an interview in 1987, Harrison said that the recording was inspired by Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross". "At the time, 'Albatross' (by Fleetwood Mac) was out, with all the reverb on guitar. So we said, 'Let's be Fleetwood Mac doing Albatross, just to get going.' It never really sounded like Fleetwood Mac... but that was the point of origin |
| ABBA - KING HAS LOST HIS CROWN (1979) Album: Voulez Vous (1979) Voulez-Vous is the sixth studio album by Swedish pop group ABBA, released in 1979. It was the first ABBA album to be recorded at Polar Studios in Stockholm, and the only ABBA album to include a studio recording made outside Sweden. Some of the songs were secretly written and demoed at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and the title track was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami. Voulez-Vous was first released on CD in 1984. The album has been digitally remastered and reissued four times; first in 1997, then in 2001 and in 2005 as part of the The Complete Studio Recordings box set, and yet again in 2010 for the Voulez-Vous Deluxe Edition. ABBA was a Swedish pop/rock/disco group formed in Stockholm in 1972, comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. ABBA is an acronym of the first letters of the band members' first names and is sometimes stylized as the registered trademark ᗅᗺᗷᗅ. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of pop music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. They are also known for winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, giving Sweden its first victory in the history of the contest and being the most successful group ever to take part in the contest. |
| THE BEATLES - CHAINS (1963) Album: Please Please Me (1963)
Chains" is a song composed by the
Brill Building husband-and-wife songwriting team
Gerry Goffin and
Carole King and was a major hit for
Little Eva’s backing singers,
The Cookies (#17 U.S. Pop, #7 R&B) and later
covered by
The Beatles.
The single by the Cookies was a popular cover song for Liverpool bands after its release in November 1962, and was included briefly in The Beatles' live sets. They recorded it on February 11, 1963 for inclusion on their British debut, Please Please Me. Music critic Ian MacDonald criticized The Beatles' performance, writing that it was "slightly out-of-tune" and "lacked spontaneity. |
| BASIA - YEARNING (1994) Album: The Sweetest Illusion (1994) The Sweetest Illusion is the third studio album by Polish jazz and pop singer–songwriter Basia, released in the United States on May 3, 1994 by Epic Records. It was her final major-label release of the 1990s, though a live album and a greatest hits collection followed. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on December 14, 1994 for sales in excess of 500,000 units within the U.S., and earned Basia her first (and so far only) chart-topper on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart with "Drunk on Love". Basia Trzetrzelewska (born September 30, 1954) is a Polish singer-songwriter and record producer. She established a successful international recording career featuring characteristically Latin-flavoured jazz-pop crossover songs during the late 1980s and early 1990s and the late 2000s and 2010s, particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan. She is noted for possessing a wide vocal range, approximately three octaves that span from contralto to soprano tessituras, as well as her singular jazz-influenced stylings and multi-layered harmonies |
| THE BEACH BOYS - SHE'S GOING BALD (1967) Album: Smiley Smile (1967) I picked this album up at a flea market downtown Vancouver on a holiday there in summer 1986. It has always been my favorite Beach Boys album.
Smiley Smile is the twelfth studio album by
American
rock band
The Beach Boys, released on September 18, 1967 on
Brother Records and
Capitol. Released in the place of the much-touted
Smile, Smiley Smile is widely considered to
be under-produced, and it was received with indifference and
confusion upon its unveiling.
However, Smiley Smile has managed to grow in stature
over the years to become a cult favorite in The Beach Boys'
recorded catalog.
It is considered by many to be a decisive record in the context of the period of its release. The successful single "Good Vibrations" had been released almost a year earlier and great expectations were placed on the original upcoming album Smile. When Smile failed to materialize, in early 1967, the group faced declining popularity in the US in the face of the summer of love and the emerging psychedelic movement. Having come up with no new material by mid-1967 and after failing to appear at the Monterey International Pop Festival the pressure was immense for the group to release new material and remain relevant. Smiley Smile was rapidly recorded and released but its unconventional and dark sound was met with neither popular nor critical acclaim at the time.

| 10cc - I'M MANDY, FLY ME (1976) hit #6 in UK 10cc are an English art rock band who achieved their greatest commercial success in the 1970s. The band initially consisted of four musicians—Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme—who had written and recorded together for some three years, before assuming the "10cc" name in 1972. For the most part, 10cc featured two strong songwriting teams, one 'commercial' and one 'artistic', but both teams injected sharp wit into lyrically dextrous and musically varied songs. Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop-song-writers, who created most of the band's accessible songs. By way of contrast, Godley and Creme were the predominantly experimental half of 10cc, featuring an Art School sensibility and cinematic inspired writing. Every member was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and producer. Most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport and Strawberry Studios (South) in Dorking, with most of those engineered by Stewart. |
| ABBA - I DO I DO I DO I DO I DO (1975) Album: Abba (1975)
ABBA is the eponymously-titled third studio
album by the Swedish pop group
ABBA. It was originally released on 21 April 1975
through
Polar Music.
Following the Eurovision success of "Waterloo", ABBA saw the band gaining worldwide recognition. "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" topped the charts in Australia, as did "Mamma Mia" shortly after. "SOS" and "Mamma Mia" became hits in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and two of its most famous songs. The album saw ABBA dabble into reggae with "Tropical Loveland" and includes a grand pseudo-classical keyboard instrumental in the traditions of Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman with "Intermezzo No. 1" (originally entitled "Mama"). They are also known for winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, giving Sweden its first victory in the history of the contest and being the most successful group ever to take part in the contest

| THE BEATLES - ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN (1963) Album: With The Beatles (1963)
Roll Over Beethoven" is a 1956 hit single by
Chuck Berry originally released on
Chess Records, with "Drifting Heart" as the
B-side. The lyrics of the song mention
rock and roll and the desire for
rhythm and blues to replace
classical music. The song has been covered by many other
artists and
Rolling Stone ranked it #97 on their list of
the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
"Roll Over Beethoven" was a favorite of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison even before they had chosen "The Beatles" as their name, and they continued to play it live right into their American tours of 1964. Their version of "Roll Over Beethoven" was recorded on July 30, 1963 for their second British LP, With The Beatles, and features George Harrison on vocals and guitar. In the United States, it was released April 10, 1964 as the opening track of The Beatles' Second Album. and May 11, 1964 as the opening track of the second Capitol EP "Four by The Beatles". It was considered for a single release by Capitol until George Martin convinced Capitol Records to release "Can't Buy Me Love" as the new single instead |
| THE BEATLES - ACT NATURALLY (1965) Album: Help (1965)
Act Naturally" is a
song written by
Johnny Russell and Voni Morrison, originally recorded by
Buck Owens and
the Buckaroos, whose version reached number 1 on the
Billboard Country Singles chart in 1963, his
first chart-topper. In 2002, Shelly Fabian of
About.com ranked the song number 169 on her list of the
Top 500 Country Music Songs
The song has been covered by many other artists, including Loretta Lynn, Dwight Yoakam, and The Beatles
The Beatles
covered the song in 1965 on the United
Kingdom version of their album
Help!. It was released as the
B-side of "Yesterday"
in the United States. The Beatles'
version is sung by
Ringo Starr. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of
Allmusic called it "an ideal showcase for
Ringo's amiable vocals." They performed the song
during an appearance on
The Ed Sullivan Show, which was taped on
August 14, 1965 and broadcast on September 12,
1965. It was also performed at the Beatles'
famous Shea Stadium concert on August 15, 1965
and played at some concerts throughout the
Beatles' 1965 U.S. tour (alternating with
Starr's other song, "I
Wanna Be Your Man").
The Beatles recorded the song on June 17, 1965 in 13 takes. The first 12 takes were evidently used to work out the arrangement; the master was take 13, the only take with vocals. It was mixed the following day. The Beatles almost recorded a song by their engineer Norman Smith, but realized that Starr did not yet have a vocal on Help!. They originally recorded the song "If You've Got Trouble" as Starr's intended song for the album, but were dissatisfied with the results and recorded "Act Naturally" to replace it. It was the last cover they recorded until the Get Back/Let It Be sessions in 1969. Because Capitol Records' version of the Help! album included only the songs that appeared in the film Help!, plus incidental music from the film, the label held back "Yesterday" and "Act Naturally" and issued them as a non-LP single. As the B-side of the U.S. single, "Act Naturally" peaked at #47 in October 1965. The two songs made their first US album appearance on Yesterday and Today, released in the U.S. on June 20, 1966. When the single was reissued on Apple Records in 1971, "Act Naturally" had the "full apple" side and "Yesterday" ended up on the "sliced apple" side. That is because "Act Naturally" was the intended A-side and has always been listed as such in Capitol's files |
| URIAH HEEP - TEARS IN MY EYES (1971) Album: Look At Yourself (1971) Uriah Heep is my all time favorite heavy metal group and I consider them to be the last of my all time favorite bands to be discovered from 1980-1990. The lead singer of Uriah Heep since 1986 is Bernie Shaw who is from Saskatoon, SK who actually was in a band with my friend Doug Hergott. August 26th 1991 - my #5 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 20 just entering 3rd year University and performing in the band Blackberry Way whom we had just released our debut album on cassette and was getting heavy play on CFCR FM radio in Saskatoon. Uriah Heep are an English rock band formed in London in 1969 and are regarded as one of the seminal hard rock acts of the early 1970s. Uriah Heep's progressive/art rock/heavy metal fusion's distinctive features have always been massive keyboards sound, strong vocal harmonies and (in the early years) David Byron's operatic vocals. Twelve of the band's albums have made it to the UK Albums Chart (Return to Fantasy reached No. 7 in 1975) while of the fifteen Billboard 200 Uriah Heep albums Demons and Wizards was the most successful (#23, 1972). In the late 1970s the band had massive success in Germany, where the "Lady in Black" single was a big hit |
| HENRY MANCINI - THE GOLDEN GATE TWIST (1962) Album: Experiment In Terror (Soundtrack) (1962) One of my all time favorite instrumental / soundtrack albums. I knew this album for years before I actually watched the movie for the first time which is worth seeing. Enrico Nicola "Henry" Mancini (April 16, 1924 – June 14, 1994) was an American composer, conductor and arranger, best remembered for his film and television scores. He won a record number of Grammy Awards, plus a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. His best-known works include the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther film series ("The Pink Panther Theme") and the theme to the Peter Gunn television series. Mancini had a long collaboration with the film director Blake Edwards and won numerous Academy Awards for the songs in Edwards films including "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's, "Days of Wine and Roses" and for the score to Victor Victoria.
Experiment in Terror is a 1962
suspense-thriller released by
Columbia Pictures. It was directed by
Blake Edwards and written by
Mildred Gordon and
Gordon Gordon based on their 1961 novel
Operation Terror. The film stars
Glenn Ford,
Lee Remick,
Stefanie Powers and
Ross Martin.
A psychotic killer, Garland "Red" Lynch, uses a campaign of terror to force San Francisco bank teller Kelly Sherwood to steal $100,000 from the bank for him. Despite his threat to kill her or her teenaged sister Toby if she goes to the police, Sherwood contacts the San Francisco office of the FBI, where agent John Ripley takes charge of the case. |

| THE HOLLIES - IT'S A SHAME IT'S A GAME (1974) Album: The Hollies (1974) January 27th 1988 - my #3 favorite daily song for 6 days at age 17 in Grade 12. Hollies is a 1974 album by the English pop-rock band The Hollies. The centerpiece is the band's classic cover of Albert Hammond's ballad "The Air That I Breathe," a major worldwide hit that year. It also contains another "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress soundalike in "The Day That Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam McGee". The Hollies are an English pop and rock group, formed in Manchester in the early 1960s, though most of the band members are from throughout East Lancashire. Known for their distinctive vocal harmony style, they became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s and early-1970s. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries, although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966. Along with The Rolling Stones and The Searchers, they are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that have never officially broken up and that continue to record and perform. The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 |
| THE WHO - MARY ANNE WITH THE SHAKING HANDS (1967) Album: The Who Sell Out (1967) February 1987 - age 16 in Grade 11 which was my last year at Aden Bowman Collegiate. My favorite Who album which I had played many many times at this period. Psychedelic tinge to this song. Armenia City in The Sky" is a song by The Who released on their album The Who Sell Out. It was recorded and mixed at IBC Studios, London on 20 October 1967. Oddly enough, it was not written by a member of The Who, but rather by Pete Townshend's former roommate and chauffeur John Keen. Apparently, they were good friends and one day, Keen told Townshend that he had written them a song. This was the only time that The Who used a song written specifically for them by a person outside the group. A year later Keen would be part of the Townshend-created group Thunderclap Newman. This track was released as a single in Japan backed with "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand
The Who Sell Out is the third album by English
rock band
The Who, released in 1967 by
Track Records in the UK and
Decca Records in the US. It is a
concept album, formatted as a collection of unrelated
songs interspersed with
faux commercials and
public service announcements. The album purports to be a
broadcast by
pirate radio station
Radio London. Part of the
intended irony of the title was that the Who were making
commercials during that period of their career, some of
which are included as bonus tracks on the remastered CD.
The album's release was reportedly followed by lawsuits due
to the mention of real-world commercial interests in the
faux commercials and on the album covers, and by the
makers of the real
jingles (Radio London jingles), who claimed the Who used
them without permission. (The jingles were produced by
PAMS Productions of
Dallas, Texas, which created thousands of
station ID jingles in the 1960s and 1970s). It was the
deodorant company, Odorono, who took offense that
Chris Stamp made a request for endorsement dollars. In
2003, the album was ranked number 113 on
Rolling Stone magazine's list of
the 500 greatest albums of all time

| THE YARDBIRDS - JEFF'S BOOGIE (1966)
Album: Roger The Engineer (1966)
Roger the Engineer (original UK title:
Yardbirds, US, German, and French title: Over
Under Sideways Down) is an album by the
English
blues rock band
The Yardbirds, released in 1966. It was produced by
bassist
Paul Samwell-Smith and
Simon Napier-Bell. It was the only Yardbirds album with
all original material. Although the record was officially
titled Yardbirds (and still is in authoritative chart
sources, such as The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums),
it has since been referred to, first colloquially, then
semi-officially, as Roger the Engineer, a title
stemming from the cover drawing of the record's audio
engineer Roger Cameron by band member
Chris Dreja. Due to the influence of
Jeff Beck's experimentation with guitar
distortion, the album is considered a precursor to
heavy metal.
The Yardbirds are an English rock band that had a string of hits in the mid 1960s, including "For Your Love", "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Heart Full of Soul". The group is notable for having started the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, all of whom were in the top five of Rolling Stone's 100 Top Guitarists list (Clapton as No. 2, Page as No. 3, and Beck at No. 5). A blues-based band that broadened its range into pop and rock, the Yardbirds had a hand in many electric guitar innovations of the mid-1960s, such as feedback, "fuzztone" distortion and improved amplification. Pat Pemberton, writing for Spinner, holds that the Yardbirds were "the most impressive guitar band in rock music". After the Yardbirds broke up in 1968, their lead guitarist Jimmy Page founded what became Led Zeppelin |

| ZAGER AND EVANS - LITTLE KIDS (1969) I discovered Zager and Evans through their major #1 song In The Year 2525. They were one-hit wonders but I had an album by them which did not include that song. So it turned out to be their 2nd album but wow I just loved it enough that I have boosted the album up my charts at least 3 different years. This was the 4th of 4 #1 hits Zager And Evans have had on my daily #1 chart. May 28th 1989 - my #7 favorite daily song for 1 day at age 18 the year after graduating high school.
Zager & Evans was a
Lincoln, Nebraska,
rock-pop
duo of the late 1960s and early 1970s named after its
two members,
Denny Zager and
Rick Evans. "In the Year 2525", with lyrics by
Evans and music by Zager, warned of the dangers of
technology, portraying a future in which the
human race was destroyed by its own technological and
medical innovations. The last stanza of the song suggests
mankind undergoes a continuing cycle of
birth,
death and
rebirth.
"In the Year 2525" hit number one on the Hot 100 in 1969. It claimed the #1 spot for six weeks. It also topped the charts in the UK. It was number one on July 20, 1969, in the United States, the date of the first manned moon landing, by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. It continued to top the charts while the Woodstock Festival was going on, forever cementing "2525" in the minds of a generation. It was nominated for a special Hugo Award that same year. It sold over four million copies by 1970 and was awarded a gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in July 1969. RCA thought they were onto the "The Next Big Thing", but follow-up singles, such as "Mr. Turnkey" (a song about a rapist who nails his own wrist to the jail wall as punishment for his crime) went largely unnoticed by the public. "In the Year 2525" was their only Hot 100 entry. |
